We are called to live lives that honor God by respecting others. A life of honor/respect is the most compelling way to point others to Jesus.

Peter continues his exhortation by focusing on the response of slaves to mistreatment. Slaves, as those with no rights, become a model for all Christians who may well be despised and rejected in the world. But the mistreatment toward Christians should not be a shock to his readers. The whole book is full of allusions to suffering. But their suffering is simply in line with the treatment of Jesus. Peter explains how Christ suffered as an example for them but then reminds them that His death was more than an example: it was an atoning sacrifice for their sins. At one time, they were outside the fold, but now, by God's grace, his readers have come back to the care of the Great Shepherd who guards their souls, no matter what life holds for them.

Peter now turns our attention to how we live a life of submission to God in this world. In this section, he covers the government. Later he writes about work and the home. A keyword in this section is honor. We are called to live lives that honor God. We honor God by respecting others even if/when we disagree with them; and even when they wrong us.

After fleshing out what it looks like to have a living hope, Peter reminds the people that God will never stop working. Jesus gave a promise to Peter that He would build His church. Peter remembers those words and calls the church to trust in what God is doing.

The first thing Peter writes about is God. He points the church to what God has done, what He is doing, and what He will do. God guarantees our salvation. We then can rejoice in our salvation. Even though life is hard, we have hope. And that hope is a living hope.
