FEATURING INDIA WALTON & FATIMA IQBAL-ZUBAIR - It’s been a week since New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic nomination for New York City Mayor, beating out the billionaire-backed former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani’s complex and intersecting heritage –he is an Indian Ugandan Muslim immigrant– coupled with his self-identification as a democratic socialist, has both, establishment Democrats, and Trumpian Republicans up in arms. 

Already Mamdani has received death threats and open calls for his deportation–all because he wants to increase taxes on New York City’s millionaires to pay for free buses and childcare, and enact rent freezes and municipal grocery stores. 

There are independent candidates like Mamdani who have come before him, and others who are coming after him - today we’ll bring on both to analyze his winning vision, how he can face the reactionary assault in November, and how his primary win paves the way for others.
