Big News 

Join us to commemorate Juneteenth with a reflective and joyful flag raising and program from 11:00am-12:30pm, to be followed by activities, games, artist vendors and a free community cookout until 3pm!  This will all be taking place at Lincoln Common which is at the corner of Cross and Bryant Streets.  
 
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. On Juneteenth we honor the history, legacy, and culture of our African American and Black community members. 

This will mark the fourth year that the Juneteenth flag has flown over Malden. All public schools, fire stations, the Senior Community Center, and the Malden Police Department will also fly the Juneteenth flag

• Malden will celebrate a Pride Festival on Saturday, June 18th 11am-5pm at Coytemore Lea Park which is located across from the Malden Post Office. 
• Next, MaldenArts invites members of the public on Wednesday, June 15th at 6 PM to the unveiling of the Malden COVID Memorial Park, a pocket park and mural honoring both those who lost their lives and those who helped residents through the pandemic. 
• The City of Malden is preparing an updated draft Hazard Mitigation Plan to reduce the city’s vulnerability to natural hazards such as flooding, droughts, hurricanes, and blizzards, and increase the city’s resilience to the impacts of climate change. This Hazard Mitigation Meeting on Wednesday, June 15th 4PM-6PM at Malden City Hall and on Zoom. 
• A Public Hearing will be held by the Malden City Council on June 14, 2022 at 6:00 P.M. for the purpose of getting public input for the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 Budget. Public meetings this week include Mystic Valley Development Commission, Energy Efficiency, Mystic Valley Regional Charter School Board, Future of Maplewood Square Committee, Malden Housing Board of Commissioners, Public Works Commission, Liquor License Committee, City Council Public Hearing for the Budget, City Council Committees, Malden Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Board of Health, Community Preservation Committee and Board of Appeal

• Are you looking for healthy and active things to do for you or your child?  Have you checked out the Malden Recreation Department’s many affordable activities?  Just visit www.maldenrec.com and browse all their activities.   

Pro Tip 

• Does your property have lead water lines?  You may have heard about how Malden is rebuilding its water infrastructure by replacing our aging water lines which in some cases have lead pipes.    This can also be true of the pipes that are owned by the homeowner which is the small section of pipe that runs from the sidewalk to the home.  In either case, you are going to want to know what the status is and what are your options.

Big News 

On Monday, June 6, community health system Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) will open the Teen Health Center at Malden High School. The launch of the center follows years of collaboration and partnership between CHA, the Tufts University Family Medicine Residency at CHA, and the City of Malden to offer an innovative model for delivering teen-centered primary care services during school hours that will remove barriers to care for students ages 12 - 24.

• Have you heard of Malden PorchFest? This Saturday, June 11th over 40 musical performances will take place around the City in a celebration of music and community! Visit www.maldenporchfest.com for a list of performers, locations and times. 
• Murder at The Malden Bank Pub Crawl June 11th from 5-8PM.  This is a one-of-a-kind Mystery Pub Crawl in downtown Malden inspired by the historical 1863 murder at Malden Bank, and celebrating the book Abel Bodied: Murder at the Malden Bank written by Malden native Michael Cloherty who will be at the final location to sign and sell his novel. 
• Please join the Mayor’s Office in Partnership with the Malden City Council for the raising of the progressive Pride Flag on Tuesday, June 7th at 7PM at City Hall Plaza. 
• National Grid Public Hearing on the release of Hazardous materials.  This Wednesday, June 8th from 5:30 to 7PM at Malden City Hall or on Zoom.

• Mayor Christenson is reaching out to residents who might be interested in serving on the Cultural Council. 
• The City of Malden will hold a dedication event formally naming the City Hall Roof Deck at 215 Pleasant Street in honor of Kenneth V. Desmond. The public is invited to celebrate the event on Thursday, June 9th from 3:30-5 PM. In 1967 Ken Desmond was the first Black person to be elected to the Malden School Committee. If the name sounds familiar, Kenneth’s son Kenneth Desmond Jr. Is an Associate Justice with the Mass Appeals Court.

• We have been repaving miles upon miles of road in Malden but with over 350 streets in Malden, there is bound to be some rough patches.  We make it easy for you to report potholes. Just use our resident reporting app known as SeeClickFix which you can download as an app or just visit seeclickfix.com.  

Big News 

• We know it can sometimes be tough to get all of your trash and recycling into your carts and in order for our program to be the most effective for reducing litter, we strive to have everything contained in carts.  For overflow, we do offer the purchase of our carts for $40 each which depending on where you might purchase one in a retail box store, is about half the price.  Well, to incentivize our residents, we are cutting the price of carts to $20 per cart!  This is a really inexpensive price and will only be available while supplies last so act quickly by visiting cityofmalden.org/trash

• Malden High School Class of 1988 invites you to the rededication of the Malden City Seal to honor Class Vice Principal Mr. John R. Benotti.  This will be at the intersection of Ferry and Salem at 11AM. 
• Malden Public Library hosts a 90 minute workshop on Genealogy.  The event will be on June 6th at 6:30PM and you can sign up at Maldenpubliclibrary.org 
• The second in our series of Summer festivals will take place on Saturday, June 4th 12-4PM in downtown Malden.  
• virtual public meeting for the Malden Transit Action Plan will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 6:30-8pm. 
  The City of Malden is undertaking a Transit Action Plan to create a community-based vision for the next 10-15 years on how to prioritize investment in the Malden multimodal transportation network. As a resident, employee, or somebody who passes through Malden using public transportation, your feedback is essential and a key ingredient in our recipe for success!  
• Graduations: Malden High School Sunday, June 5th at 2PM. Other graduations held.  Malden Catholic had their commencement on Saturday, May 21st which included the first ever class of Girls!  Other graduations are Northeast Metro Tech on Friday, June 3rd and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School on Friday, June 10th .  Congrats to the class of 22!

