Muscle Man is a very funny book about a college professor who’s distracted all day because he’s really hungry and imagining himself on a manosphere podcast who then goes to the gym and does a woke denunciation. Derek Guy aka @dieworkwear is a guy named Derek who really likes to wear clothes good and also likes to dunk on guys who do not wear clothes good on X, The Everything App. A lot of the time those guys are in the Trump Administration and once Derek makes fun of the way they dress they stop being bad (haha jk). This episode is more about menswear as a phenomenon but we decided to frame it around Derek because he represents a specific strain of thinking in mens’ fashion, but more importantly he likes to pop off online so maybe he’ll get mad at us and give us clout. Other topics discussed include the Cone Mills Decepticon, the ultimate collab (smoking weed x playing videogames), and how wearing clothes is and is not like posting.

Eminem made two really good CD’s and accidentally remade Bicycle Thieves in the form of 8 Mile, then got addicted to drugs went to rehab and reinvented himself as the technically goodest rapper alive. For this, the world has deemed him a cultural force on par with at least Elvis or somebody and now there’s a documentary about his fans called Stans which is the thing this episode is technically about. But mainly we’re just talking about how good Eminem used to be and how much he definitely has not gone to therapy. This episode is not Eminem hagiography but does find us making fun of Eminem hagiography.

There are way too many dudes named Brian and/or Bryan Johnson (AC/DC guy, Liver King guy etc.) but the one we’re talking about today is the Bryan Johnson who tweets all day about the crazy science experiments he does on himself in the hopes of becoming immortal. We brought on our friend, the musician and technologist Mat Dryhurst, to talk about Johnson and his schtick. In the episode, Mat admits that he’s “kind of a transhumanist,” then we talk about how everyone becomes a parody of themselves to get attention these days, consider whether it’s better to be trapped in an infinite life glitch that’s very boring or live a rich but normal-length life, plus some other stuff. Sadly Yannick’s audio cut off as he was talking about how sick it would be to get reincarnated as an octopus but the episode’s still good.

A funny thing about Shure podcast microphones is that if you are talking into one, you automatically become an expert on whatever thing you happen to be talking about. This is important because it helps explain why we decided to talk very confidently about pro wrestling in this episode even though none of us are big pro wrestling fans. We are, however, generally familiar with Hulk Hogan, because he was one of the most famous Americans of the past 50 years, and he also got Peter Thiel’s help to sue Yannick’s old workplace so hard that it had to shut down. We talk about Hulk Hogan as a media figure, perpetual frontman for the machinations of extremely powerful men, and try to determine, once and for all, if pro wrestling is fake.

Long story short: Drew reviewed a 300-song Metallica reissue for Pitchfork and got so into it that he watched Some Kind of Monster then made Yannick and Yuri watch it too, and then demanded we all do an episode about Metallica. Turns Yuri thinks Lars Ulrich is the worst drummer in the world, and Yannick thinks Metallica is for dads. Neither of these opinions are necessarily untrue, but this did lead Drew to do a lot of defending of Metallica throughout this episode. Anyway, this episode is about what it is like when you co-own a small business that makes millions of dollars a year but hate the people you co-own that small business with, especially if that small business is Metallica.

I honestly don’t know how we made it to Episode 10 before we thought to do something on the Liver King. We talk about what makes a hypermasculine internet psycho benign or problematic, debate whether the Liver King is allowed to justify secretly using $11,000 worth of steroids per month for self-care reasons, and debate whether the “Liver King” character was steroid-free even if Brian Johnson was juicing like hell. Ultimately, this is an episode about what it means to be a man, and if you can still be one if you regularly wear a shirt.

Maybe it’s just me but it really cheeses me out when people pronounce the word “ketamine” without the E on the end like it rhymes with the word “vitamin.” No it doesn’t. It’s drugs.
