What happened with this?

JOEY

Somebody had a major crash. Parts 

got thrown in all different directions. 

SERGIO

Phew. I feel bad for them.

JOEY

(smiling)

Hey, it’s more work for us. Which 

we really need. God intervened. Now, 

watch. With gas prices coming down, 

they’re all gonna start coming in 

today.

JULIO

Escuché que han subido de vuelta.

JOEY

English please.

SERGIO

He says he heard they’re starting 

to go back up. 

JOEY

No... We got a deal with Iran so 

they’re gonna keep going down.

SERGIO

But now they’re fighting again. 

They’re fighting over who gets control 

of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran attacked 

a ship so now the U.S. is retaliating. 

Iran says that ship didn’t pass the 

right way.

JULIO

Locúra.

SERGIO

Si. 

JOEY

Well, who are they to make up the 

rules? They lost the war. 

SERGIO

They don’t think so.

JOEY

You mean we’re going to have to go 

right back into this hell?

SERGIO

Yeah, I’m afraid, así es.

JOEY

Real pain in the groin. Well, I 

hope our armed forces really kick 

their ass good this time. They forgot 

how painful it was before. How 

quickly people forget. Cause I’m not 

going through this again.

A customer enters the shop.

JOEY

You see? We’re not having that kind 

of drop-off.

JULIO

Well, despues un rato, tienen que 

entrar. Oh sorry. Eventually, they’ve 

got to come in. They need to use 

their cars.

JOEY 

Yes, but I hate this game of cat 

and mouse trying to get the customers 

to come in. Well let’s get to work 

and earn our pay.

The customer has entered the office.

JOEY

Well, good morning sir, thank you 

for choosing Joey’s Auto Repair. How

can I help you today?

INT. JAIL, JOSH’S CELL – DAY

WALINSKY

How are you keeping up here? Going 

out of your skull?

JOSH

How’d you know?

WALINSKY

Oh... I just figured.

JOSH

You ever been in jail?

WALINSKY 

No, except to visit clients. That’s 

the number one complaint. So you 

want to find out how long you’re 

gonna stay here. I can only inquire 

about when the parole board is due 

to meet but I can’t move up the 

meeting. You’ll just have to sit 

tight. 

JOSH

You mean there’s nothing we can do 

about that?

WALINSKY

Yeah, it’s like a trial. If there 

is a backlog, which there usually 

is, you just have to wait. 

JOSH

My mom was saying I have to get you 

on it because otherwise it’ll drag 

on.

WALINSKY

Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you 

but that’s not how it works. I know 

it’s disconcerting to feel in limbo 

about how much time you’ll get but 

this is unfortunately how it is. It’s 

a long time to two years, which 

is the minimum you’ll get. By then, 

you’ll know. Not knowing is just one 

of the tortures new inmates with 

parole go through but after a while, 

you’ll get over it as you get used 

to it and one day goes into the next. 

This is just the initial period 

when parolees go through parole 

torture as they wait to find out. It 

usually doesn’t come out right away 

because they want to observe your 

behavior over time. So that’s how 

it’s going to be, young man.

INT.(EXT.) ENTRANCE TO HIGH SCHOOL/CORRIDOR

The usual group of girls are coming in, Samantha, Kamala, Angela, Cathy and a very tired Amanda.

SAMANTHA

(to Amanda)

Busy weekend, huh?

AMANDA

I almost skipped out of coming in.

SAMANTHA

Well, I’m glad you made it. I don’t 

see you much anymore. 

AMANDA

Oh, I almost died. We had two weddings 

on Saturday. Bringing food, taking 

dishes back and forth all day 

Saturday. I thought I was gonna die.

I never seen that many people, or 

food, in one place at the same time.

Made out nice in tips, though. I’ll

treat you all to something.

The lull of BACKGROUND CONVERSATION seems to STOP.

AMANDA

Wow, you say you’ll treat and everybody

gets quiet. I’ll have to remember 

that.

SAMANTHA

How was your weekend, Cathy?

CATHY

Oh. By comparison, kind of boring.

I watched a movie, nothing exciting.

ANGELA

What movie?

CATHY

Uh... It was like a really old classic

called “On The Waterfront”. 

ANGELA

What’s it about. 

CATHY

Oh, these really tough guys getting

mixed up in a scheme that leads to 

murder. It’s really well done.

