In this story of Making, undergraduates River Allison and Erica Long talk with us about the popular Purdue Sewing and Design Club. With up to 20-30 students regularly registering to attend the bi-weekly meetings, and over 100 GroupMe members, clearly students across campus want to learn to sew. River, Erica, and Tate Walsh (who couldn’t make the interview) have built something special for Purdue students. They offer a safe and inclusive environment where anyone can learn the basics of sewing, and with guidance, complete full garments. In this episode, they give examples of what students have made, what makes the organization unique, and talk about the possibly of a fashion show next academic year.

This story of making explores a comparison between a professor developing a made assignment and a student completing that made assignment. In Part 1 of this episode, we talk with Professor Brian Hitselberger, senior lecturer in the Rueff School of Design, Art & Performance, about a wearable sculpture project he designed within a curriculum. In Part 2, we talk with Megan Miltimore, a second-year student in graphic design and film and video production, about her experience making the wearable sculpture, which she called the “Owl Warrior.” Both Professor Hitselberger and Megan discuss differences between text assignments and made assignments.

This story of making delves into the creation of an AI tool called Quasi, leading to a broader discussion of making and AI. We welcome Shantanu Roy and Thomas Stahura to the podcast as our guests.
This story of making comes from a Purdue University engineering alumnus, Matt Fitzgerald, who paid tribute to the university with his co-creators in the form of a penny press. This installment tells the tale of his work in taking one of Purdue University’s most iconic landmarks—the bell tower—and scaling it down to miniature form.
Welcome to our final episode with Mark Crook, a sophomore in the Engineering Technology Teacher Education program. Mark talks with us about the Bechtel Innovation Design Center (BIDC) where he is a peer mentor and the jewelry and small metal casting lab manager. In this final episode, Mark explains what’s available at the BIDC, how to submit a project, the types of metals used in his lab, a process called flame painting, and some of the various jewelry projects him and his students have produced. If you aren’t already working with Mark, by the end of this episode, you’ll thinking about what type of metal jewelry you want to make and how to get in queue to work with him!
