God’s Word Must Be Obeyed Completely — 1 Kings 13

First Kings 13 gives a serious warning about obedience, compromise, and the authority of God’s Word. As Jeroboam continues leading the northern kingdom into false worship, God sends an unnamed man of God from Judah to confront him. Through fulfilled prophecy, judgment, and the miraculous restoration of Jeroboam’s hand, God demonstrates His power and authority. Yet despite what he witnesses, Jeroboam refuses to repent.

The man of God initially stands faithfully upon God’s command, refusing Jeroboam’s invitation and reward. But when an old prophet claims to have received a different message from God, he allows another religious voice to override what God had already clearly commanded. His decision ultimately costs him his life.

This message reminds us that partial obedience is still disobedience. Neither the approval of the world nor the words of a respected religious figure should take precedence over the clear teaching of Scripture. Religious appearances, experiences, and credentials are never substitutes for truth.

God’s people must know the Bible, stand upon its authority, recognize compromise, and faithfully obey what the Lord has said.

The Temptation of Jesus in the Wilderness — Luke 4:1–13

In Luke 4:1–13, Jesus enters the wilderness full of the Holy Ghost and faces direct temptation from Satan. Through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, Satan attempts to persuade Jesus to act contrary to the will of God. Each time, Jesus responds with the authority of Scripture: “It is written.”

This message examines what Christ’s temptation teaches us about the spiritual battles believers face today. Temptation itself is not sin, but we must be prepared to recognize Satan’s deception and refuse to yield to it. Satan may even misuse Scripture or make sin appear attractive, which is why Christians need to know the Word of God and remain yielded to the Holy Spirit.

The message also emphasizes the urgency of the Gospel. Life is uncertain, and believers should take the opportunities God gives them to share Christ with others. Whether through a conversation, an invitation to church, or a Gospel tract, even a simple encounter can become an opportunity to point someone to Jesus.

When temptation comes, our defense remains the same: draw near to God, resist the devil, and stand upon the authority of His Word.

In this Wednesday night Bible study from 1 Kings 12, we examine the division of Israel under Rehoboam and the devastating consequences of pride, fear, and rejecting godly counsel.

After Solomon’s death, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked him to lighten the heavy burdens that Solomon had placed upon them. Rehoboam first consulted the older men who had advised his father. They encouraged him to serve the people, speak kindly to them, and respond with humility.

Instead of accepting their wise counsel, Rehoboam turned to the younger men with whom he had grown up. Their advice appealed to his pride. They encouraged him to answer harshly and increase the people’s burdens. Rehoboam chose the counsel that made him appear stronger rather than the counsel that reflected wisdom, compassion, and servant leadership.

His arrogant response divided the kingdom. Ten tribes rejected the house of David and followed Jeroboam, while Rehoboam retained authority over Judah and Benjamin. One proud decision produced consequences that affected generations.

The account reminds us that seeking advice is not enough. We must be willing to receive wise, biblical counsel, especially when it challenges our preferences. Pride often searches for someone who will approve what we have already decided to do.

Although the division of the kingdom fulfilled what God had previously declared, Rehoboam remained responsible for his choices. God’s foreknowledge and sovereignty do not remove human responsibility.

When Rehoboam prepared to fight against the northern tribes, God commanded him not to go to war against his brethren. This time, Rehoboam obeyed. His obedience prevented further bloodshed and demonstrates that even after a serious failure, the right response is to submit to God’s Word.

Jeroboam then allowed fear to control his decisions. He worried that if the people continued worshiping in Jerusalem, their loyalty would return to Rehoboam. Instead of trusting God, he created an alternative system of worship.

Jeroboam made golden calves, established unauthorized places of worship, appointed priests who were not of the tribe of Levi, and devised religious observances from his own heart. His false worship was convenient and politically useful, but it was contrary to God’s commands and became a snare to Israel.

This chapter presents two leaders with similar heart problems. Rehoboam was ruled by pride, and Jeroboam was ruled by fear. Both rejected God’s wisdom, and both harmed the people they were responsible to lead.

The lesson challenges us to examine whose counsel we follow, whether pride or fear is controlling our decisions, and whether our worship and service are directed by Scripture or by personal preference.

During this special service featuring the Pensacola Christian College Proclaim Ministry Team, the music and testimonies directed our attention toward the gospel, the finished work of Christ, the faithfulness of God’s Word, and the believer’s eternal hope in Heaven.

The sermon from James 1 focused on how God can turn trials into triumphs when believers approach them biblically.

The message began with the illustration of a finely crafted guitar. Before wood can become a beautiful instrument, it must be cut, stripped, shaped, heated, bent, sanded, and drilled. If the trees could understand only the painful process, they might believe they were being destroyed. The craftsman, however, sees the finished product.

In the same way, believers often see only the difficulty of a trial, while God sees what He is shaping them to become. He is the Master Craftsman and knows precisely what He is doing.

James gives four ways to approach trials.

