  • #99: Melina Coogan - becoming your own health advocate when you have chronic Lyme Disease
Melina Coogan grew up in Vermont and was an active outdoorswoman. She had strange symptoms for several years, such a tingling all over her body, and shooting pains. About a year ago her symptoms became much more severe, with a spotted rash that grew from her feet to her face in the course of a day, and a urinary tract disorder that left her unable to move. Online research lead her to discover Lyme Disease, and when she went to the doctors for a test she tested positive.
In this episode you will learn three things:
    1) A reminder of why it’s important to be your own advocate
    2) the role a community support has on dealing with chronic disease
    3) Melina’s hack for alleviating her lyme symptoms
Today she is receiving treatment from a lyme literate doctor as well as using other alternative therapies, and documents her experience with Lyme Disease on her blog The Wilder Coast.

  • #98: Bob Miller, N.D. - Nutrigenetic patterns of people with chronic Lyme Disease
In 2015 Bob Miller was inspired to start examining chronic lyme disease, and he founded NutriGenetic Research Institute to research and publish reports on the relationship between genetic variants, labs and presenting symptoms.
Bob has served as a traditional naturopath for 20 years, and earned his naturopathic degree from Trinity School of Natural Health. Recognizing that there was not a nutritional supplement line on the market comprehensive enough to address all of the possible genetic variants, he began working with a national company, Professional Health Products, to formulate an Epigenetics line of products.
In this episode you will learn:
1\ Why you can have high iron and still be anemic
2 Why just supplementing methylated folate, even if you have the homozygous MTHFR gene, is probably a bad idea.
3 The excess nutrient that many Lymies have that makes them stay up way too late researching lyme
What Bob is doing reminded of Chinese Medicine, both acupuncture and herbal medicine. It’s not simply enough to know what a vitamin or supplement does, or even if you have specific genetic variants. You have to know what’s happening RIGHT NOW in your body. You need the right intervention at the right time, or stated another way, you never wade into the same river twice.

  • #97: Dr. Terry Wahls - Using the Wahl's Protocol for Lyme disease
Dr. Terry Wahls was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis in 2000. By 2003 it had transitioned to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. Investigation into nutritional brain health slowed her decline, but it wasn’t until she discovered functional medicine and radically changed her diet to incorporate the nutrition she needed that she began to improve.
Today Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa and a staff physician at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Hospital, where she bikes to work every day.

In 2009 Karen came down with a case of Bells Palsy, after months of ineffective treatment and trips to specialists, a suggestion that her symptoms might be due to an underlying autoimmune disorder, which inspired her to do more research and the discovery of Lyme and Lyme symptoms in July 2010.
