The eight-rayed sun known as the Surya Majapahit is one of the most enduring symbols of the Majapahit Empire, appearing on stone gateways, royal seals, and temple reliefs from the 14th and 15th centuries. But what did this emblem actually mean to the Javanese kings who used it? In this episode, we trace the origins of the Surya Majapahit, its connection to Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, and its appearance at sites like the Bajang Ratu gate in Trowulan. We also explore the debate over whether it was a true state emblem or a later attribution, and how the symbol was revived in modern Indonesia—from the New Order's appropriation to contemporary national pride. Along the way, we discuss the mandala concept of kingship, the eight cardinal directions in Javanese thought, and the role of the sun god Surya in legitimizing Majapahit's maritime empire. A look at how a single image can carry the weight of history.

When Majapahit collapsed in the early 16th century, its Hindu-Javanese elite didn't vanish—they fled to Bali, carrying their culture, religion, and political traditions across the strait. This episode follows that exodus: the founding of the Gelgel kingdom under Dalem Ketut, the golden age of Dalem Waturenggong, and the enduring legacy of Majapahit in Balinese art, temple architecture, and court rituals. We explore how the empire found a second home on a neighbouring island, thanks to figures like the priest Nirartha and the sacred mountain temple Pura Besakih. Drawing on the Pararaton and Balinese chronicles, we trace the threads that connect Java's greatest empire to Bali's living Hindu culture.

In 1894, a Dutch scholar stumbled upon a palm-leaf manuscript in a Lombok palace that would rewrite Southeast Asian history: the Nagarakretagama, a 14th-century Javanese poem by the court poet Mpu Prapanca. This episode explores the poem's discovery, its portrait of Hayam Wuruk's golden age, and its candid glimpses of Majapahit's court, religion, and geography. We discuss Mpu Prapanca's role as a chronicler, the poem's structure as a kakawin, and how it became the single most important source for the empire we know today. From the king's royal tour to the list of tributary lands stretching from Sumatra to Papua, the Nagarakretagama is both a masterpiece of Old Javanese literature and a political document. We also touch on the controversy over its reinterpretation by modern historians and Indonesian nationalists. If you've ever wondered how we know what we know about Majapahit, this episode traces it back to one poet and one manuscript.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the twilight of Majapahit and the emergence of the Islamic sultanate of Demak, led by Raden Patah. They discuss the complex narrative of Raden Patah as the son of Majapahit's last king, Brawijaya V, and his role in the spread of Islam in Java. The conversation covers the support of the Wali Songo, particularly Sunan Ampel and Sunan Kalijaga, the symbolic founding of Demak in 1478, and the gradual shift of power from Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit to the Islamic coastal states. Lucas highlights the political and religious tensions, the role of trade, and the legacy of Majapahit cultural elements that persisted in Demak's court. The episode also touches on the historiography of the period, noting the blend of Javanese chronicles and European accounts.

In this episode, we explore the reign of Queen Suhita (1429–1447), the last effective ruler of Majapahit's Rajasa dynasty. Following the devastating Paregreg civil war, Suhita inherited a fractured empire and faced mounting challenges: the rise of the Islamic sultanate of Demak on the north coast, economic strain on the Pasisir ports, and internal court intrigues. We discuss her efforts to maintain Trowulan's authority, her connections to the Wali Songo, and how her rule foreshadowed the empire's eventual collapse. Along the way, we examine the role of women in Javanese kingship, the syncretic culture of the 15th century, and why Suhita remains a lesser-known but pivotal figure in Southeast Asian history. This episode draws on Javanese chronicles and archaeological evidence from Trowulan to reconstruct the last decades of Majapahit.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the vital role of the Brantas River in sustaining the Majapahit Empire. They discuss how the river's irrigation systems, flood management, and transportation networks enabled the rise of Trowulan as a metropolis. The conversation covers the engineering feats of dam construction, the political control of water resources, and the ecological challenges that eventually contributed to the empire's decline. Along the way, they touch on the connections between water management and religious rituals, as well as the legacy of Majapahit's hydraulic expertise in later Javanese kingdoms.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the literary and philosophical legacy of Majapahit through the lens of Mpu Tantular, the 14th-century poet who composed the Kakawin Sutasoma. This epic poem, written in Old Javanese during the reign of Hayam Wuruk, contains the famous phrase 'Bhinneka Tunggal Ika' — 'Unity in Diversity' — which later became Indonesia's national motto. Lucas unpacks the story of Prince Sutasoma, a tale of Buddhism, compassion, and the taming of a cannibal giant, and shows how it reflects Majapahit's policy of religious tolerance between Hinduism and Buddhism. The conversation also touches on how the poem was rediscovered in the 20th century and adopted by Indonesian nationalists, and what it tells us about the empire's cultural sophistication. A lesser-known contemporary of Mpu Prapanca, Tantular deserves his own spotlight. Listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of how a single line from a medieval kakawin still unites a modern nation.

In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the reign of Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi, the third monarch of Majapahit who ruled from 1328 to 1350. Often overshadowed by her son Hayam Wuruk and her minister Gajah Mada, Tribhuwana was a shrewd and capable leader who stabilized the empire after a series of crises. They discuss her rise to power following the murder of her brother Jayanagara, her suppression of the rebellion in Sadeng and Keta, and her pivotal decision to appoint Gajah Mada as mahapatih, allowing him to swear the famous Palapa Oath. The episode also covers her voluntary abdication to make way for her son, a move that secured a smooth transition and set the stage for Majapahit's golden age. Drawing from the Pararaton and Nagarakretagama, they examine Tribhuwana's legacy as a queen who ruled with strength and wisdom, and why she deserves a place among the great rulers of Southeast Asia.

After the fall of Singhasari, Wijaya allied with the Mongols to crush his enemy Jayakatwang, then turned on them, ambushed their forces, and established a new kingdom: Majapahit. This episode explores the diplomatic maneuvering, the Battle of Daha, and the chain of events that gave rise to one of Southeast Asia's greatest empires. We draw on the Nagarakretagama and Chinese records to reconstruct this pivotal moment.

The golden age of Hayam Wuruk and Gajah Mada gave way to succession crisis. After Hayam Wuruk's death in 1389, his daughter Kusumawardhani and her husband Wikramawardhana ruled, but Hayam Wuruk's son by a concubine, Bhre Wirabhumi, governed the eastern lands. Tensions erupted into the Paregreg civil war (1404–1406), a brutal conflict that pitted half-brothers against each other. Drawing on the Old Javanese chronicle 'Pararaton', we trace the assassination of Bhre Wirabhumi, the destruction of eastern palaces, and the war's lasting toll on the empire. This episode examines how internal rivalry drained Majapahit's resources, loosened its grip on vassals, and paved the way for the rise of Islamic states like Demak. A turning point that transformed the Nusantara political landscape.
