Rhys was born in Guam in a family of 8 children. Their mother died when they were 4 years old. They were taken away from their dad and moved from family to family. Their nomadic-type childhood allowed them to not overly attach to a particular family dynamic and, therefore, according to Rhys, allowed them to more easily process their trauma. Rhys committed themselves to Jesus at the age of 13 and felt loved. They began to feel confused and ashamed of the attraction they felt for others. They began to feel unsafe in their own body. Later, they found freedom while attending college and learning about human development. It broke their heart to lose their faith. Yet liberating as they realized they can now think about whatever they want to AND they can love people without any agenda to change them. Eventually they got divorced from their partner since they wanted to explore their sexuality with others. We discuss how platonic love is unfairly assumed to be at the bottom of the love hierarchy when we believe,... it's the top. We talk about how assigned-female-at-birth individuals are often royally fucked when their relationships end. Rhys discusses why this has resulted in their committing to not love with a sexual or romantic partner. We discuss cultivating large and vibrant communities for ourselves. And lastly, we explore what it's like to be a secular parent. How do we raise our children better than we were raised? How do we hold space for our children's emotions? And likewise, how do we hold space for that child that is still within our own selves? Join us - it's a great talk. Way too short, in my opinion.

Pat Green worked as a minister for 16 years before he became a taxi driver. He had joined an Assembly of God church when he was younger, finding mission and belonging, even though his passion for photography was seen as an "idol". He couldn't be himself and so he adopted "personality tofu". Raised by his grandparents from the "silent generation" he inherited their trauma of believing there are just some things we don't talk about. Pat's child came out as belonging to the queer community in 2012 and Pat woke up to that along with seeing Jay Bakker deviate from the standard Christian judgment of that community. Although Pat was growing, those in his Christian community and congregation no longer understood him as he was journeying into affirmation of identities. Pat was tired of everyone having an opinion about his child, so he took a year long sabbatical, got divorced, and stopped believing in 2015. He is now deeply passionate about the rights of the marginalized. His awareness of his own hangups and biases as a cishet white man is one of the things that directly drives his passion. We discuss the essential contributions of all our cultures and photography activism.

While Andrew was just a little fetus, his mom received a prophetic word that he'd become a minister. He studied at Princeton Seminary and fulfilled the prophecy. However, internally, he remained miserable and anxious. He began to evaluate his belief system and discovered that his Christian beliefs were the problem. He left Christianity in 2015 and now helps others recovering from religious trauma. Together, we discuss "secular spirituality", the "Self", "ego death", "surrendering" to "nature", and so much more, all within a framework of trying to be as responsible as possible with our word use. It's a pretty friggin' nuanced and exciting conversation. If you've been struggling with your internal voice/experience post-religion, this is a good episode for you.

In this episode, I speak with my friend Josh, who I lovingly refer to as Ben Affleck. Josh was a lonely in high school but found community at his girlfriend's church. Not the first time I've heard about libido-prompted conversions. Learning about health, by the end of high school, he was eventually voted Snowcoming King. He got very involved in his church and spoke with other high schoolers about pledging their purity to their future spouse. He married his Christian wife and had three kids in 1.5 years instead of pursuing missions like they had planned. Around 2016, he started to have serious doubts and stopped reading his Bible. He got sucked into some unethical behavior which eventually opened his eyes to how unhappy he was. He and his wife separated in 2018 before Josh made one last ditch effort to save his faith and his marriage, attending 5 different support groups a week. Once COVID-19 hit and the world stopped, Josh's internal veil was lifted. He got on meds, stopped going to his groups, his depression lifted. In May of 2020, he decided he was done with god, got divorced, and bought his own house. He started getting into post-religious content like Voices of Deconversion podcast, Hawking, and Dawkins, eventually leading him to this podcast and to becoming my friend!

Sean was born into a Mennonite family that was extremely hardworking and very devoted to god, family, and community. Sean took on all of these qualities. In his early teens, his parents decided to start attending a charismatic cult disguised as an evangelical church. Because of his upbringing, he couldn't see any other option than full devotion. He drank ALL the Kool-Aid. He was a worship leader, training to be a youth leader, and on his way to Bible college probably to become a pastor. Thankfully, life took a left turn in his mid twenties, and now he's a polyamorous atheist who hails Satan.

Monique grew up in the Mormon religion. As a child and young adult, her life revolved around the religion. In the church, she dealt with cognitive dissonance, especially with regards to people claiming to be a part of the one and only true church, but engaging in racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of bigotry, often in the name of God. She left the church when she was 30, and since then has been on a spiritual journey from codependence to autonomy and healing. She is currently at a state of believing everything and nothing, that spirituality is all about our connection with ourselves and others, that our perception shapes our reality, and that in aligning ourselves with the things we resonate with, we will be empowered to do what is best for ourselves, whatever that looks like.

Rob is from western Canada and was born into a very pious German immigrant family. He could not speak English when starting school, and grew up in a German speaking Evangelical Lutheran church. It consisted mostly of other German immigrants, and involved attendance up to 4 times a week. His school years included a lot of time at church, practicing the violin (and a little piano and trumpet), attending a French Immersion school for 3 years, rec hockey at the local outdoor rink and ultimately completing a Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Christian Studies. He has worked in variety of roles, including Indigenous education co-ordinator, high school Bible teacher, currency day trader, social justice organizer and musician. A thinker and voracious reader, he started the faith deconstruction process in his late thirties, and has struggled through the re-building process, including a significant breakdown around 4 years ago. This led to a very helpful focus on trauma, and what that means in a living a healthy life. He has been married for 26 years, has a son (18) and daughter (20) and is doing his best to survive Covid with the help of Netflix, his hot tub and a part-time adopted "therapy"-cat!

Christine is a licensed mental health therapist who hails from Colorado and currently lives in rural Ohio. She was raised fundamentalist evangelical and spent the first decade of her adult life deconstructing her faith. However, she remains fascinated by religion and spirituality. Christine earned her counseling master's degree from a progressive Christian seminary in Indianapolis, where she met her husband and now plays a sometimes reluctant role of a wife of a pastor. They have a one year old daughter. She thinks of Christianity as a cultural marker that has deeply shaped her, and (for now) has decided to own that and do what she can from the inside to move the religion in a more liberty-and-justice-for-ALL direction. She is passionate about the intersections of psychology, religion, and culture. She is working on publishing her first book about religious trauma and faith deconstruction, tentatively entitled Wall to Mosaic: Healing from Fear-Based Religion.
