It is amazing how many products — cleaning products, healthcare products, candles, and more — that seem healthy or at least non-toxic (often because the labels and marketing say they are) but turn out to be incredibly toxic. We tend to trust in the process of a product coming to market and assume that they must be safe if they’re on a shelf for us to purchase, but it’s not true. Luckily, we have non-toxic lifestyle experts like Sophia Ruan Gushée around to teach us what we need to know to keep ourselves, our family, and our future generations safe. Get ready to take back control and confidence as a consumer!
Sophia has also sent us her top 5 tips for dealing with the coronavirus quarantine:
1. Wash your hands often. Chemicals and heavy metals are swept up on our fingertips from what we touch. Washing your hands often — but especially before you eat — is effective in reducing your toxic exposures. With COVID-19, it's important to wash your hands more often to minimize the spread of the virus from your hands to your face, eyes, nose, and mouth. Sophia recommends handwashing with non-toxic soaps.
2. Moisturize with a non-toxic moisturizer. Since we will be washing our hands more often than ever, our hands will be drier. Detox your hand moisturizer by using an emollient that's safe enough to eat. Options that are easy to find in your kitchen include olive oil, sesame oil, or coconut oil.
3. Disinfect. You can use hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol if you have some or can manage to buy some. Steam cleaners are a great option for the floor and sink fixtures.
4. Open your windows regularly. The coronavirus can accumulate in your indoor air, so allowing fresh airflow can help dilute the coronavirus from your home. Opening your windows provides an escape route for these toxic exposures!
5. Manage your stress. Your stress, anxiety, moods, and thoughts affect your immune response. So experiment with which habits will reduce your stress and anxiety, and improve your moods, mindset, and perspective. This is an excellent time to identify your positive, healing triggers. I have a beautiful podcast that explains the simple approaches to help you identify yours. You can listen to it here: Essential Features of a Healing Home.

Dr. Will Cole is a functional medicine doctor and an absolutely incredible teacher. Our bodies all develop a lot of extra inflammation when we experience stress and fear, and Dr. Cole has so much information on how to help with that. We dive into the differences between conventional and functional medicine and how people can take care of their bodies, plus Dr. Cole has some great tips on how to optimize your health during self-quarantine:
1. Take a nap: Give your mind a rest by taking a quick nap. Research shows that a 15-minute nap can reduce stress.
2. Keep moving: Even though you are stuck inside, it's important to keep moving. Similar to meditation, exercise has been shown to improve anxiety and depression. Try a 10-minute at-home HIIT workout, jogging up and down stairs, or even a virtual barre or pilates class.
3. Put your phone down: Quarantine gives us plenty of opportunity to spend hours aimlessly scrolling on our phones. But constantly reading about the state of the world and playing the mental comparison game on social media can place a huge weight on your shoulders which ultimately increases stress hormones like cortisol. Practice putting your phone away for at least an hour a day minimum and replace it with movement, journaling, or reading a book.

With great joy I welcome my dear friend and brother, Lucas Krump! I’m excited to share our conversation around creating space for men to connect with their emotions, practice vulnerability, and build community. You’ll hear how Lucas’ story of disconnecting from his heart and doing what he believed as a man he “should” be doing led him to feel empty inside. From that low place, he did his own emotional work and is now the CEO and co-founder of EVRYMAN, an organization that creates community for men to do the same.
***Our meditation begins at [35:32]!
------------------
Lucas is passionate about connection, community and emotional wellness. As CEO and Co-Founder of EVRYMAN, Lucas together with EVRYMAN co-founders Dan Doty, Owen Marcus and Sascha Lewis lead a global movement that brings men together to develop their emotional skillset, enabling deeper connections with themselves and others. Since launching in 2017, EVRYMAN has supported thousands of men to lead happier, healthier more connected lives via retreats, weekly groups and online programs. EVRYMAN has been featured in the New York Times, Men's Health, The Today Show and The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.
He is an adventurer and a traveler. Lucas grew up in Kansas, after college he spent 10 years living in Africa and Asia before moving to New York City and now Hudson, New York. where he calls home. His passion for service and commitment to purpose are rooted in his Jesuit education and midwest values. He believes deeply in human connection and its ability to heal wounds and open hearts to the endless possibilities of the human experience.