ANGELA

Mm.

KAMALA

Alright we better get going to class.

SAMANTHA

No, that’s Amanda’s line.

KAMALA

I actually said it before she was

saying it.

AMANDA

Today doesn’t feel like a day for

it and I have no idea why.

They shuffle on toward their classrooms.

CATHY

Maybe all that work.

AMANDA

Yeah, that’s probably it.

KAMALA

We did political calls for campaigns

but Samantha’s dad broke it up and

said we couldn’t do it in his house.

SAMANTHA

He’s actually violating our civil 

right to lobby and to protest.

KAMALA

But you can’t dismiss the technicality

that it was happening in his house.

AMANDA

How’s your trial going? I see you

came in today.

KAMALA

They’re doing last minute deliberations

by questioning witnesses in absentia

and tomorrow they do final deliberations.

SAMANTHA

I’m so over that trial at this point.

It took too long.

KAMALA

Unfortunately, that’s the trend now,

justice delayed. At least we’re not

waiting on the inside.

SAMANTHA

Oh my God, that makes me think of 

Josh. I hate that he has to be in 

there for so long just because he 

wanted to go to a concert.

AMANDA

I saw him last night. He said he’s 

gonna ask his lawyer to speed up the

parole board meeting so he’s hanging

on that.

KAMALA

I don’t think you can do that. I 

think they go by a schedule, like

when you got in, and nobody can 

change that unless someone loses 

their parole.

AMANDA

Oh, he’s gonna be so upset.

KAMALA

Well, he’s still gotta do time. Maybe

by the time the board meets, he’ll

have calmed down.

ANGELA

I heard there’s actually prisoners

who don’t wanna leave prison.

SAMANTHA

Oh, that can’t be true.

KAMALA

Actually, it is, because they get

so used to it, they’re scared to 

leave. Okay...

They file into classrooms, mostly the same one.

Joey is busy working on the car the customer brought in. He’s got his automatic valve replacers helping him lift up old valves and replace them with new ones. His phone RINGS.

Hope you’re having a wonderful July 4. Today’s episode is Episode 91,CHRYSALIS  - THE FAMILY ADVENTURE(S) - Hitting Their Saturation Point - America!: Picking up where we left our characters, the call bank host gives tips on phone calls, never to argue with anyone—the goal is motivation. Samantha watches Kamala doing it at first. Then Samantha makes calls & encounters interesting reactions which she learns to handle without getting emotional as she's inclined to. Amanda and Bonnie are hitting their saturation point as they finish an excruciating day at the hotel, and it's too late for Amanda to visit Josh, who shows deep sadness because he does not know that she was super busy. Amanda, meanwhile, tries to reach him by phone, which does not get to him until the morning. Joey closes shop, with a mixed feeling as the news reports gas prices are starting to come down, sending him into giddy jubilation.

So America gets 2 points from opposite sides of the political spectrum while 2 people’s daily attempt to have 5 minutes together is thwarted because this is wedding season and Amanda has to work all day past the jail’s visiting hours.FADE IN

INSERT. ZOOM CALL/SAMANTHA’S ROOM – DAY

Several participants are shown on Samantha’s computer. Kamala is with Samantha.

CALL COORDINATOR

Okay, now we’ll have a short training 

in how to make the calls. Is there 

anybody who’s already trained? You 

can go right ahead and start calling.

KAMALA

I’ll work with my friend here. Do 

you have the script?

CALL COORDINATOR 

Alright, hang on one second because 

that’s part of the training. Alright, 

we’re trying to reach volume, as 

many voters as we can. The call bank 

includes registered Democrats who 

have voted pretty consistently. In 

this call round, we want to first 

see if they’re aware of the campaign, 

which most of them will be, and why 

it is so important. Then we want to 

ask them if they want to become 

involved. At this stage, we’re looking 

for the most committed supporters.

Now the goal is to have a conversation 

with the voter. If you get a Voicemail, 

don’t leave a message. We will just 

record that as not home so it will 

stay in the bank for a later caller. 

CALL PARTICIPANT

What if someone answers and says so-

and-so is not home?

