During the Covid epidemic, global supply chains collapsed, leading to shortages of many critical goods. It is happening again with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. We are experiencing shortages in oil, natural gas, fertilizer, aluminum and sulphur. The country that has spent many decades preparing for this is China. They have built massive surpluses in critical minerals, fossil fuels and grains … to be tapped into, during times like these. Other countries, who haven’t been nearly as well prepared, are starting to follow China’s example and create stockpiles of their own. This extra demand has some believing we could be entering a commodities super cycle lasting a decade or more.
