How do you accidentally become a close personal friend and student of both Dan Inosanto and Rickson Gracie? Paul Vunak is a legend in the martial arts, a man that many feel is the true successor of Bruce Lee, a former hand-to-hand combat instructor for SEAL Team Six, and holder of more accolades than it bears to mention.

He is the founder and head of the Progressive Fighting Systems and he has been the key component to bringing Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do into today's real world of combat. He has bridged the gap on how to break down the "MMA Matrix" with traditional arts of Wing Chun (specifically trapping), the destructive combat proven art of Filipino Kali, the power and finesse of boxing and Muay Thai, the ground equalizer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the Filipino art of Kino Mutai and the core of the R.A.T. program - headbutts, knees and elbows.

Luis Gutierrez is the Founder and CEO of ISR Matrix. He is a lifelong martial artist who has made a career of excelling as an instructor and coach with children, adults, law enforcement and military personnel as a gym owner and contractor. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu Black Belt, former SBG Vice President and owned and operated One Dragon Martial Arts/ Soflo Jiujitsu for 20 years before being hired by the Seminole Tribe of Florida to create and develop Big Cypress Martial Arts as its Head Coach and Program Director for ten years.

Luis has worked extensively with state and federal law enforcement throughout his career and began working as a contractor in 2005. He has travelled worldwide teaching and training LEO, SWAT, Executive Protection professionals and military special teams specializing primarily in apprehension and evasion while developing his own company’s Instructor Cadre and administrative board of consultants and directors.

Daz Norton is the founder of Fendo UK (Integrated Defence Systems). Living a lifestyle of Combat Arts spaning almost 3 decades in the UK, Daz started training in as many styles and systems as he possibly could. However, it wasn't until working in front line Security (Store Detective, Security Management and Consulting, Bouncer, Close Protection) as well as working for Law enforcement in roles as a Police Officer and Custody Officer that he came to deal with serious violence on a daily basis.

With the understanding of how to deal with aggressors, violence and survive high risk situations and environments, Daz developed his training methods based on pressure testing all techniques, concepts and drills to see what adaptions are needed to function in REAL situations. Daz continues to develop standards of training for professionals and civilians ensuring that everything taught and trained is relevant to the end users needs.

Drawing on his life’s experience growing up in government housing, his decades of training martial arts, and his academic background — he codified his experiences into what is today known as the Crazy Monkey Defense System.

Rodney earned his Doctorate from the University of Leicester’s School of Business. His thesis and research focused on the embodied aspect of Mindful-Leadership. Key to his research was studying the efficacy of mindfulness first taught through an experiential, action oriented approach, and its subsequent application to leadership performance. In addition, he earned his Master of Arts degree in Leading Innovation and Change from York St John Universities School of Business. His undergraduate work was in psychology.

In the past two decades Rodney has worked closely with army special forces teams – helping them develop inner-fitness capabilities and defensive tactics skills for life and death encounters. He has instructed law enforcement officers both in the United States, Canada, Australia and Germany on how to protect themselves when all else fails. He regularly teaches cabin crew how to deal with unruly passengers 30 000 feet in the air. On top of that, he continues to teach seminars around the world on the two modern martial arts lifestyle brands he created (now taught in 15-countries around the world). And if this wasn’t enough, he is often asked to guest lecture or be a keynote speaker on topics ranging from embodied-leadership, mindfulness-in-action, to entrepreneurial success.

Do you know how to spot a potential threat or person of interest in a crowd? Do you know how to explain to a fellow civilian or potentially an emergency dispatcher why something "just doesn't look right"? That's exactly what we're talking about in this episode of the Managing Violence Podcast with Dr Nate Meehan.

Dr. Meehan led the JDLR Project research team while he was a Social Scientist at the United States Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL) Adversarial Modeling Exploitation Office. At the NRL, he also successfully managed a variety of short- and long-term projects for the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security on topics ranging from crime analysis to the development of web-based research platforms for visual search. He earned his Ph.D. at the School of Criminal Justice at the State University of New York Albany. Dr. Meehan is also a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst and worked as the Lead Crime and Intelligence Analyst. As an analyst, he also assisted on an FBI Operation Safe Streets (OSS) Taskforce targeting violent gang members. Dr. Meehan has also instructed a variety of online and traditional undergraduate college course for SUNY Albany, Excelsior College, and the University of Maryland Center for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

As Director of Research and Development for Second Sight Training Systems, Dr. Meehan is responsible for developing and implementing course content, evaluation of existing course techniques and processes, the development of new training materials, and the transition of that research into practice.
