"The first inducement to attain this second purification is a keen and lively apprehension of the great evils resulting from sin, by means of which we acquire a deep, hearty contrition. Part I, Ch 5: The First Step must be Purifying the Soul.

"The flowers appear on the earth," says the Heavenly Bridegroom, and the time for pruning and cutting is come. And what, my child, are our hearts’ flowers save our good desires? Now, so soon as these begin to appear, we need the pruning-hook to cut off all dead and superfluous works from our conscience. When the daughter of a strange land was about to espouse an Israelite, the law commanded her to put off the garment of her captivity, to pare her nails, and to shave her head; 16 even so the soul which aims at the dignity of becoming the spouse of Christ, must put off the old man, and put on the new man, forsaking sin: moreover, it must pare and shave away every impediment which can hinder the Love of God. The very first step towards spiritual health is to be purged from our sinful humours."

Sermon for the First Sunday after Epiphany: "Malice of Mortal Sin".

"Most holy Mary lost her Son for three days: during that time she wept continually for having lost sight of Jesus, and did not cease to seek after him till she found him. How then does it happen that so many sinners not only lose sight of Jesus, but even lose his divine grace; and instead of weeping for so great a loss, sleep in peace, and make no effort to recover so great a blessing? This arises from their not feeling what it is to lose God by sin. Some say: I commit this sin, not to lose God, but to enjoy this pleasure, to possess the property of another, or to take revenge of an enemy. They who speak such language show that they do not understand the malice of mortal sin. What is mortal sin?

Sermon for the First Sunday after Epiphany: "The Mission of the Word of God for Procrastinating Sinners"

"As our Lord Jesus Christ, when he wished to show his unheard of love to men, could not wait for the time of his bitter Passion and death, to shed his Saving Blood for them, but already as an Infant, eight days old, poured out the first drops of that precious Blood in the Circumcision, so, he would not wait for the time of his public mission to instruct and convert men, but commenced his office of Preacher in the twelfth year of his age, when he was found amongst the doctors in the temple, explaining the law to them by question and answer. Ah! If we had only the happiness of once hearing, as they did, the word of life from his own sacred lips, what an effect would it not have on our hearts! But what am I saying? Although it is now nearly two thousand years since he appeared in the world in visible form, he still preaches his divine word and explains his law by the mouths of priests. Alas! I should rather exclaim, would that all Christians were diligent enough in hearing his word. Then, indeed, would Christ reap a golden harvest.
