Publisher's Summary:
The Lygons were the inspiration and model for the doomed Marchmain family in Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited: Waugh was a regular visitor in the 1930s, one in a long line of writers, composers, painters, royals, and rebels who passed through Madresfield's doors.
Now, Jane Mulvagh has been given access to this very special house, still lived in by the 28th generation of Lygons. Drawing on a unique and virtually unknown archive that dates back to the Conquest, she illuminates a rich and dramatic history.
Critic Reviews:
"High-class." (Independent)
"Her animating touch resuscitates the past and reclads a troop of haughty ghosts in fallible flesh." (Guardian)
"Mulvagh is a tactful tour-guide with a convincing appreciation of the periods and materials that have enriched the place." (Telegraph)

This account of the house behind the story and TV ...
This account of the house behind the story and TV drama of Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" follows the famous country manor house and occupants through a turbulent and fascinating history. Through anecdotal events and furnishings as artifacts, the place becomes a microcosm of English class culture before the wars, and its real life characters become as interesting and perhaps more believable than the resulting fiction and its actors.
Great Book!
This book is wonderful for anyone that is interested in Madresfield Court and with the Lygon family. The pictures were beautiful. If you have an interest in The Lygon Family or enjoy the story of Brideshead Revisited, I recommend this book.
Interesting Book!
Very interesting book if you are a fan of Evelyn Waugh and "Brideshead Revisited".
Interesting detailed account of the Earls Beauchamp
This book for me had just the right amount of detail and interest to read on to the end. I have always been interested in the Brideshead Revisited generation and bought the book primarily for the ending chapters about the last two Earls, but their ancient history was interesting to read.
Five Stars
fascinating - gives a real sense of human history
