"Psalms of Ascent Series", Quiet Time Coaching: Episode 222, Psalm 132v17

You have found a daily podcast based on the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134).

They are designed to help our hearts and minds being a healthy place while the Covid 19 virus does its worst.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1–4 NIV11)

Each day we will meditate on a verse or two from these wonderful Psalms as we make our pilgrimage from confusion to hope, pain to peace, anxiety to joy.

Zech’s prophecy: Lk 1:67-71. Jesus as the strength of our salvation - he has all the strength, Rev 5:11-12.

  • S1 Ep51: "Initiative does not need permission", Newsletter, Episode 51
Several events happened this week to remind me that initiative does not need permission.

The success of the "Is there a message in the mayhem?" series astonished me. Certainly I had high hopes. However, the global reach, the larger than expected numbers and the grateful feedback took me by surprise. The full session can be found here.  We are planning more events for the future. Please keep us in your prayers and give us suggestions for topics and format.

Several aspects of the teaching series set it apart. One of which was that it was not a church-planned event. Simply a group of six friends hoping to inspire one another and help anyone else who might be interested. On the back of this series I have had two other conversations this week with people who had ideas but felt they needed permission. They were really good ideas. It makes sense to consulting the community, but initiative does not need permission.

The book of Acts reveals event after event and initiative after initiative taken by followers of Jesus prompted by the Spirit. Permission not sought nor required. It should go without saying I'm not talking about making foolish decisions without careful consideration and the advice of the wise. My point is that perhaps too often we are looking for permission rather than seeking to exercise our gifts and inspiration for whoever and wherever might be helpful.

What if Martin Luther King had waited for permission?

My new series on preaching and teaching was inspired by a request from Jose in the Philippines. The introductory class focuses on the locus of our confidence. Is it in my competence, or the power of the sword of the Spirit?  If our confidence is in the Lord, we can move forward boldly and find successful ways to serve the kingdom and the lost without feeling we need permission. I wonder how many followers of Jesus are not flourishing because they are waiting for permission. I wonder how many of us who lead others are unintentionally stultifying the growth of the members and the advancement of the kingdom by creating or sustaining church cultures which imply the need for people to obtain permission for their heart-felt spiritual initiatives?

What if those early disciples had waited for permission before speaking to the Gentiles in Antioch? Acts 11.20.

The practice of controlling and containing initiative does not a healthy church grow.  There might be more mess with more initiative, but there will also be more success. Success without mess is an impossibility. The Spirit can handle the mess. So can we church leaders, if we are in tune with the Spirit.

    God bless, Malcolm

  • S1: “The connection between fear and peace”, Psalm 128
Sermon for the Watford church of Christ, 21 June 2020

    Introduction, v1

Question: Who or what is it good to fear?

    1. Blessings galore! vv2-4

    Fruit - security, vineyards
    Vine - sexual charm
    Olive shoots - vitality

    A pre-vision of God’s great plan
The reanimation of the original blessing
“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”” (Genesis 1:28 NIV11)

To be fulfilled at return of Jesus and bringing of kingdom of heaven to earth.

God’s desire is for our joy!

    1. How to live in healthy fear of the Lord and walk in obedience to him, vv1, 4

    A. Touched by fear
yare: origin, “to tremble” or be “short of breath.”

Question: Who can you think of who had this kind of experience?

    Moses - Ex 3.6
    Isaiah - Is 6.5
    Paul - Acts 22.6-8
    All had life-changing ‘yare’ experiences

What does it look like to walk in obedience?

    B. Motivated to walk in obedience
Moses - Ex 3.6 - led the people the way God wanted
Isaiah - Is 6.5 - spoke God’s Word to people
Paul - Acts 22.6-8 - preached God’s Word to the Gentiles

    Us - 1 Jn 2.3-6 - walking in a certain way

“They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.“Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.” (Hebrews 12:10–13 NIV11)

“If you go against the grain of the universe, you get splinters”. H. H. Farmer

    Conclusion, v6b
God’s desire is that we live at peace.
For a Christian this is because Jesus is with us.

  • S1 Ep203: Tuesday Teaching Tips: Episode 203. Introduction to a new teaching and preaching series
“They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might” (Psalm 145:11)

In this course we will cover some of the basics of the preparation and presentation of biblical lessons.

We will cover the following topics:

Extra class: An introduction to the privilege of speaking God’s word

    1. How to choose what to speak on.
    2. How to explore the passage for yourself.
    3. How to use other resources like commentaries.
    4. How to select your point.
    5. How to choose a structure for your lesson.
    6. How to start your lesson.
    7. How to end your lesson.
    8. How to make your lesson memorable.
    9. How to make the most of congregational involvement.
    10. How to prepare yourself to speak.

    11. Extra class: A summary of the course and suggestions for ongoing learning.

      Introduction
      • Most people think preaching and teaching is about competency, knowledge and an exemplary Christian walk.
      • It's about hunger, connection with God and compassion for people.
      • ““Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” (Jeremiah 23:29 NIV11)
      • “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10–11 NIV11)
      • “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV11)

        • He does not need the eloquent, but the willing.
        • He does not need the talented, but the humble.

          • Two things took me to where I am today (in addition to God’s patience!).
            • 1. Deep conviction that the most powerful thing we have is God’s word.
          • 2. People willing to give me a chance and train me.

          • Proceed on the assumption you are called to try to speak until someone tells you otherwise.

            • Question: Do you believe you can be effective in teaching and preaching God’s word?
            • Question: What would convince you either way?

              • Conclusion:
              • Truth through personality
              • God has no other method of bringing his truth to people (believers and nonbelievers) then through other people.
              • You have a great privilege. Make the most of it.

                • “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” (Psalm 145:4 NIV11)

David’s first encounter with the ark began in carelessness and ended in tragedy (1 Chron 13:11f.). Things are different now.  We can all sing!
