<3 Margaret Osborn (born 23 August 1988), known professionally as Alice Glass, is a Canadian singer and songwriter.  Alice Glass is the debut extended play (EP) by Alice Glass and was released on August 18, 2017 through Loma Vista Recordings. The EP marks Glass’ first collection of solo material since her departure from electronic band Crystal Castles in 2014 in which she was the front woman. Her new stuff is a lot different to the glitchy electro punk sounds of Crystal Castles but non the less its a welcomed change and one that i certainly hope you enjoy <3

<3  This week on magic Portals, we hear from the legendary rock and roll singer Patti Smith. Patricia Lee Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and artist who became an influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album “Horses”. Patti Smith was signed by Clive Davis of Arista Records, and in 1975 recorded their first album, Horses, produced by John Cale. The album is a pure reflection of rock and roll incorporating spoken poetry. The album begins with a cover of Van Morrison’s iconic “Gloria” , and Smith’s opening words: “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine” (an excerpt from “Oath”, one of her early poems). The album cover photograph by Robert Mapplethorpe has become one of rock’s classic images.

<3 Lorde, byname of Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born November 7, 1996, Takapuna, New Zealand), New Zealand singer-songwriter who was known for lyrics that exhibited a mature, jaded worldview.

Lorde was raised in the suburbs of Auckland and demonstrated a knack for public performance at an early age. At age 12 she was signed to a development contract with the Universal Music Group after an agent received footage of her singing at a middle-school talent show. A lifelong fascination with royalty and aristocracy inspired her stage name, although she appended an e to the end, as she felt that “Lord” was too masculine.

This week we will be featuring her latest album Melodrama. Powered by the lead single “Green Light,” Lorde’s sophomore album, Melodrama (2017), was greeted with an overwhelmingly positive critical reception. Melodrama’s 11 songs explored themes of youth and womanhood with a sound that drew on influences ranging from modern electronic dance music to retro Europop to the soaring vocals of early Kate Bush. <3

<3 This week on Magic Portals we hear from Slint and their album Spiderland.  Slint is an American rock band consisting of Brian McMahan (guitar and vocals), David Pajo (guitar), Britt Walford (drums and vocals), Todd Brashear (bass on Spiderland), and Ethan Buckler (bass on Tweez). They formed in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, in 1986. Slint’s first album Tweez was recorded by legendary engineer Steve Albini in 1987 and released in obscurity on the Jennifer Hartman Records label in 1989. It was followed two years later by the critically acclaimed Spiderland, released on the independent label Touch and Go Records. <3

<3 Hole was an American alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1989 by singer and guitarist Courtney Love and lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. The band had a revolving line-up of bassists and drummers, their most prolific being drummer Patty Schemel, and bassists Kristen Pfaff (d. 1994) and Melissa Auf der Maur.

Influenced by Los Angeles’ punk rock scene, the band garnered critical acclaim for their frenetic debut album, Pretty on the Inside(1991), produced by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. The album features distorted and alternating guitar compositions, screaming vocals,  a style which the band would later distance themselves from, opting for a less abrasive sound on their subsequent releases. Love’s lyrics on the album are often narrative, graphic, and abstract, detailing issues of violence, self-realisation, and womanhood. The record was dedicated to Rob Ritter of the Los Angeles punk rock acts Bags and The Gun Club. <3

Garbage is an American alternative rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1993. The group consists of American musicians Duke Erikson (bass, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Steve Marker (lead guitar), and Butch Vig (drums) and Scottish musician Shirley Manson (vocals). All four members are involved in songwriting and production.

The second half of the show will focus on a soundtrack from the iconic 90s film Jawbreaker, released in 1999. Jawbreaker is an American black comedy film written and directed by Darren Stein. The film stars Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart, Julie Benz, and Judy Greer as girls in an exclusive clique in their high school. Charlotte Ayanna has a non-speaking cameo role as a murdered prom queen. <3 This week on Magic Portals we explore Wipers debut album Is This Real? Wipers were a punk rock group formed in Portland, Oregon in 1977 by guitarist Greg Sage, along with drummer Sam Henry and bassist Dave Koupal. The group’s tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. The band is considered the first Pacific Northwest punk band. The Wipers first album, Is This Real?, was issued in January 1980 on Park Avenue Records, a label that the band hoped would gain them wider distribution. It was originally recorded on a 4-track in the band’s rehearsal studio, but the label insisted that the band use a professional studio. Once released, the album gained a cult following, although the band was best known for their live shows around the Portland area.