CALL COORDINATOR

You treat it as not home and you ask

when would be the best time to reach

them. Now they may try to ask you 

why you’re calling. It’s best to tell

them the truth but even if they tell

you so-and-so doesn’t want to talk 

to you or they’ve already made up 

their mind who they’re going to vote 

for, you still mark it as not home, 

and if they gave you a time, you mark 

it in the notes. This way, we’ll be 

able to put their name in the call 

bank for that time. It’s important, 

if you can take as many notes as 

possible especially if we’re unable

to reach a voter. Or if they ask you

a question but you don’t know the 

answer. You tell them someone will

get back to them and you mark the 

question in the notes. Is everybody

clear?

INT. THE HOUSE, SAMANTHA’S ROOM – DAY

Kamala is on the phone and Samantha is watching her.

KAMALA

Hello, I’m looking for Erica Johns.

KAMALA

My name is Kamala Jackson and I’m

with the James Talarico campaign for 

the next U.S. Senator from Texas.

Well, we haven’t made up our mind

yet.

KAMALA

Oh, that’s good to hear. You’re 

taking your time to think through 

the issues and the candidates. I 

just wanted to know when would be 

the best time to call Erica?

VOICE ON PHONE (v.o.)

Well, Erica feels the way I do. She

wants to take her time to decide.

KAMALA

Alright, thank you. Have a good day.

(to Samantha)

The gentleman said they hadn’t made

up their mind yet. Which is good for

Texas. I said I wanted to speak to

Erica because that’s the person we’re

assigned to call. Now I know you’re

thinking why not just talk to everybody?

But we have to stick to the person 

we’re assigned to call. You see?

SAMANTHA

Why? Why not talk to the person who

you get?

KAMALA

Because they’ve done research and it 

showed one, that they’re not reliable

and they might be trying to stop 

people from talking to their spouse.

But the person we’ve been assigned 

to has proven by past election results 

to be either someone who consistently

votes democratically or someone who

has an unusual voting pattern. And 

I took notes while I was talking.

What he said about both of them not

being decided, that she wasn’t home...

At this point, the people who run the

call database will see the notes and

decide how to prioritize the callbacks.

Do you want to give it a try? I’ll 

coach you because I know it’s nerve-

wracking to... It can be a little 

intimidating to find yourself speaking

to a total stranger. But just follow

the script, okay?

SAMANTHA

Okay.

Kamala moves over and puts a chair next to Samantha at the desk. Samantha looks at her.

SAMANTHA

She clicks on it. The computer makes a dialing up sound like an old-fashioned phone call heard from the earpiece of someone making it.

KAMALA

That happens a lot. Be glad you didn’t

have...get name-called or listen to 

a tirade.

SAMANTHA

People really do that? Oh my God.

KAMALA

Don’t worry. Most of them are polite.

Like the worst they’ll do is hang up.

Samantha looks like “Why are we doing this?”

KAMALA

But don’t worry, it’s worth it in 

the end. Just the good feeling to

know we let people know there’s a 

better alternative to what’s going

on today. Because there’s a lot of

anxiety and fear about where we’re 

going so we’ve actually got the wind

at our back. Like that caller...

person you spoke to was probably a 

Trump diehard but now has misgivings

and is considering voting across 

party lines. So that should encourage

you. Because, trust me. They’re not

crossing party lines the other way.

That’s not the mood of the country.

It’s only the diehards that’ll stay

in the Trump camp this year. And 

that’s not enough to win elections.

SAMANTHA

KAMALA

Episode 90: Josh is eating breakfast in a group hall, alone while other prisoners sit together, mostly ignoring him, one or two occasionally glancing at him. Samantha and Giselle collectively bring the breakfast they made into the living room and eat it while Giselle asks Samantha what she’s gonna do today and Samantha has to try and hide that it’s political work so she says they’ll be catching up with each other. Amanda and Bonnie’s morning is filled with the insane craziness of the large job of uprooting chairs and filling the mega banquet hall with twenty large tables. Serving all the customers proves to be quite a feat. Meanwhile, it’s very quiet still at Joey’s shop. Someone comes in to fix a flat. Joey tries to sell him a new tire and a maintenance job, but the customer reacts with shock and tells Joey he has to get to San Diego. Bonnie and Amanda have their work cut out for them serving all those customers and then after they clean up, they have to get set up all over again for another banquet. Meanwhile, they still have to do rooms. Giselle greets Kamala warmly when she comes. Samantha quicky leads her up to her room. Joey has another customer who is hearing a noise. Joey’s luck seems to pick up when it turns out to be several noises—more to fix. Samantha and Kamala have a slightly awkward moment as Samantha’s tries so hard to win back Kamala’s love and Kamala, touched by her pleas, finally realizes it’s her own fear of love that’s holding her back and they get down and make love, surprisingly since the expectation was they’d be doing political work first. As work picks up for Joey, and, of course, for Bonnie and Amanda as the banquet begins and customers are there, Samantha and Kamala have that post-lovemaking bliss and then motivate themselves to get to work on the political stuff. They join a Zoom meeting where their candidate, James Talarico shares a message of defiant hope.

