"Psalms of Ascent Series", Quiet Time Coaching: Episode 134, Psalm 121v3

You have found a daily podcast based on the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134).

They are designed to help our hearts and minds being a healthy place while the Covid 19 virus does its worst.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1–4 NIV11)

Each day we will meditate on a verse or two from these wonderful Psalms as we make our pilgrimage from confusion to hope, pain to peace, anxiety to joy.

An image rather like a mother watching over a vulnerable child - staying awake to protect him or her.

Main dangers to the traveller summarised as: i. step on loose stone and sprain ankle, ii. faint with sunstroke, iii. emotional illness due to moonstroke (lunacy).

  • 39: "Putting the lonely in families", Newsletter 28 March 2020, Episode 39
I received an email this week from a women's ministry director in Los Angeles. She asked me if I had any materials that might help people struggling with loneliness. I do not.

How do we practice physical distancing during this virus crisis without succumbing to a another disease - loneliness?

“God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing;” (Psalm 68:6 NIV11)I will produce a blog and recording on this topic next week, but here are some preliminary thoughts. Just a few bulIet points. I offer them with a request. The request is that you give me your feedback.

    1. You are not alone. You might feel alone, but you have companions - “Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” (John 14:23 NIV11)
    2. Use the technology available. Use what works for you, and don't feel you have to fit in with everyone else. Facebook, video, text, landline, skype ....
    3. Make a plan. Partner with other people to stay connected. Plan when to talk.
    4. Seek to support rather than be supported. Acknowledge your need - be real - but seek to listen more than you speak.
    5. Temporary - “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV11) You will see your friends again sooner or later.
    6. Birthdays. Being alone on your birthday might be one of the worst challenges. Remember your friends' birthdays and contact them.
    7. Jesus. He found strength from God when he was alone in the wilderness (Luke 4). You can find inspiration in his example.

      • I hope my posts this week will help you to enjoy God's companionship, and offer loneliness-busting support to others.

God bless, and stay safe, Malcolm

Each day we will meditate on a verse or two from these wonderful Psalms as we make our pilgrimage from confusion to hope, pain to peace, anxiety to joy.

Every journey is made on an earth where God is supreme.

God is available to help, 1 Cor 10:13, and we are to ask for the help we need, Matt 6:13.

God is YHWH five times in this little Psalm.  He is a personal God.

He is our ‘helper’ or ‘guardian’, ‘the one who guards’ 8 times in this Psalm.

The Psalmist’s thinking quickly jumps from the hills to what lies beyond them - the Maker of the universe. Setting our hearts & minds will help us keep the right perspective during the day, Col 3:1-3.

We are living through turbulent times. In place of tonight's usual Friday meeting, Tim, Shevvy and Malcolm share some thoughts on how to approach the situation we are experiencing.

After watching the lesson why not take some time to discuss with some friends its relevance to you?

        9. 197: Tuesday Teaching Tips, Episode 197: "Advice about audio for live online speakers"
After last night's location leaders call I had a few more thoughts about audio for those of us who will be speaking or leading singing for online live church services.

          1. Microphone.
            • Simple USB microphones are not very expensive but improve audio quality for your listeners significantly.
            • Years ago I used an earlier version of this microphone.  Any of the “Blue” range are pretty good.
            • If you are using a USB microphone which sits on your desk, bear in mind if you bang your desk it will be very audible. Ways around this include fixing it to your screen (as seen in the link above), or placing it on top of some absorbent material like a folded towel. That will absorb most knocking sounds.
            • The next level up is to put your USB microphone on a boom stand. My current setup is the Rode NT-USB Microphone, on a boom arm clamped to my desk.  Such a setup reduces the chances of disturbing sounds such as knocking one's desk. You could also mount it on a traditional microphone stand separate from your desk.
            • If your microphone does not come with a pop filter (see example here), I would strongly suggest getting one. It will reduce the plosives (P, D etc).
            • In addition, I would strongly suggest investing in a wind cover (see example here).  Although primarily intended for outdoor use, I find that the combination of pop filter and wind cover reduces the plosives significantly.
            • Headphones.
              • You’re better off using headphones than letting the audio come through your computer speakers.  That way you minimise the chances of feedback and muddy sound caused by someone the other side not having muted their mic.
              • My current setup is the Jabra Pro 930.  This is overkill for most people’s needs, but I use it as a dictation microphone as well as a headphone. I like it because it is light, and connected via Bluetooth (gets rid of a cable). You can use it as a microphone, but I wouldn’t use it for preaching if you have a USB microphone available. The sound quality on the USB mic is much better than the Jabra. The Jabra is fine for casual conversations and dictation.
              • Speaking via smartphone
                • To be honest, if you’re speaking, you really need to use a computer rather than your phone. You will find it much easier to speak into larger screen, and, assuming you are wired into your network directly, the signal will be more reliable and clear.
                • However, in some circumstances we may have to speak using our phones. All is not lost!
                • If you do use your phone, I suggest purchasing a good quality lavalier microphone (clip-on).
                • This Rode is good. I’ve used it many times. You will need an adapter for iPhone.
                • If you want top quality, then this Sennheiser is awesome.
                •  And if you want to be really sophisticated, consider going wireless.

                • One other thing - have a think about whether it’s better to sit or stand when you speak. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

                  1. Sitting: easier to have your Bible, notes and everything else to hand on the desk. But can tend to lose energy and slump in the chair.
                  2. Standing: easier to maintain energy levels. Need to be more disciplined about not moving out of camera shot.

                  3. In general, I find that standing is better when talking to a bigger group.

As you can imagine, there is a vast range of equipment and variety of setups.  If you have found something that works particularly well, please let me know.

It really is worth improving the sound quality. You might not notice it your end, but your listeners certainly will.  And the point, as we all know, is not just to speak well, but to be heard well. Otherwise there’s not much point!

                    God bless, Malcolm

When we are lost we should not look at the lightening that flashes, but at the road it illuminates.  Tragedy and difficulty may illuminate our true spiritual state, but we must not dwell on those issues, but instead on the way forward that the light has revealed.

There comes a time to reject the present situation, like Abram leaving Mesopotamia and Moses leaving Egypt.  This is more than a moving on, it is a rejection of what currently is, what surrounds us, what is normal.  This itself causes pain, but it is worth it.  We never fully arrive on this earth, but we are going somewhere better (like the pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem).

                  5. 38: "Washing with the Word", Newsletter 22 March 2020. Episode 38
My guess is that this week has seemed just as surreal to you as to me. Not only have I never experienced anything quite like this in my life, I never expected to.

We had our first online gathering for the men of the Watford church on Wednesday. Today we followed that up with our first online Sunday service with about 16 or 17 households participating.  Plenty of teething problems to sort out regarding technology and practicalities, but it was so very good to hear from one another and see each other's faces. The sermon can be found by clicking here.

The kids were especially cute and did some beautiful drawings!

I'm very glad that we are working through the Psalms of Ascent - journeying together through rough territory with our ultimate destiny being the "holy city".

I will not write more today. There is so much already online about these issues. What I would like to emphasise is the significance of not believing Satan's lies that God is absent, distant or uncaring. He is right in the midst of this mess. He is with us, listening to us, offering us strength, compassion and wisdom. Never doubt his loving comforting presence is available to you.

I hope my posts this week will help you to not only wash your hands, but wash your hearts and minds with our heavenly Father's Word.

God bless, and stay safe, Malcolm
