Malaysians In Desperate Need For Donated Organ

Listen Later

If there is one thing money cannot buy, at least legally, it's an organyou require for transplant.

Steve Jobs had a liver transplant before he died. Even MarkZuckerberg has thrown the power and reach of Facebook behindthe cause: you can now pledge, on Facebook, for your organs to bedonated when you die.

But this is one life-and-death matter that is very much easier saidthan done. In Malaysia, nearly 200,000 people have pledged to donatetheir organs but according to the National Transplant ResourceCentre, the number of actual organ donors to date totals 364 since theprogramme started in 1976!

Last year achieved the highest number of donors with a mere total of 47 – while there are some 15,000 people waiting for organ donation.

This issue was raised recently by the Health Minister Datuk Seri LiowTiong Lai again on World Kidney Day 2012 recently.
Doing our bit to help the cause, we've invited our guest this evening, back for the second time, to talk about the matter.
