I see a lot of people thinking that starting a Substack is somehow the secret to finding new clients and making good money in your online business, but y’all should know by now that it’s never that easy. Yes, there are people making good money with that platform, but they typically already have an audience they’ve built some other way—not to mention the fact that they don’t own their shit, Substack does! If you want to monetize your emails and blogs, you absolutely can (and should!), but there are far better ways to do it.

There’s this idea out there that a good subject line is the difference between getting your email opened and getting your email deleted, but is that true? I could have titled this episode something like, “How to write better email subject lines” but that would be making the assumption that subject lines are all that important, and I just don’t think they are. When someone opens an email, it’s because they care about the person or business sending the email—they care about YOU. And while there are some tactics you can use to increase your open rates, the most important by far is building trust with your audience.

We’ve got big changes to make in this world, but to actually make change does not include getting our mobs together and pitchforks out for anyone who dares to be imperfect. Everyone is on their own timeline when it comes to opening their eyes to the shit going on around us. Hating on or judging someone for not being as aware and educated as you are, or shaming someone for making “too small” of an impact gets us nowhere. We’ve been so heavily trained to outsource almost every little thing in our lives, and now we’re being asked to think about it, defend it, and understand it in a way we never did before and it’s exhausting. Convenience has its consequences, and we’re facing them now. But just because something is exhausting or uncomfortable or inconvenient, doesn’t mean we should run away from it. We’ve got to lean in to the discomfort and inconvenience, get curious about it, and then we can start making change—every little step matters.