First, approach trials with joy. James says, “Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.” Trials are not merely possible; they are inevitable. Christian joy does not depend upon favorable circumstances. It is rooted in Jesus Christ and His finished work.

Second, approach trials with patience. The trying of faith produces patience. We may not understand why God permits a particular trial, but we can trust that He has a purpose. Trials are not intended merely to hurt us; God uses them to develop spiritual maturity and teach us to depend upon Him.

Third, approach trials with prayer. When we lack wisdom, God invites us to ask. Instead of praying only for the trial to end, we should ask God for wisdom to respond correctly. He gives generously and does not shame His children for coming to Him. We must ask in faith rather than continually wavering between trusting God and trusting ourselves.

Fourth, approach trials with perseverance. James promises blessing to those who endure. Believers can remain faithful because present suffering is temporary and eternal glory is ahead. One day, every trial will be over, and those who know Christ will worship before His throne.

The account of Horatio Spafford illustrated this truth. After experiencing extraordinary loss, he wrote the hymn “It Is Well with My Soul.” His peace was not based upon his circumstances but upon his confidence in Christ.

God is greater than every trial, and He desires to help His children through each one. Through joy, patience, prayer, and perseverance, believers can leave a trial stronger than when they entered it.

In this Sunday School lesson from Luke 3, we examine the ministry of John the Baptist and his message of repentance. John was sent by God to prepare the way for Jesus Christ, calling people to turn from sin and demonstrate the reality of that repentance through changed lives.

The phrase “the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” does not teach that baptism saves. Water baptism cannot forgive sin or produce salvation. Rather, John’s baptism was a public testimony that a person had repented and was turning toward God.

True repentance is more than feeling sorry. It is a change of mind that results in a change of direction. When God transforms a person inwardly, there should eventually be visible evidence outwardly. As a tree is known by its fruit, genuine repentance is revealed through changes in conduct, desires, priorities, and relationships.

John challenged the people not to depend upon their religious heritage. Being descended from Abraham did not guarantee salvation, just as growing up in a Christian home, attending church, or belonging to a Baptist family cannot save anyone today. Every individual must personally repent and trust God.

John also gave practical examples of the fruit of repentance. Those with abundance should become generous. Publicans should conduct themselves honestly. Soldiers should avoid violence, false accusations, and discontentment. These actions did not earn salvation; they demonstrated that an inward change had occurred.

The lesson also explains the biblical order of salvation, baptism, church membership, and Christian service. John possessed direct authority from God to baptize. Following the establishment and commissioning of the New Testament church, the responsibility to administer baptism belongs to the local church.

The local church belongs to Jesus Christ, not to any pastor, deacon, family, or individual member. Pastors and deacons serve in distinct offices but remain accountable within the church. Church members therefore share a responsibility to protect sound doctrine and carefully evaluate future leaders according to Scripture and the church’s doctrinal convictions.

The central truth is clear: baptism does not save, but those who have truly repented should follow God in scriptural baptism and bring forth fruit that reflects a changed heart.

As America marks 250 years of independence, this message examines what God’s Word says about the true foundation of freedom. While we are thankful for our nation’s many blessings, Scripture reminds us that lasting liberty is found only when people and nations acknowledge the Lord.

The Ministry of Jesus Begins

In this Sunday School lesson, we begin exploring the opening chapters of the Gospel of Luke and discover that the birth of Jesus was far more than a historical event—it marked the beginning of God’s plan of redemption being revealed to the world.

From Caesar’s decree to the manger in Bethlehem, every detail demonstrates God’s sovereign control over history and His faithfulness to fulfill every promise He has made.

The Tragic Turning of Solomon’s Heart

Scripture: 1 Kings 11

King Solomon’s reign began with extraordinary wisdom, unmatched prosperity, and God’s abundant blessing. Yet 1 Kings 11 records one of the saddest chapters in Israel’s history—the gradual turning of Solomon’s heart away from the Lord.

Despite God’s clear commands, Solomon multiplied wives from pagan nations, and over time they turned his heart toward false gods. What began as compromise eventually became open disobedience. Solomon built places of worship for idols and no longer followed the Lord with a whole heart.

This chapter reminds us that spiritual decline rarely happens all at once. It often begins with small compromises that slowly pull us away from God. Solomon had every advantage imaginable, yet even great wisdom could not protect a heart that refused to obey God’s Word.

As a result of Solomon’s rebellion, God’s judgment came upon the kingdom. Although God honored His covenant with David by delaying the full consequences, He declared that the kingdom would be divided after Solomon’s death. God also raised up adversaries against Solomon, demonstrating that when His protective blessing is withdrawn, trouble quickly follows.

The sermon also examines the pagan gods Ashtoreth, Chemosh, and Molech, highlighting the tragic influence of idolatry and the terrible practices associated with these false religions. Solomon’s willingness to tolerate and promote idol worship reveals just how far his heart had drifted from the Lord.

