Make It Last with Victor Medina - Legal & Financial Retirement Planning episodes

  • Make It Last – Ep 97 – Keeping Up With Your Pay Stub & Index or Mutual Funds – Which is Better for You?
In the first half of the show, Victor explains the importance of keeping a close eye on your pay stubs. You want to make sure that your retirement funding is exactly how you had indicated you wanted it to be, your pay is being calculated appropriately, and always pay close attention whenever a big change happens in your life.
In the second half of the show, Victor compares and contrasts index and mutual funds. He goes over the specifics of each fund and gives his recommendation on which one he feels is better for retirement.
Make It Last with Victor Medina is hosted by Victor J. Medina, an estate planning and Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA®) and Certified Financial Planner™ professional (CFP). Through his law firm and independent registered investment advisory company, Victor provides 360º Wealth Protection Strategies for individuals in or nearing retirement.

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last” helping you keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest eggs secure with your host, Victor Medina, an estate‑planning, elder law attorney, and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Everybody, welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host Victor Medina. I’m glad you can join us for another fun and exciting journey down the road towards legal and financial retirement salvation. I’m here as your guide.
I’ve got a really exciting show for you today. I want to cover a couple of different things. We’re going to talk about specific kinds of funds into the 21st century and how you can use them in your portfolio.
The thing about it is the world that we live today is constantly changing, ample examples of these. If you go out and ask a family member from a prior generation, technology today might be one of the most evolving changes and even, I guess, Baby Boomers can attest to that.
I tell you, my mom, especially, and dad are really into their iPads and the way they consume information it’s completely changed their life. My mom, being from Puerto Rico, is so excited that she can read the newspaper on her iPad. It’s just crazy how much technology has evolved and changed the way that we’ve been doing things.
Even just the concept of the phone. 20 or 30 years ago, you might have been lucky enough to have a cell phone that could call and maybe text your contacts. In order to do that, you had to spell out the words using [laughs] one number for three letters. You could never use the number one. B was number two. Number two is also A and C. It’s crazy. Today, we’ve got phones that can do just about everything.
I know that I’m out with my son often. I’m like, “You have the entire encyclopedia of knowledge of the world at your fingertips. Stop watching a video of somebody else playing a game and maybe look that up.”
Not only is technology changing, but so are many other things in this world. Retirement is changing completely. As opposed to 20 or 30 years ago, today, retirement planning is much more prevalent, because pensions are becoming scarce or are scarce.
Social Security has got question marks around it. People are trying to get some security around their retirement and making sure that everything is in place. They have to change the way they approach it. You, the retiree, or pre‑retiree needs to be a lot more proactive and start building a plan for your retirement. That includes how you invest your money.
The prior shows, more recently, we’ve been talking about retirement theory, and haven’t gotten into the weeds of specific kinds of investments and things that should be in your portfolio.

  • Make It Last – Ep 96 – Hoping for the Best but Preparing for the Worst
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in retirement is to not plan if things don’t end up going how you hoped. Victor’s advice in this episode is – hope for the best, but always have a plan for the worst.

I know that you’ve been waiting all week for another fun episode, so I’m glad to be able to deliver. I am excited for today’s show. Today’s show, we’re going to talk about why safety is so important for today’s retirement.
I want to talk about, why the three‑legged stool of retirement is broken and what you can do to fix it. Before we get into that, I want to share with you a couple of upcoming items.
If you’re interested in learning a little bit more about different things that are going on, we’re hosting some stuff over at my firm. There’s some stuff going on in the community. I do want to make you aware of that.
Actually, coming up on April 4th, we are going to be hosting, in our resource center, in Pennington, New Jersey, the Hopewell Senior Services along with AARP are going to be hosting a driver refresh course. We’re going to be hosting that on our campus at 230 West Delaware.
If you are interested in this, or if you know somebody that might be interested in this that course is going to be going on during the day on Thursday, April 4th, you can definitely look into that.
Second thing is I’m going to be speaking at dependent and Presbyterian Church the next day on April 5th. Just around lunchtime, 12:00 or 12:30, I’m going to be covering a topic called how to get your legal ducks in a row that’s going to be hosted at the painting Presbyterian Church in Pennington, New Jersey.
If you’re interested in doing attending that it’s part of their older adult ministry. I’m sure they would be happy to bring somebody along and give them opportunity to learn a little bit more about what they do. You’d have the opportunity to learn something about legal planning. That would be great for you as well.
Finally, we’re going to be hosting something in later April. If you’re interested in that April 29th, we’ve got a lunch and learn, and that lunch and learn is going to focus on how to get ahead of the curb for your tax planning for 2019.
We’re going to do it after you’ve already had to file your taxes. No matter your taxes are done for 2018 you’ve filed them already. April 29th on Monday ‑‑ here again, on our campus ‑‑ we’re going to be hosting a lunch and learn. We’re going to provide some light lunch ‑‑ sandwiches that kind of thing.
If you are interested in attending that you can reach out to us on 609‑818‑0068 and let us know and we will put you on the calendar.
We got a lot fun and exciting stuff that are going to be coming down the road.

