Did you know, the breath is more than just your object of meditation. It is your home.
To meditate there must be an object of meditation. That is, meditation is always meditation on something. At Mindful15, most lessons teach you to focus on your breath as the object of your meditation.
Breath meditation has been around for thousands of years for good reason. The breath provides a metaphor for life, because like your life it constantly changes. Learning to attend to the ever-changing breath teaches you how to flow with the ever-changing conditions of daily life.
The breath is also always with you. Wherever you go, whatever you’re doing, however you’re feeling, the breath is always there with you. That means your meditation practice is always accessible.
If you practice regularly, the breath will become a safe place for you, a home base. When you are anxious, stressed, fearful, sad… there is always a safe place you can go at a moment’s notice. You can go home to your breath.
The more you practice meditating on the breath, the safer the breath becomes. It is always available as a refuge, a safe and comfortable place, a place where you can take care of yourself.
Each new breath is also a new beginning, a chance to start anew. It’s a chance to leave behind unhelpful responses and do something different, something supportive and helpful for yourself.
So, whenever you feel less than good, try coming home to the breath.
