  • Entrepreneurship & Leadership: Building a Business Through People and Community with Matt Estrin

What does it take to turn a passion into a thriving business and continue growing as an entrepreneur along the way?

In this episode of Make Your Passion Pay, I sit down with Matt Estrin, entrepreneur, author, and founder and CEO of 477 Distilling, to talk about entrepreneurship, leadership, core values, community, creativity, and the lessons that come from building businesses firsthand.

After spending 15 years as a pastor, Matt felt a growing pull toward a new passion. That journey led him into distilling and eventually sparked an even greater passion for entrepreneurship. Over the past several years, he has launched seven businesses and discovered how much he loves creating businesses, developing people, and encouraging fellow entrepreneurs.

One of Matt’s biggest lessons is the importance of getting out into your community. Building relationships, becoming a familiar face, participating in networking organizations, serving on boards, and supporting local causes have all played a meaningful role in growing his businesses. His philosophy is simple: the more your community knows, likes, and trusts you, the more opportunities you create for people to support your business.

We also explore how Matt’s core values guide his businesses. His teams focus on serving people, supporting the community, and embracing creativity. These values shape the customer experience while giving employees opportunities to contribute their ideas, use their talents, and take ownership of their work.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • How passion can evolve into a new entrepreneurial path
    • Why community involvement can support business growth
    • How core values guide leadership and company culture
    • Ways networking and relationship building create business opportunities
    • How empowering your team develops stronger leaders
    • Why creativity and collaboration strengthen the customer experience
    • How working on your business creates greater freedom for the owner
    • Why people, purpose, and persistence are powerful parts of entrepreneurship

Matt shares a great example of team empowerment through the creative process at 477 Distilling. His employees collaborate to develop new cocktail menus, with team members contributing their own creations. Giving his people opportunities to lead and create allows their talents to shine while giving Matt more time to build relationships throughout his community.

This conversation is a great reminder that business success reaches far beyond a great product or service. People, relationships, community, creativity, and intentional leadership can create the foundation for a business that grows and makes a meaningful impact.

Tune in for an energizing conversation about entrepreneurship, small business growth, leadership development, company culture, networking, community involvement, and turning your passion into a business you love.

  • Business Succession Planning: Protect Your Business and Build Your Legacy with Scherrie L. Prince

What are you building today that you want to continue creating value for years to come?

In this episode of Make Your Passion Pay, I sit down with Scherrie L. Prince, attorney, founder, strategist, host of the Play Big Faster Podcast, and author of the forthcoming book Build the Moat First. Scherrie helps entrepreneurs bring their business plans, estate plans, and long-term vision together so they can create businesses designed for control, continuity, protection, and legacy.

Together, we explore what it means to begin with the end in mind. Scherrie encourages business owners to envision the life and legacy they want to create and then reverse engineer the business structures needed to support that vision. From estate planning and succession planning to governance and risk management, she shares practical ways entrepreneurs can build a strong foundation around everything they are creating.

Scherrie also introduces her four essential outcomes for founders: control, continuity, protection, and legacy. She explains how thoughtful business structures, governance, standard operating procedures, risk management, and succession planning work together to create what she calls a "moat" around your company.

We also talk about the importance of creating a "money team" of trusted advisors. Scherrie shares how bringing together professionals such as your attorney, accountant, banker, insurance professional, and tax planner creates greater collaboration around your bigger vision. Rather than viewing each area independently, your advisors can work together to help you build toward the future you envision.

And protecting your legacy extends beyond paperwork. Scherrie and I explore how company culture, leadership, systems, and an empowered team contribute to a business that can continue thriving beyond its founder. Creating a culture people believe in, and systems they can carry forward, gives business owners greater freedom today while strengthening the company's future.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • How to begin with the end in mind when building your business
    • Why your business plan and estate plan belong in the same conversation
    • The four essential outcomes of control, continuity, protection, and legacy
    • How succession planning supports long-term business success
    • Why building a trusted "money team" strengthens your business strategy
    • How governance, systems, and risk management help build your business moat
    • The role company culture plays in creating a lasting legacy
    • How building a business that can operate beyond you creates greater freedom
    • Practical steps you can take today to begin protecting what you're building

Scherrie also shares more about her forthcoming book, Build the Moat First. Designed as a practical resource for business owners, the book offers actionable steps founders can begin implementing as they build their businesses, assemble their money teams, and create the legacy that's in their hearts.

This conversation is filled with valuable insights for entrepreneurs, small business owners, founders, and leaders who want to build businesses with intention, create sustainable growth, and turn today's success into a meaningful long-term legacy.

Tune in to discover how thoughtful planning, strong business structures, trusted advisors, and an intentional vision can help you protect what you're building and create a business that truly lasts.

    Let's make your passion pay!

    Meet Scherrie

Scherrie L. Prince is an attorney, founder strategist, and host of the Play Big Faster Podcast. She advises entrepreneurs and business owners on ownership, governance, succession, and exit planning, helping founders build structure that protects what they create instead of leaving it to chance.

Her path into this work was not planned. She lost her first business to a failed partnership with no governance in place, watched her grandparents' estate turn into a family dispute because there was no will or trust, and then lost everything else in the 2008 collapse. All three happened in her twenties. Those losses led her to law school at 30 and to a simple conviction that has shaped her entire practice since: structure is the moat, and it has to be built before success arrives, not after.

Today Scherrie helps founders design their businesses for control, continuity, and long-term value before growth creates risks that are hard to unwind. She is the author of the forthcoming book Build the Moat First, and she brings both the legal framework and the lived experience of learning it the hard way.