Welcome to the next exciting episode of Chrysalis - The Family Adventures, Episode 89, Everybdy Wants Something. And boy do they ever. 

Episode 89: Everybody Wants Something:

Kamala finally makes up with Samantha, partly because she wants to invite Samantha to help her with political campaigning but also she does miss her. Joey, nervous from the slowdown, wants Samantha to look for work but Giselle cuts him down on this because she is concerned that it is so hard for Samantha to concentrate and keep up with her schoolwork. She also cuts down Samantha’s suggestion about working with Kamala on campaigns, saying it’s volunteer work. When pressed, Samantha amazingly is able to explain a scientific concept. After more failed attempts by Joey and Samantha for her to work, Samantha asks for her room back twice and then, alone, calls Kamala. She invites Kamala over for the weekend, and Kamala agrees. She then goes on to explain why calling voters is important.

The next morning, Joey’s up real early, which Giselle says is way too early but she’s glad he’s trying on his own to make the extra money. She remains firm about not asking her boss for a raise. At the hotel, Bonnie wakes Amanda up at this super early hour because they have to work a wedding, Amanda saying she barely got two hours sleep but Bonnie reminds her of her promise to Stew and that gets her to heave herself up. She enjoys a lathery shower, starting to fantasize about Josh, but Bonnie interrupts her saying they gotta be dressed and out there for the work. Joey, arriving at the shop, goes crazy talking to himself trying to talk the day up to throw some work his way. Back at the hotel, it turns out they’ll need a bigger space for the wedding reception which means tearing up the seats in the main banquet room and they have to get some men to do the heavy lifting, which means Amanda and Bonnie have to wait around, Amanda not happy to have had to get up o early. At home, Samantha asks Giselle for permission to have Kamala over and offers to help her and it gets a little messed up when she has to explain to Kamala why she’s sayig it like she’s inviting her for the first time and Giselle calls her back to do the work she promised. Joey’s rotating tires in his empty shop singing his song.

Amanda visits Josh. They hold hands nervously. When Josh asks if he’s making her nervous, she recounts having to put up with Samantha complaining but Josh says only he and she can understand about not taking the shit of life seriously like that because they’ve known real deprivation. He also refuses to join her dumping on Samantha but mentions his fondness for his sister. Amanda then confesses a realization that they’re really no different than Samantha because of the way they are clinging to each other, even on the point of stressing about it and she feels remorse for being hard on Samantha, promising to apologize to her.

Episode 88: In her daily jail visit, Amanda laments to Josh her troubles with Samantha giving her and her friends a hard time because she’s broken up over Kamala’s harsh avoidance of her and unsure if they’re broken up or if she should pursue her back, Amanda saying no, Angela echoing her that she doesn’t need someone who’s gonna be like that. Josh assumes an air of maturity saying that all that is extreme drama over minor things. Amanda, realizing her own attachment to Josh, then expresses remorse for being hard on Samantha and resolves to Josh to apologize to her. When she does so in the jail waiting room afterward, Samantha is defensive but then appreciates her efforts for their friendship and softens somewhat. But this shortens Samantha’s visit as a guard is inflexible about the time allowed in. In that short time, what comes out is, both think the other’s got it worse, and then she has to quickly leave. Samantha runs into Joey upon leaving, surprised to see him, while Joey displays his usual sarcastic defensiveness. Inside, with Josh, he continues being defensive—Joey—thinking his studying all day arrangement sounds too good for jail. When Josh asks about his life, he says Trump’s war will push the Iranians into an agreement that will send prices plummeting down and business teeming once again at his shop. Josh is amused by Joey’s same craziness that used to annoy him before. When the guard comes, it seems too soon and Joey backhandedly tells him he needs these visits extended because the Iran war will soon make him busy and keep him from coming here. Samantha struggles to do her homework. 

