Majipa Lakhey, the “Peaceful Lakhey,” is a guardian figure in Kathmandu’s folklore. Originally a fierce demon brought by goddess Taleju Bhawani during a famine, he was left behind to protect the city. To live peacefully among the citizens, he renounced his violent nature and became the protector of Majipa Tol. Featured in the annual Indra Jatra festival, his powerful dance symbolizes the balance between chaos and peace, reflecting the themes of harmony, protection, and transformation in Kathmandu’s cultural identity.
