The Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, also known as the Mysteries of Light, were introduced by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002 through his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. They are intended to focus on key events in the public life of Jesus, which reveal Him as the “light of the world.” These mysteries are typically prayed on Thursdays. There are five Luminous Mysteries, and they are as follows:
1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan
This mystery recalls Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. During the baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven declared, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
2. The Wedding at Cana
This mystery reflects on Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding feast in Cana, where He turned water into wine at the request of His mother, Mary (John 2:1-12). This event marks the beginning of His public ministry and the manifestation of His divine power.
3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
This mystery focuses on Jesus’ public preaching, where He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, called for repentance, and revealed God’s love through His teachings and miracles (Mark 1:15). It also includes His forgiveness of sins and the invitation to enter into a relationship with God.
4. The Transfiguration
In this mystery, Jesus is transfigured on Mount Tabor in the presence of Peter, James, and John. His face shines like the sun, and His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear alongside Him, and a voice from heaven says, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:1-8).
5. The Institution of the Eucharist
This mystery commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist, giving His disciples His Body and Blood under the appearance of bread and wine (Matthew 26:26-28). It is the ultimate gift of His love and the foundation of the sacrament of the Eucharist in the Church.
These mysteries invite contemplation on the key moments of Christ’s life that reveal His mission to bring salvation and the light of God’s truth into the world.