Giselle asks Josh what really happened with the latest police discovery. He says don’t worry the police had to close the new report on a technicality. Then she fires a fierce reality check on him about how his using his skills to get things he shouldn’t be getting has now put him where he’s forced to pay a heavy price.

At home, Samantha begs Giselle to let her go to her room saying she’s broken up from Kamala and just needs to be alone. Giselle, feeling hard-pressed about this, says okay but just this once and all your homework needs to be done before your dad returns in an hour. Samantha eagerly accepts but it doesn’t turn out to be that easy. She starts trying to do her homework but before she knows it, she is texting or messaging her friends, including telling Amanda that that kiss felt really good despite that they can’t do it. Amanda says whatever, she’s got to get ready for the weekend job.

Joey tells Giselle she’s got to ask for a raise or extra hours and they get into it about the slowdown at Joey’s work, which, despite his feigned optimism, is broken through by real trepidation.

This episode is driven primarily by Giselle's courtroom testimony and the consequences of Amanda's message reaching Josh, making it one of the more emotionally consequential episodes in the recent run. Giselle's testimony provides the emotional center, while the Amanda/Josh storyline provides the suspense and cliffhanger momentum that carries the episode forward.

Longer synopsis:

Giselle Stivic testifies in the ongoing trial of Officer Justin Bradock, describing the fear she felt during the COVID lockdown, Samantha’s condition when she returned home from the protest, and the devastating emotional aftermath that eventually led to Samantha’s hospitalization and ongoing PTSD treatment. Her heartfelt testimony clashes sharply with the defense’s insistence that there is insufficient evidence to convict.

At the same time, Josh receives an unexpected message from Amanda inside the jail’s computer system. What initially appears to be a harmless expression of love quickly escalates into a security breach investigation. During Amanda’s visit, jail officials confiscate her phone and discover traces of an old hacking exploit connected to Josh. Although Amanda insists she never intended to break any rules, both she and Josh find themselves facing new consequences.

As Samantha and Giselle are left in the dark about events unfolding inside the jail, Joey learns through attorney channels that Amanda’s phone has become the center of a new legal problem. Later, Amanda races to her hotel job only to discover that her unexpected detention has already cost her valuable work hours. With relationships, legal battles, and futures hanging in the balance, everyone is forced to confront the consequences of choices made long ago.

She heads back to the bed in the alcove, gets into it, puts on some music and lies back in the bed.

INT. JOSH’S PRIVATE JAIL CELL – DAY

Josh is sitting at a computer, a MONITOR sitting by his side, watching him. He is engaged in what looks like some form of study. 

All of a sudden, a dropdown message appears: “From Amanda the Goat – Hey thinking of you.” Both Josh and the monitor appear shocked. 

JOSH

Would it be considered breach of 

protocol to just say I’m fine, 

thinking of you too?

MONITOR

That’s not supposed to happen.

JOSH

She’s my girlfriend who I love and

would really like to respond to. I

don’t know how she got in.

MONITOR

Did you share any confidential 

information like a password with

her?

JOSH

No.

MONITOR

You sure? Nothing passed to her when

you really desired her and she said

you had to?

JOSH

Oh no, she wouldn’t do that.

MONITOR

Did you ever do any hacking yourself

on her phone?

JOSH

(seeming to remember 

something)

Uhno, wouldn’t’a ever done that to

her.

MONITOR

You sure?

JOSH

No. Like I said, I stopped hacking 

after I met her. I mean after she 

started coming over. When we were 

really together.

MONITOR

Is it possible she got on your phone

maybe when you were sleeping and got 

hold of the codes you kept on there?

JOSH

Oh no, she was there only after my 

phone was taken away.

MONITOR

What about that computer hack you 

did to look for her?

JOSH

You mean the one where the computer 

froze and I got nowhere? 

MONITOR

This is strange. And you’re sure you

didn't do any hacking on your phone...

JOSH

Well, this was a harmless message.

MONITOR

Did you tell her verbally how to 

hack into a system?

JOSH

No. Our purpose was only for love.

MONITOR

It was love that got you in here.

JOSH

I guess I won’t get to tell her I
