December 31st 1899 in a charmingly furnished drawing room in an elegant house in London. It’s New Years Eve and we are about to enter a new century. The master of the house is about to leave for the war in South Africa. The usual British stiff upper lip attitude prevails as the clock chimes midnight and the new century begins but the joy of the moment soon dims and is replaced by sadness as the master goes off to war and the bands play “soldiers of the Queen”.
