Professor Cliff Bowman, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Strategic Management at Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University (UK). What is value in strategic management? How is it created and who captures it? In this conversation, we examine the distinction between use value and exchange value, the processes of value creation and capture, and the limits of conventional approaches to strategy. We then explore the liberating power of complexity thinking as well as the fundamental challenges it poses to conventional assumptions about predictability and control. Cliff then brings these ideas together in a intellectually coherent and practical account of how firms work. The last part of our conversation examines the implications of this view for some of management's most difficult questions, including executive compensation, technology, organisational design, growth and scale.
