Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night of His betrayal, established the sacrament of the altar, giving us His body and blood under the forms of bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins. This sacrament, as simple and profound as it is, embodies the entirety of our faith: to take Jesus at His word. When He commands us to eat and drink, He offers not just bread and wine, but His very body and blood, promising life and salvation through the forgiveness of sins. This truth, affirmed by the small catechism, underscores the sacrament's dual purpose: to unite us with Christ and to assure us of the forgiveness He won on the cross. As we partake in Holy Communion, we are reminded of the straightforward and profound love Jesus demonstrated throughout His life and ultimately through His sacrifice, a love that calls us to simply believe and receive the gifts He so freely offers.