  • Make It Last – Ep 95 – How Much is Enough?
How will you know how much you need to retire? Victor encourages you to ignore the outside noises telling you there is some sort of magic amount of money you need to retire. Your retirement fund should revolve around your lifestyle, not the recommendation of someone on TV who does not know you.

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last,” helping you keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest egg secure, with your host, Victor Medina, an estate planning and elder law attorney and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host Victor Medina. I’m so glad that you can join us this Wednesday morning for another fun edition as we will travel down the road of legal and financial retirement planning.
We’ve got a great topic for you here for you today. We’re going to be talking about why you may not need as much to retire as you’re being told. I remember, I was watching one of the episodes of America’s favorite financial sweetheart, Suze Orman, and she said that you need five million dollars to retire.
I thought to myself, “There’s no possible way that she’s right.” I can’t believe that we’re sharing that kind of information. Whatever it is that you’re being told that you need to save, I don’t know how to know where that number is correct, right? We don’t really know whether a million dollars is right, $5 million is right. Do you need more than that? Can you retire on less?
It’s a really good question to ask because, if you’re thinking about retiring, you’re not sure whether or not you have saved enough money to do so, you might defer the million‑dollar rule of thumb, but I’m here to tell you that you might want to avoid that for just a second.
I’ve met many people who can retire, have retired, and are living successfully in retirement all while having a portfolio that has substantially less than a million dollars. How are you going to know what it is that you need? I want to talk to you about that today.
Before we jump into the topic, I want to remind you, if you were listening on the radio, one of the things that we do is we simulcast this show as a podcast. We know that we’ve got a number of podcast subscribers out there. The metrics kind of let us know that a bunch of you do listen on the podcast.
If you don’t want to listen to us right as we’re broadcasting at 11:00 AM, one of the things you can do is subscribe to the podcast. You can go to Apple iTunes, or you can go to makeitlastradio.com. Just throw those four words together and you can either stream or subscribe to that.
That way every episode will get delivered to your device. At the same time, if you ever want to go back and listen to any of the other episodes that we’ve done in the past, you can do that as well.
I’m super excited because, for those people that are on the podcast version of it, in the next week or so you’re going to see a new logo arrive around the subscription. When you click on it, it’s going to have a new logo around it. We’re in the process of finalizing it, and I’m super excited about it.
What we’ve had for a long while is this blue squ...

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last,” helping keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest eggs secure. With your host, Victor Medina, an estate planning and elder law attorney and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Everybody, welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host, Victor Medina, and I’m so glad that you can join us this Wednesday morning on another fun ride into the world of legal and financial retirement planning.
We have a great show for you today. In fact, what we’re going to be covering is some of the common retirement regrets and ways to overcome them. Making mistakes, I suppose, can be really demoralizing, especially when one is very significant, in terms of mistakes. We’re all human.
Unfortunately, we’re all going to be making mistakes throughout our lifetime. Many people really view themselves negatively. They let those mistakes that they may affect them in a negative way.
One of the things that I’ve really been into over the last couple of years is a practice of mindfulness. One of the tenants of that is really that you live in the moment. You don’t shoot yourself with second and third arrows over mistakes that you’ve made, really put things into perspective.
You deal with the right things at the right time. If you make a mistake over life, best thing that you can do is learn from it. Successful people in the world are ones that still make mistakes, but they used the mistakes as fuel. They learn from them, and they were better people because of them.
Then these successful people are the ones that may not hardly ever be afraid to make mistakes because then those experiences will build their character. I remember I was working with my trainer the other day. One of the things she asked me, “You really jump out there, and you do things. Aren’t you afraid of failing?” I said, [laughs] “No, no.”
I’m very afraid of failing in the sense that I would like not to do that, but I’ve had this cycle where I’ll go out and I’ll try something. It will work out, and then I’ll try it again. Then other times I will fail at whatever it is that I’m trying. But then I’m able to persist and succeed and learn from it. I’ve just gotten into this very comfortable habit of knowing that it’s OK to try things.
I don’t really live in their mistakes. When you think about it in the context of retirement, I think there are a lot of pre‑retirees that fear retirement. They fear the thought of possibly running out of money. I think that’s the case for many of them. Retirement’s so significant in a time in one’s life. It’s the latter half of your life that could last anywhere from 25 to 30 years.
You completely re‑identified who you are. You changed all of that up. It’s also one of these things that mistakes, when they’re different there,

