Katy is a devotee of truth and love. Katy has studied and worked with many modalities in the healing arts but it is iRest®, a meditative practice drawn from the ancient teachings of Kashmiri Shaivism, that has woven itself into every corner of her life. She started practicing in 2005 and has been a trained and certified teacher since 2010. In 2015, Katy started spending long periods of each year in ashrams and monasteries to integrate these sacred and supportive teachings more deeply.

Wherever she goes, Katy loves spending time outside in the natural world. Outside sessions, you can find her studying Sanskrit chanting, swimming in the ocean, resting barefoot on mountain rocks, and taking long walks with loved ones.

In this episode, designer, business owner, mother, and beauty creator Tray Schlarb offer us her wisdom for navigating life’s difficult initiations. We cover divorce, single mothering, soul callings, and ritual, to name a few.

Hailing from a simple idyllic childhood by the ocean and amongst the sugar cane in South Africa, Tray studied Interior Design at the White House School of Interior Design, winning a textile award. Tray spent the next five years in London working at Europe's largest publishing house while backpacking throughout India, South East Asia, Europe & South America, bringing a plethora of color, vibrancy, and a deep worldview. Tray eventually made her way Stateside where her staging company, Green Couch, was birthed alongside her greatest joy — motherhood.  

Tray resides in the Bay Area with her two daughters & CEO of the family, Poppy, the cat. In her spare time, Tray communes with nature — hiking, dunking in the ocean, and harvesting spring water cliffside. With love for tea ceremonies,  poetry musings, cooking to mantras, bird watching, and tending to family, Tray creates beauty with precision and detail wherever she goes.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is rest and relax. When we relax, our thoughts and habituated patterns start dissipating, and we can settle into the deeper layers of ourselves. In this deeper state of consciousness, freedom or awakening often arises spontaneously.

The beauty of this practice is that it requires no special methodology or training. It often happens when we least expect it. We all know how to awaken. 

This Opening to Your Depths meditation is about resting beneath it all. Complete rest includes letting go of all forms of mental effort. At the heart of rest is surrender, a letting go of it all. 

Sometimes it is lovely just to let go. I encourage my clients to take time from their everyday lives to just be. It is simple, so it is sometimes difficult to appreciate sitting meditation.

We can commit and dedicate our lives and hearts to letting go of what doesn’t serve us.

Meet Josefa James, a multiracial trailblazer and advocate for education, justice, people of color, and women. Born as the fourth child among ten siblings, Josefa grew up in a diverse household with a Creole father and an Irish mother, instilling a strong sense of cultural richness. 

The family's emphasis on education was pivotal in shaping Josefa's life. With a passion for learning, Josefa pursued higher education at the University of California Irvine, majoring in psychology. Pursuing her dream of being a civil rights attorney, she moved to San Francisco in 1976 to attend law school. After passing the bar exam, the position no longer existed, and her career took another turn.

San Francisco became Josefa's home for the next 47 years, where she immersed herself in building a close-knit community and raising her son as a dedicated single mother.

In 1989, she embarked on a career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, fighting for justice and fairness within the legal system. Throughout her  31 1/2 years in the role, Josefa left an indelible mark on the community and fought tirelessly for the rights of others.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Josefa nurtured a love of travel and writing. For over 54 years, she has been journaling to capture the essence of these adventures and reflections.
