  • Body Piercing With Jim Ward In Madame Perry's Salon
Running the Gauntlet-An Intimate History of the Modern Body Piercing Industry tells the story of how the author fathered the modern body piercing industry and in so doing gave birth to the larger body piercing movement. Jim Ward, with backing from Doug Malloy, started Gauntlet back in 1975 in Los Angeles. At the time, it was the first body piercing studio not only in the U.S., but in the world. With Gauntlet, Jim went from a small, one-man jewelry manufacturer out of the back of a small retail space to a significant industry wholesaler. (My first jewelry and supplies were purchased from Gauntlet, in 1989.) Gauntlet’s retail operations expanded from one shop in Los Angeles to studios in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and a even a franchise in Paris. In 1977, with the input of Doug and Fakir Musafar, Jim started Piercing Fans International Quarterly (PFIQ), the first (and highly influential) publication dedicated to body piercing. Jim is also personally responsible for developing many of the tools, techniques, and jewelry designs that are still in use today.

  • Hillbilly Hellraisers Author Blake Perkins Visits Mme Perry's Salon
Hillbilly Hellraisers Author Blake Perkins Visits Mme Perry's Salon . Blake Perkins searches for the roots of rural defiance in the Ozarks--and discovers how it changed over time. Eschewing generalities, Perkins focuses on the experiences and attitudes of rural people themselves as they interacted with government from the late nineteenth century through the twentieth century. He uncovers the reasons local disputes and uneven access to government power fostered markedly different reactions by hill people as time went by. Resistance in the earlier period sprang from upland small farmers' conflicts with capitalist elites who held the local levers of federal power. But as industry and agribusiness displaced family farms after World War II, a conservative cohort of town business elites, local political officials, and midwestern immigrants arose from the region's new low-wage, union-averse economy. As Perkins argues, this modern antigovernment conservatism bore little resemblance to the backcountry populism of an earlier age but had much in common with the movement elsewhere.

  • Gun Violence In American Schools - Is There A Solution? Madame Perry's Salon
Gun Violence In American Schools - Is There A Solution? The heartbreaking and senseless slaughter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14 took seventeen lives, sent fourteen people to the hospital, and ignited a vocal, informed high school students to take on a job in which they felt adults had failed them. That is, making the legislators and all members of the United States government take responsibility for student safety, and to value the lives of students and teachers more highly than the hefty sponsorships and campaign contributions of the National Rifle Association.