  • Make It Last – Ep 93 – Assisted Suicide Legal Updates & Common Retirement Mistakes
Assisted suicide has been a controversial topic for years. Some believe it is every person’s right to choose when they are going to end their life, while others believe it is morally wrong to end someone’s life, no matter the circumstances. Listen this week, as Victor goes over some legal updates that could allow terminally ill patients to choose when they would like to end their life.
In the second half of the show, Victor goes over some common retirement mistakes and how to avoid them. Remember, planning in advanced, will always help avoid any mistakes!

This is the only show that has got a host that is an expert in both of those areas. That’s me. I’m so glad that you can join us for another great edition. I’m really excited for today. We’re going to cover two topics.
The first topic we’re going to cover is regarding an introduced bill in New Jersey to see whether or not we can grant assisted suicide or helping terminally ill people end their life. I want to talk to you about the details about that, give you the straight dope on what that is.
Then we’re also going to cover some common mistakes that people make that could impact their retirement. I want to help you understand what those mistakes are and, then, help you avoid them. It’s going to be a really good show.
If you don’t already have a pad and paper handy to take notes, then you might want to do that, especially as we get to the second and third segment for today. A quick reminder. If you can’t join us when we broadcast live, then one of the things you can do is subscribe to the podcast.
We are going to have an opportunity to send this to your phone. When it arrives, you’ll get not only this episode and all the future episodes, but you can even go into the podcast software and go backwards and look at other episodes as well. There might be a topic in there that you want to learn more about.
I also have a couple of speaking engagements that are coming up. Tomorrow at 4:30, at CareOne Hamilton, I’m going to be speaking with a gentleman named John Walsh who’s actually been a guest on the show. His company’s called the Walsh Senior Solutions.
He helps people get theirselves ready for that next phase in life ‑‑ downsizing, getting their stuff together, getting it prepared to move ‑‑ either downsizing it into a smaller living space or just getting ready for that next phase, getting their home and living situation going there.
He got some experience dealing with that with his parents, which he shared on a prior episode. If you’re interested, you can look backwards, listening to that. Listen, we are going to cover how to get your legal affairs in order as well at this talk.

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last,” helping you keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest egg secure with your host, Victor Medina, an estate planning and elder law attorney and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Hi, everybody. Welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host, Victor Medina. I’m glad you can join us for another edition of Make It Last here on WCTC 1450 AM. I am excited to talk to you today, because I’ve got a couple of subjects that I’ve been wanting to get to for a little while.
One of the things that we’re going to cover today are ways to make your planning for retirement easier. The second thing I want to do is recently there was an article that came out in “The Wall Street Journal” that I was alerted to essentially by a faithful listener out in the Chicago area.
A friend of mine who wanted to let me know that there was an article about annuities. It was really interesting if you dove through that, a lot of the preconceived notions about what annuities are and why people should like them or shouldn’t like them.
I thought it was great because I actually asked them a bunch of questions about the article before I read it and it was so well representative of the way that people are either misinformed about what the product is or properly informed but kind of ignorant about other areas. I’ll explain a little bit what I mean on that.
Basically, the idea is just people have this notion about it, and the notion might be right as to a very limited sliver of the way that it works, but at the end of it they may not know all of the other options that are available.
Anyway, before we get started with today’s show, a couple of really quick announcements. The first thing is that we had two successful seminars and workshops in our space.
I want to thank those of you that came out to attend that, especially a couple of you that are new that came just from the radio show. I wanted to thank you for doing that.
By the way, if you’d like to be alerted to other workshops that we’re going to be hosting in and around the area, it is important for you to continue to listen to the show.
If you’re listening live today, one of the things that I’m doing is, later this afternoon I have a speaking engagement at Homestead at Hamilton and that’s at six o’clock today, Wednesday, February 13th. This is all about getting your ducks in a row for your legal planning.
If you’d like to attend that, you can go ahead and reach out to Kelly Astbury at Homestead at Hamilton and see if they have any more slots available. Homestead at Hamilton is a living arrangement that I have featured on the show in the past.
One of the more novel ways of creating an assisted living type scenario, but there are independent houses that are in there, a lot about their activities.