Throughout the message, we are reminded that sin is never isolated. Our decisions affect our families, churches, and future generations. Solomon’s personal compromise eventually impacted an entire nation.

Yet the chapter also points us toward hope. David sinned greatly but repented and returned to God. The difference between David and Solomon was not that one was perfect and the other was not—it was that David possessed a repentant heart. God continues to extend mercy to those who humble themselves, confess their sin, and turn back to Him.

In this Father’s Day message, we are reminded that Father’s Day should not only be a time to recognize fathers, but also a time to awaken men to their God-given responsibilities.

The main text comes from Ephesians 6:1–4, with the emphasis on verse 4: “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

A responsible, godly father is not perfect, but he is committed to loving God, leading his family, and raising his children according to the Word of God. The message reminds us that a man may be a good or responsible father without being saved, but he will be a better father if he knows the Lord Jesus Christ.

The first truth is that a godly father loves God first. Deuteronomy 6:5–7 teaches that God’s words should be in the heart and taught diligently to the children. Before a father can lead his family spiritually, he must personally walk with God. Children learn more from what they see than from what they hear, so a father’s prayer life, Bible reading, faithfulness to church, and genuine love for God should be visible in the home.

The second truth is that a godly father leads his family spiritually. Joshua 24:15 says, “but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” God has given fathers the responsibility of spiritual leadership, not through harsh control, but through servant leadership, biblical wisdom, prayer, example, and godly character.

The third truth is that a godly father loves his children sacrificially. Psalm 103:13 shows the compassion of a father toward his children. Children need more than provision. They need affection, encouragement, attention, and the presence of their father. Many children spell love as T-I-M-E.

The fourth truth is that a godly father provides for his family responsibly. I Timothy 5:8 teaches that a man should provide for his own household. This includes physical needs, but also emotional, moral, and spiritual stability. Responsible provision means working diligently, managing resources wisely, creating a stable home, and teaching good stewardship.

The fifth truth is that a godly father disciplines with love. Proverbs 22:6 says to “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Biblical discipline is not punishment driven by anger, but loving correction that teaches right, wrong, wisdom, and responsibility. A godly father sets boundaries, corrects consistently, and balances truth with grace.

The sixth truth is that a godly father demonstrates integrity. Proverbs 20:7 says, “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” Children quickly recognize hypocrisy. A father’s character leaves a lasting mark. Integrity means keeping your word, being honest, admitting when you are wrong, seeking forgiveness, and walking humbly before God.

The seventh truth is that a godly father leaves a godly legacy. The goal of fatherhood is not merely to raise successful children, but to raise children who know and follow God. Money, possessions, and achievements will fade, but a spiritual legacy can impact children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

This message closes with a challenge for fathers to examine the legacy they are building. May every father seek to be able to leave behind this testimony: “My father loved God. My father loved us. My father was faithful to lead our family in the ways of the Lord.”

May God help fathers to be faithful, responsible, godly men who love Him, lead their families, and raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

In this message, we are reminded that biblical missions are not man-made, organization-driven, or personality-centered. They are church-sent, Spirit-led, Scripture-grounded, and God-glorifying.

The main text comes from Acts 13:1–4, where the Holy Ghost called Barnabas and Saul for the work of missions, and the church at Antioch fasted, prayed, laid hands on them, and sent them away. This passage gives us the biblical pattern for missionary work: the Holy Ghost calls, the church prays, the church sends, and the missionary goes.

The first truth is that the church must send. Romans 10:15 asks, “And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” Biblical missions are carried out through the authority and accountability of the local New Testament church. The missionary does not go alone. He goes with the prayers, support, encouragement, and accountability of a sending church. Missions are not merely a line item in a church budget. They are a sacred act of obedience.

The second truth is that the harvest is real. Jesus said in John 4:35, “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” The need for the Gospel is urgent. Though many places may seem spiritually cold or secular, people are still hungry for truth. The message included reports from Denmark, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and other mission works where God is opening doors, saving souls, strengthening believers, and planting churches.

The preacher shared how the Lord is working in Europe, including a testimony of a young man named Lazarus who trusted Christ in Barcelona. His story was a reminder that those who are spiritually dead can be made alive through the Lord Jesus Christ. The message also challenged believers to pray more specifically for missionaries, families, open hearts, Gospel opportunities, and laborers for the harvest.

The third truth is that the partnership is eternal. Philippians 1:3–5 and Philippians 4:15–17 show the relationship between Paul and the Philippian church. Paul thanked them for their “fellowship in the gospel” and reminded them that their giving resulted in fruit abounding to their account. A church that supports missions is not a spectator. It is a participant in the harvest.

Mission giving is not charity. It is an eternal investment. The return is measured in souls saved, lives changed, churches planted, believers strengthened, and Christ proclaimed where He was not known before.

This message closes with a challenge to never stop sending, never stop praying, never stop giving, and never stop caring about souls. God has opened doors of faith among the nations, and the local church has the privilege and responsibility to walk through those doors in obedience to the Great Commission.
