Make a Difference! – The Mentors Radio episodes

  • 327. Admiral Michael G. Mullen, USN (ret.) on Principled Leadership, First-hand Experiences, Learnings and More

In this episode, The Mentors Host Dan Hesse talks with Admiral Michael G. Mullen, U.S. Navy (ret.), who served as the 17th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2007, to September 30, 2011, and who previously served as the Navy’s 28th chief of Naval Operations. Culling from real-world, first-hand experiences and learnings, retired Admiral Mullen shares valuable leadership principles and skills he honed over the years that apply to anyone, in any industry, who seeks to find happiness and fulfillment in his or her career and life.

One thing that stands out in this interview is Mullen’s humility—clarity of leadership principles and humility—especially when one considers what it means to have been the highest ranking military officer in the country, serving under two U.S. presidents. Like all of our hosts and guests, he wants YOU to succeed at what YOU are passionate about, in life and work. That’s a true, ethical and remarkable mentor!

Considered to be one of the most influential chairmen of the Joint Chiefs in history, Admiral Mullen oversaw the end of the combat mission in Iraq and the development of a new military strategy for Afghanistan. He oversaw the promotion of international partnership, the integration of new technologies, and new counter-terrorism tactics that facilitated the killing of Osama bin Laden.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing, literally, for Mullen. As a young officer his first big naval leadership assignment did not go well. He was given a second chance and his persistence and perseverance—and a good mentor—led him to ultimately becoming the highest-ranking military officer in the country, whose career Fast Company referred to as “a case study in 21st Century leadership.” Mullen now teaches at the U.S. Naval Academy and remains a dedicated supporter of service members, veterans and their families.

In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Dan Hesse talks with Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross. An outstanding leader, with one of the most distinguished and eclectic careers imaginable, McGovern rose from being a programmer at AT&T to becoming president of AT&T’s Business Markets group and, later, president of the Consumer Markets group—the communication giant’s two largest business units. McGovern left AT&T at the top of her game to become President of Personal Investments at Fidelity, and then went across town to become a Professor at the Harvard Business School.

But McGovern finally found her purpose in 2008, when she joined the American Red Cross as its CEO, a position she still holds today. During her tenure, Gail has overseen the American Red Cross response to multiple high-profile disasters across the country and around the world, including Hurricanes Sandy, Harvey, Irma and Maria, as well as the multitude of tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires and other disasters that affect our country each year.

Gail earned her Bachelors degree from Johns Hopkins and an MBA from Columbia, and has been recognized as alumna of the year from both universities. She’s also been recognized by Fortune as one of the 50 most powerful women in corporate America. Her learnings and experiences are invaluable in mentoring others to finding their own unique sense of purpose, as you’ll hear from this remarkable and inspiring interview…

In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with Peggy Stanton, ABC-TV’s first woman news correspondent in Washington D.C., about her pioneering journey into journalism at a time when very few women were in the field. What attracted her to a career in journalism? Peggy shares some highlights of her experiences as an ABC news correspondent in D.C. and more. She also talks about principles of good journalism. Her storied world experiences include politicians and celebrities such as Lyndon Johnson, Fidel Castro, Julia Andrews, Saint Pope John Paul II, Salvador Dali and more. Focused on career, she did not anticipate marrying a Congressman along the way, whose career segued to international business. You’ll also learn about Peggy’s very unexpected life-changing experience in a former communist bloc country, in a small town called Medjugorje which she visited with her daughter, at her daughter’s urging.

A compelling writer, Stanton recently penned a book (From the White House to the White Cross) about her career and experiences that many have praised as “you can’t put it down!” (see below)

In today’s episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with John Sitomer, a fitness entrepreneur and dad, most known as the founder of South Florida’s Council of Dads. He spent 1/3 of his life battling cancer and now is dedicated to mentoring kids and leading by example.

“I spent one third of my life battling cancer. I’m thrilled it was me!” Sitomer says. For John, battling cancer has made him a better person and led him to discover his calling in life, namely, to mentor boys and girls who need a positive parental influence.

During John’s second bout with cancer, he didn’t know if he was going to make it or not. A friend gave him a book that ultimately changed his life, but he was so sick from cancer treatments that he did not even have the strength to open the book or turn a page until about 10 months after he received it! As you listen to the show, you’ll hear the whole story and it’s a WOW! that’ll certainly spark ideas and inspiration for YOU, wherever you are, in whatever business you’re in, in whatever situation you face.

John talks about “brotherhood” vs. “friendship,” about “Pay it Forward” vs. being a victim, and about the blessings of seeing inner-city kids being transformed into confident, positive, givers.

He talks about the men who told told him they’d been waiting a lifetime for something like this (that is, becoming part of the South Florida’s Council of Dads) where they can give back! John talks about having NO fear! NO FEAR!

The book John received, by the way, is The Council of Dads, written by another dad, Bruce Feiler, who had faced a similar situation as he also had battled cancer. You can find it listed in our Show Notes below.

In today’s episode of The Mentors Radio Host Dan Hesse talks with Jack Swarbrick, Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame (UND), about his unlikely—and unexpected—transition from a 28-year career with the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels (he was made partner in 1987), to become UND’s 12th Athletics Director in 2008. He’s now in his 15th year as the James E. Rohr Director of Athletics (AD) at Univ. of Notre Dame.

Because of his wide-ranging experience in the business of, and governance of, athletics through representing organizations such as the NCAA and the US Olympic committee as a successful lawyer before becoming an athletic director, Jack is particularly influential in matters impacting college athletics. His on-the-field performance is impressive. During his tenure as Athletic Director:

                            • Nine Notre Dame teams have won NCAA national championships
                            • 11 teams have been runners-up
                            • Notre Dame men have won two Capital One Cups given annually to the NCAA’s best overall Division I mens athletic program
                            • Born in Yonkers, NY, and raised in Yonkers and Bloomington, IN, Swarbrick is a 1976 magna cum laude graduate of Notre Dame, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Upon graduating from Stanford University Law School in 1980, he accepted a position as an associate in the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels. He and his wife, Kimberly, have four now-grown children and a growing number of grandchildren.

In this episode, you’ll learn how Swarbrick’s career took a surprising and successful turn; life-changing advice he’s taken to heart along the way; and the importance of good character, good leadership, loving what you do, and staying open to opportunities!

Jack and Dan discuss new initiatives in college athletics, how to mentor and develop character, and how to choose the right leader for any position—critical skills both in athletics and in business.

An outspoken critic of recent changes in college sports — including “Name, Image and Likeness” of student athletes, and the “Transfer Portal” — Jack discusses with Dan how these money-driven programs can reduce a University’s ability to genuinely mentor students and, most importantly, to develop character. They also discuss Jack’s call for the NFL and NBA to allow 18-year olds to pursue a professional path after high school, instead of attending college, in order to avoid collegiate athletics becoming little more than the minor leagues. You’ll also learn about Jack’s mentors and more!
