PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON FILMOGRAPHY MARATHON
The first PTA film set outside of L.A., this journey puts us in a new location, and on a new path for the director. Quiet, slow, serious and mature.
Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister Cyril are at the center of British fashion in 1950s London. Women come and go in Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship. His carefully tailored existence soon gets disrupted by Alma, a young and strong-willed woman who becomes his muse and lover.
Kane and Rhys enter a more elevated lifestyle, escaping the chaos of the 70s adult film industry, or American Western oil-rush, and instead explore something with a bit of... order.

Stoned. Confused. Obsessed with television.
This is not a description of the show's hosts, but instead the film they are tackling today; the dark sheep of PTA's filmography.
In a California beach community, private detective Larry "Doc" Sportello tends to work his cases through a smoky haze of marijuana. One day, Shasta, a former lover, arrives out of the blue to plead for Doc's help; it seems that Shasta's current beau, rich real-estate tycoon Mickey Wolfmann, has a wife who may be plotting to commit him to a mental hospital. When Mickey and Shasta both disappear, Doc navigates a psychedelic world of surfers, stoners and cops to solve the case.
Rhys and Kane make their way one of the strangest of the director's films, one that feels almost a bit displaced. While trying to fill in the gaps, the boys figure out that maybe they're not supposed to be filled at all.

Maybe Joaquin Phoenix will bring the world of PTA a bit of stability. Wait, he's one of PTA's least stable protagonist's?
'The Master' sees Freddie Quell, a troubled, boozy drifter, struggling with the trauma of World War II and whatever inner demons ruled his life before that. On a fateful night in 1950, Freddie boards a passing boat and meets Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a religious movement called the Cause.
A fan favourite of many PTA-followers, but will Rhys and Kane join the alluring cult of 'The Master'?

After having some laughs with PTA's prior efforts; there's no laughs to be had when there will be blood. The director digs a little deeper than he usually would, and the man strikes oil.
Ruthless silver miner, turned oil prospector, Daniel Plainview moves to oil-rich California. Using his adopted son HW to project a trustworthy, family-man image, Plainview cons local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. However, local preacher Eli Sunday suspects Plainviews motives and intentions, starting a slow-burning feud that threatens both their lives.
Kane and Rhys go prospecting together, and fight the foundations of religion itself, in this hard to swallow, but dramatically satisfying film.

PTA decides to take a quick break from epic-proportion madhouse ensembles that make your mind work in overtime, to both explore the complexities of something as simple as love, and work with Adam Sandler.
Barry Egan is a timid and shy man leading a lonely, uneventful life -- partly due to the constant berating he suffers from his seven sisters. However, several events transpire that shake up Egan's mundane existence, one of which is falling in love with one sister's co-worker, Lena.
Kane and Rhys unpack what they think PTA is trying to say about love in this effort, and try to figure out why he may have decided to stay from the ensembles he was more used to and instead go for something a bit more... intimate.

How does one go on living after watching 'Magnolia'? You record a podcast about it. Impressively, the pod doesn't reach the length of the film itself.
On one random day in the San Fernando Valley, a dying father, a young wife, a male caretaker, a famous lost son, a police officer in love, a boy genius, an ex-boy genius, a game show host and an estranged daughter will each become part of a dazzling multiplicity of plots, but one story.
Rhys and Kane take on this daunting film, intimidated by its length, intense themes and the slight possibility that Kane isn't into this maybe as much as Rhys is.

Everyone is blessed with one special thing.
For PTA, it seems to be film making.
It's 1977, and teenage busboy Eddie Adams gets discovered by Jack Horner, who takes him under his wing and transforms him into the adult-film sensation: Dirk Diggler.
Rhys and Kane bite off PTA's second feature, which already packs in a giant ensemble, and shoves its audience deep into the adult-film-industry of the 1970s. There's drugs, blood, inspirational character transformations, and Jessie's Girl.

The hardcore film analysis helmets are coming on. Rhys and Kane are taking a break from horror and kids movies to go through the filmography of one of Rhys' favourite directors: PTA.
This episode sees a bit of a rundown of who Paul Thomas Anderson is as a film maker, why we should care about him, and explores his first directorial feature.
A seed has been planted, and a whole floodgate opened unleashing: strange paternal dynamics, lost men in a world full of loneliness, and John C. Reilly. Without any of which, a PTA movie could not be formed.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS FRANCHISE MARATHON
After a long road of many little singers covered in fur, a few strange A-to-B kids movies, and only one Dave and Uncle Ian, the entire Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise has been marathoned.
Kane and Rhys are more cut-out for horror movies and iconic trilogies, but they've done the hard work and walked the line... now its time that they rank these Chipmunk films and cleanse them from the podcast for good.

ALIEN FRANCHISE MARATHON
Alien is BACK... and Marathon Me could not be more excited. Horror franchise installments from this year have been pretty damn good, and with Fede Alvarez on-board, things are looking promising.
In this entry, we join the timeline between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) and see Space colonisers come face to face with the most terrifying life-form in the universe while scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station. I wonder if we'll see a familiar face(hugger) or two.
Rhys and Kane revisit the franchise, place Romulus in their ranking, and debate all things alien-babies and maternal fears once again.
