Origins and Rise of the Ashʿarī Creed, a lecture by Shaykh Abu Khadeejah Abdul-Wahid (hafidhahullāh), at the Manchester Summer Conference 2019

• The Ashʿarī creed traced back to Ibn Kullāb (d. 240H), a contemporary of Imām Aḥmad (d. 241H); the majority of Muslims today are upon this creed

• The Companions never differed in ʿaqīdah or the foundations of the religion

• Abul-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī (d. 329H) was a Muʿtazilī until the age of 40, then adopted the ideology of the Kullābiyyah

• Jahm ibn Ṣafwān and Jaʿd ibn Dirham, predecessors of Ibn Kullāb, were so extreme that they were executed

• Al-Ashʿarī later studied with the Ḥanbalīs, repented and returned to the Sunnah, the belief he died upon

• The Ashʿarīs take his earlier Kullābī belief, and even the original ideas of the Muʿtazilah and Jahmiyyah that Ibn Kullāb refuted
