In Japanese folklore and fairy tales, an oni is a kind of demon, org, ogre or troll. They are sometimes fun little weirdos, but often terrible blood-thirsty body-butchers and cannibals. Sometimes they are huge and have big horns. They are different bright colors, sometimes red, blue, or yellow and they often wear loincloths made of tiger skins. They have magical powers. But most of the time they’ll just bop you on the head with their big fat clubs.

This week we are reading “The Goblin of Adachigahara” from Japanese Fairy Tales edited by Yei Theodora Ozaki

Keep an eye on the “The Goblin of Adachigahara.” This Goblin might remind you of Baba-Yaga, from our Russian fairy tale in episode 25. Some of the Japanese ghosts and demons called tengu also have very long noses, very similar to Baba-Yaga whose nose is sometimes as long as an arm.

The name of the Lord, ‘Bag of Rice,’ in Japanese, Tawara is a pun because of the same pronunciation of the proper name Tawara and the word ‘rice-bag,’ tawara. Tawara is the nickname given to the great military hero, Fujiwara no Hidesato. This story, “My Lord Bag of Rice,” turns some of what Fujiwara no Hidesato accomplished as a military hero into an epic fantasy story.

When Kipling began writing fiction, he wrote furiously. In 1888, when he was twenty-three years old, he published six collections of short stories, containing 41 stories. At twenty-six years old, Kipling married and went on honeymoon with his wife to America where they lived in a small cottage together and had their first baby. It was here, at this cottage, that Kipling began the novel, The Jungle Book, which nearly one-hundred years later was made into an animated movie by the Disney Company. This was the last movie Walt Disney was able to work on before he passed away in 1966.

Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, India. Kipling and his sister grew up with their Indian babysitter, learning Indian songs and fairy tales. Everything changed when they were moved back to England to attend a boarding school. This boarding school was absolutely horrible. Kipling described as a place of cruelty and neglect. When he was sixteen years old, Kipling was finally able to return to India and became an assistant editor for a local newspaper. While writing for the newspaper, back in India where he’d longed to be for a decade, Kipling became inspired to begin writing his fiction.

  • EP1.《原來是這樣!故事系列- 大鯨魚的小喉嚨》”How The Whale Got His Throat” From Just So Stories!

The Just So Stories are origin stories about how animals got their claws or humps or teeth or spots. Kipling wrote these stories for his daughter Josephine and called them “Just So Stories” because he had to read them to her “just so,” that is, just as Jospehine was used to, or she would complain.