• When summer heat rises and in particular if there is a heat wave, our Emergency Management Team will make available a cooling center if our residents do not have sufficient cooling. You can monitor these cooling center opening announcements at cityofmalden.org. 

Pro Tip 

• Speaking of trash and recycling, did you know that we have a way for you to search how to get rid of just about any type of material.  As you know not everything you need to get rid of can easily be thrown away or recycled.  There are hazardous materials, hard to recycle items, bulk items and many more materials that you just may not know how to dispose of.  Just visit our Waste Wizard tool at cityofmalden.org/waste and search for just about any material and we will tell you how to safely and responsibly dispose of it.

• Memorial Day Parade is returning to Malden!  On Memorial Monday, May 30th.  The Parade will kick off at 10 AM City Hall on Pleasant Street.
• Shoutout to two Malden legends. Tom Arria retires and Barbara Tolstrup gets a lifetime achievement award at Forestdale Park. If you see them, be sure and congratulate them.

• There will be a celebration of Eratrian Independence Day on Tuesday, May 24th at 85 Dartmouth Street. 

Press Releases 

• Malden’s own Keith Knight world renowned artist and Malden native was in town Sunday to dedicate his a mural he created for Malden’s Artline called "Life's Little Victories" .  This is located on the bike path near the Breakfast Club formerly the Do Wop Diner. 
• The Phantom Gourmet was in town highlighting some of our great restaurants.  There are several Malden restaurants that are participating in the festival but there were some that just couldn’t participate due to reasons like staffing, timing, and whatnot.  So they offered up a great way to help promote these restaurants by doing a Facebook Live on their FB page which has nearly a million followers.   
   
  Along those lines, look out on UMA our public access station or on the City’s Youtube channel for a behind the scenes look at how the festival came to be.  I was able to sit down with the festival organizers to get a behind the scenes look at how something this massive comes to be. 
• In May we are celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we’ve been running something on our Facebook account at facebook.com/cityofmalden highlighting various members of our community.  

Business 

• Malden is known as the gaming district and that is for good reason.  More and more businesses are popping up in Malden know as experiential retail and they are helping bring the Malden Gaming District notoriety around Boston. The latest along these lines will be having it s grand opening this Wednesday, May 25th and this Project Putt. 61 located at Exchange St. and is touted as the Wildest Round of Minigolf around.  I kind of like If Pink Floyd and Daft Punk retired and opened a mini golf course.  Don’t look it up on TikTok or Youtube, experience it!  More at www.projectputt.com

• We will be repaving a portion of Fellsmere Road on Tuesday, May 24th.   

Health 

• Cut the grass, cuts down the critters.  It’s a fact that a well maintained lawn can reduce the amount of critters including rodents will want to spend time hanging out on your property.  Aside from being a city ordinance required to maintain your property, it is also something that increases the curb appeal of your neighborhood!

This week’s pro tip is about boards and commission meetings.  The City has over 50 boards and commissions on our website where we track meetings, agendas and minutes for. We know not everyone is interested in all things but you may be very interested in just a few.  You can sign up for alerts when a an agenda or minutes are posted by visiting cityofmalden.org/notifyme  Again just choose what interests you most and sign up. 

Announcements 

• Our big announcement this week is that we will officially kick off our 2022 Festival Season with two festivals right out of the gate.  There will by our Multicultural Festival on Friday, May 20th at Malden High School from 3:30-7PM and the May-plewood Festival this Saturday, May 21st 12-4PM right in Maplewood Square. • Mayor Christenson recently submitted his Fiscal Year 2023 Proposed budget.  All are invited to view the details at cityofmalden.org/budget.

• As always, there are a variety of Boards and Commissions meetings happening throughout the week, be sure to follow along.
• On Wednesday, May 18th, The Community Preservation Committee will be holding their monthly meeting which will include a workshop for the public to find out more about how to submit a CPC Grant Application.  This is a Zoom based event and details can be found on our website. The CPC accepts proposals for projects related to affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space and recreation. 
• We also want to remind our residents of two significant things about the Month of May.  First, we are celebrating Mental Health Awareness Month in May.  The City is “lighting it green” by lighting the Jefferson Apartment Group pedestrian bridge green for the month of May.  May is also Proclaimed by Mayor Christenson to be Jewish American Heritage Month in the City of Malden.  Malden has a long proud history of a thriving Jewish community and we are proud to celebrate this month.

• Quick note that our Memorial Day Parade will be returning for the first time since prior to Covid taking place on Memorial Day Monday, May 30th.  More info to come on that in future episodes. 
• If you have a few hours available to volunteer and assist in placing flags at veterans’ graves, please call the Veterans’ Services Department at 781-397-7139 and provide your name, cell phone number and the dates and times that you are available.  We are looking for volunteers for the following dates/times.  
• The City of Malden is pleased to announce it has been selected to participate in the 2022-2024 Community First Partnership offered by the Sponsors of Mass Save to increase energy efficiency in homes and businesses. Residents, small businesses, houses of worship, and local nonprofits interested in participating can request a no-cost energy assessment at www.masssave.com/malden or by calling (781) 536-7773. 
   

Roadwork 

Mayor Christenson, working with various departments is kicking off what will be dozens of road projects to improve our City streets as well as our water infrastructure by replacing lead pipes and repairing miles of road.  You can sign up for alerts at cityofmalden.org/alerts 

Health
