Hello!  Well we thought we had gone through all the colors we were going to discuss but as has often happens in science, we found something new and interesting and we just had to share!  So after going through the entire rainbow and black and white, what is left?  Well the colors brown and pink and while these might not leap to the mind when thinking about paintings, or colors you love, they are fascinating!

1:30: Dr Lex walks us through pink.  We will learn what makes pink, how it got its name and why the sky turns pink at sunset. There's also an amazing scientific discovery (no spoilers!) and some great artist tea to spill about this brilliant color.

10:13 Dr. Dimos takes us through the world of brown pigments and there is so much to learn.  While brown seems simple and perhaps dull, it is truly an amazing pigment with a rich history and the ability to produce hauntingly beautiful art.  Dr. Dimos delves into earthen brown tones, some with dubious ethics around them and some amazing paintings techniques.

Hello! This week's episode is about the quintessential Christmas colors: red and green.  Now we know that it's past the holiday season (even by the most generous definition) but we still wanted to share this episode since it features some exciting science and interesting tidbits.

Dr Dimos walks us through red dyes, including more toxic pigments.  He also discusses how a little beetle got to be one of the most popular red dyes in history we come back around to electric vehicle batteries again too!

Dr. Lex takes on green discussing one of the most toxic pigments and how arsenic reeks havoc on the body.  We end with how Disney makes things disappear through paint and of course provide some fun cocktail party facts.

Hello!  This week's episode is about two bright and sunny colors, yellow and orang

Dr. Dimos walks us through numerous ways to make yellow, most of which are toxic. He talks about all the toxic ways you can make yellow pigment, and few relatively safe ones, including feeding mango leaves to cows (though that's not recommended).

Dr. Lex tackles orange pigments, which are unsurprisingly similar to yellow pigments.  She discusses more toxic paints and even goes on a tangent about flow cytometry.

Hello!  This week's episode is about some colors that were highly symbolic in the Roman Empire (and elsewhere), we're taking a splash around the science behind white and purple pigments.  

Dr. Dimos is blinded by the white but not so much that he can't provide some cool fun facts about white pigment.  Find out about why Romans wore white togas when running for office and the very messy way lead white paint used to be made. 

Dr. Lex has a royally good time talking all about purple dyes and trying to explain about methyl groups. Find out how a scientists looking for synthetic quinine discovered a popular purple dye and how a dog discovered that snails may be good for making pigments.

Hello!  We're back on track with our visual arts series. This time we go from how we see color to how color, specifically pigments, are manufactured. The science behind paint is a fascinating one indeed.

Hello Again - Welcome back to LuxeSci, the podcast to re-ignite your wonder by exploring the science behind luxury items.

We've taken a bit of a detour away from our regularly (or not-so-regularly) scheduled programming because it's our anniversary!  Not our wedding anniversary but our podcast anniversary.  One year ago (approximately) we launched this podcast.  It started with Dr. Lex as the host and Dr. Dimos as the audio engineer.  The podcast was a way to bring some creativity back into our lives and for us to share our natural curiosity and love of science with all of you.  We also hope that the podcast has made learning about science a little more fun and re-ignited a sense of wonder in our listeners since it's a crazy, wild and wonderful world out there.

Since it's our first anniversary, we decided to talk about the science behind the traditional and modern first anniversary presents.  Tune in to learn how to make paper and find out what a coordination polyhedron is.

For our last installment of the fine jewelry series, we're turning our curiosity and sense of humor on to a bit of an oddball in the gemstone world, Amber.  Dr. Dimos does a deep dive into what amber is made of, it's long and storied history and some of its chemical properties. Dr. Lex has two amber-related stories about drug development and a little water bear that got trapped for eternity.  As always, there are glossary terms, fun cocktail facts and plenty of fun science.
