Gifts are often used to build relationships in business, whether with clients, customers, or employees. But what if we have been doing gifting all wrong? In today's episode of Magic in the Room, Chris and guest John Ruhlin discuss a new way to think about gifting. The bottom line is that gifts can be used to build long-lasting relationships, but not if you just put the company logo on a mug and send it to everyone. Instead, you should intentionally make every gift focused on the receiver and create a lasting memory they will associate with you.
John is the founder of GIFT·OLOGY and the author of Giftology: The Art and Science of Using Gifts to Cut Through the Noise, Increase Referrals, and Strengthen Client Retention.

Today, we continue our series on the skills needed to lead a team. We started with building trust in episode 178. In this Magic in the Room episode, Hannah, Chris, and Luke discuss a new skill: creating an environment of commitment and accountability. The core idea in this conversation is that people can only be accountable if they know what they are committed to. People can hold themselves accountable once we have a common understanding of commitments.

In today's episode of Magic in the Room, we continue our series on leading a team with the foundational skill leaders must have: the ability to build trust. It may sound cliche, but trust is the foundation of a high-performing team. In fact, Luke and Hannah argue that dogs have better lives and fewer people die when teams have high trust! When teams don't have trust, the result is lower performance, lower well-being, and ultimately, people leave. If you focus on one thing as a leader, it should be building trust.

Welcome to Season 5 of Magic in the Room! In this episode, Hannah, Chris, and Luke introduce the topic we will focus on this year: Lead a Team.
Everyone's leadership journey starts with leading themselves, which was the topic of Season 4 of Magic in the Room. The next step on the journey may be having formal leadership over a team of people. As you make this leadership shift, you must change your definition of success from focusing on individual accomplishments to equipping your team to be effective. The transition is not easy! In this episode, we discuss what that transition is, how to make it, and the practical skills you need to develop to be an effective team leader.

The rise of nihilism, the rejection of all moral principles, or the belief that life is meaningless can be challenging to discuss. However, if we are going to be Intentional Leaders, we must be willing to notice changes in the world around us. The good news is that once we see nihilism, we can use the principles of hope to bring about change in ourselves and our organizations.

Today, we continue our series on hope by replaying one of our favorite episodes, which lays the foundation for much of our thinking. Hope may seem intangible, but leaders can intentionally nurture hope in the people around them. In this episode, Chris, Hannah, and special guest Dr. Chan Hellman discuss the three elements of hope: Goals, Pathways, and Willpower. Leaders can develop hope by ensuring these three elements are present. Chan M. Hellman is a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma and Director of The Hope Research Center. He has written over 100 scientific publications and presented at numerous national and international conferences worldwide. Chan's research is focused on hope as a psychological strength, helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity. Chan's book "Hope Rising: How the Science of Hope Can Change Your Life" with his co-author Casey Gwinn is published by Morgan James.

Today, we start the final series in our season on Intentional Leadership by diving into the topic of hope. Hope is not just wishful thinking; instead, hope is the belief that the future will be better and you have the power to make it so. This requires three things to be true: you must have goals, pathways, and agency. The good news is that you can develop hope for yourself and your team by intentionally building in those three areas.
