Mandy Marquardt: Road to Olympics with Type 1 Diabetes

South Florida native and Olympic hopeful, Mandy Marquardt, talks to Cycle Series about training to make the U.S. Olympic Track Cycling team for Tokyo 2020, which has been pushed back to July 2021 because of the pandemic. Mandy started riding on the velodrome at Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City, Florida at 10 years old. But at 16, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and was told by doctors she could not compete at a high level anymore. That didn’t stop Mandy. And now she is an advocate for Type 1 diabetes awareness and currently riding for Team Novo Nordisk, which is a team made up of athletes who all have Type 1 diabetes. These athletes are proving it’s not the end of the road for competitive athletes who are diagnosed with the disease.
