The 5th commandment orients us toward our very close neighbors—our parents! We recognize that in God’s orderly world, there are different levels of authority and leadership, including parents. It is God’s good design for us to honor those in authority over us because, as Q&A 104 says, “…by their hand God wills to rule us.”

The main "character" in both Psalm 1 and Psalm 2 is Jesus Christ—the blessed man and the Anointed Son. Here in Psalm 1, the blessing offered to God's people is growth in spiritual wisdom, which the Holy Spirit pours out lavishly on all who take refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ. In this message, we learn that Jesus never walked in the counsel of the wicked, that he meditated on God's law, and that he saves from the judgment.

Every age has different assumptions about work and rest, but these are not new issues. The pattern of work and rest is in the earliest chapters of the Bible. Immediately after the fall, work becomes toil—which is when work becomes filled with frustrations, and success is always mixed with failure. Into this situation comes the 4th commandment concerning the Sabbath. In this message, we look at the meaning of the commandment, and the blessings that come to those who obey it.

Jesus said, "Everything written about me in the Psalms must be fulfilled." What was written about him in the Psalms? His death, resurrection, ascension, and all his work for his people. And since Christ is the King at the center of the Psalms, we exercise our spiritual union with him in a particularly wonderful way when we read, pray, and sing the Psalms through him.

The 3rd commandment also includes the reverent use of vows. A vow or oath is when we use God’s name in order to confirm the truth.  In this message, we focus on the principle of carefulness as our guide to taking vows, first by asking the question, Are vows legitimate?, then by seeing biblical examples of bot legitimate and illegitimate oaths.

In, 1 Chronicles 16, David  puts in place loud choirs, musicians, and psalms. And it leads us to ask, more broadly, What are the Psalms for? They are for pointing us back up to the ascended King, Jesus Christ. When our hearts fail again to remember that he is the King of kings, the Psalms powerfully remind us v. 31, “The LORD reigns!”

The 3rd commandment: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” In this sermon, we focus  on (1) the meaning of the commandment; (2) the reason for the commandment; (3) the application of the commandment.

Selections from 2 Sam. 14–18: The story begins with Absalom—whose name means “father of peace”—waging a war against his own father to take the throne by force. It ends with Absalom pierced and hanging from a tree, and his father David wishing he could have died in his place. In other words, what we see in this OT story is a shadow of the king who was still to come, Jesus Christ. And what we learn as believers is that our conflicts must be brought back to the cross in order for us to handle them in godliness and humility.

Negatively, the 2nd commandment says you shall not make carved images. But stated positively, the core of the command is to worship God by his Word. We must be convinced that God himself tells us how to serve and worship him. He does this through his Word, not through our experiences. And the reason why he does it in order to keep us liberated from the enslaving power of idolatry.

One of the main events that led to the writing of many Psalms was God's covenant with David.  As we dive into the Psalms to learn how and why we sing and pray them, we begin by looking at the Davidic Covenant, learning that in this covenant, God's people are blessed with divine security through Jesus Christ.