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last,” helping you keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest egg secure. With your host Victor Medina, an estate planning and elder law attorney and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Hi, everybody. Welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host Victor Medina. I’m so glad you could join us this Wednesday morning for another fun edition of Make It Last, where we get to talk all about legal and retirement planning and all the stuff that you need to do in order to get yourself up, ready, and looking forward to that last act of life.
I want to talk to you today about promoting your retirement accounts in 2019. Everybody starts the New Year with a set of goals, and people want to figure out what’s going to be their New Year’s resolution.
They’re going to sit through and they’ll say, “This time I going to exercise more, I’m going to try to eat less.” I don’t know how many of these things are always focused on health but it always seems like we take this opportunity to really examine what we have on our personal life. It’s a good time to actually take a look on your financial and legal planning life as well.
We all have started this year with different ideas on what we want to achieve. Nobody has exactly the same set of goals, and exactly the same things that they want to achieve, because they’re not starting from the same place.
No matter what you think when the ball drops and the New Year begins, you probably have a few things that you’d like to get done this year. Question is, how many of us will actually achieve those goals?
I think it’s interesting because if you look at any of the news reports that are out there, they’ll let you know that the majority of people give up on their goals before even the month of January comes to an end.
Here we are in February. I am going to be your motivational guru, at least on the legal and financial goals setting side. We are going to recommit to new goals that we’ve got for 2019. We’re going to sweep under the table, what happened in January, you may have started, but it’s OK.
We can start again and we can begin with a new recommitment to our goals. If it comes to saving for retirement, you can do that well.
We still have time to achieve that. I think that part of the biggest obstacle, is that there’s many people who are pre‑retirees today that are afraid of retiring because they don’t think they’ve got enough saved and they’re not prepared.
We’re going to aim the program today towards those individuals. I spend a lot of time already talking to people in retirement or people who are already in retirement. I don’t spend as much time coaching people who are on the pre‑retirement side.
We’re going to talk to you today. We’re going to give you some information that will help you prepare for your retirement golden years...

If you ask any builder…I have the experience where I bought an older home. I bought a home that was built in 1878. It’s celebrated 140 years. When I went to go buy that home, it didn’t look great. [laughs]

Announcer:  Welcome to “Make It Last.” Helping you keep your legal ducks in a row and your nest egg secure. With your host, Victor Medina, an estate planning and elder law attorney, and certified financial planner.
Victor J. Medina:  Welcome back to Make It Last. I’m your host, Victor Medina. I’m so glad you can join us this Wednesday morning as we surf the waves of retirement together. I’m excited to bring to you today’s show.
We’re largely going to be talking about what the future holds with respect of either being a bull or bear market in 2019. With the end that we’ve had to 2018, what does the future hold? We’re going to talk all about that today.
Before we do, I want to remind everybody who’s listening on the radio that we actually simulcast this as a podcast. If you’re not around to join us on Wednesday morning at 11:00, we have the opportunity for you to listen to this show.
All you have to do is either find your grandchild and ask them how to load a podcast, or go to iTunes or anywhere you have a podcast catcher. You can Google it. Look for Make It Last with Victor Medina.
You load that up. Not only would you get every episode that we broadcast, but you will also get all the prior episodes as well. In fact, if you’d like, you can go onto Spotify, which is a free streaming music service. You can go on there and you can search for Make It Last.
We actually have all 80‑something episodes all there. You can go back to your heart’s content. Prior to the last few weeks or so, every episode’s about 30 minutes, so you can digest them in small pockets.
These shows, we’ll go closer to about an hour and in three segments. You can listen to your heart’s content. Anyway, if you like this show, not only should you subscribe to it, but you should ask a friend to do that as well. Just go on, hit the subscribe button, and that will actually help us climb up the leaderboards in Apple.
I think we’re probably ‑‑ I don’t know ‑‑ near the bottom. [laughs] There’s a lot of podcasts out there. There’s actually going to be a really great segment on Sunday morning, on CBS Sunday Morning, on just the growth of podcasts. If you’re interested in that topic, definitely take a listen to that as well.
Listen, today I wanted to talk to you about what’s going on in the markets. Most people are wondering the same thing these days when it comes down to investing, which is what’s going on with the market. After a phenomenally consistent and a robust stock market for each of 2017, even so much 2016, 2018 proved to be quite, quite different.
While we are still technically under the way that they look at these things in the longest bull market run in American stock market history, many investors, especially retirees, have begun to question just how low the market could inevitably go.
