Drs. Chris Parsons & Adam Pack introduce the new winners of the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarships: Rebecca Hamilton for her project entitled ‘Cognition in the wild: Dolphin communication during a role-specialized foraging tactic’ and Solène Derville for her project entitled, ‘Whales of the deep: Analyzing movement and diving of humpback whales to understand oceanic breeding congregations in New Caledonia’. Chris also chats to the Herman family about the life of Louis Herman, his legacy and their aims for this new award.

Umair Shahid chats to host Chris Parsons about his work on cetacean conservation in the Indian ocean, especially dealing with the problem of by-catch in fishing gear. 

Dr. Chris Parsons talks to Alicia Schuler about her research on the impacts of whale-watching in Juneau, Alaska, on both the whales that are being observed and the positive impacts that whale-watching can have on human tourists and their interest in marine conservation.

They also talk about US Government and NGO efforts to promote sustainable whale-watching via the “Whale SENSE” program (for more information go to www.whalesense.org) 

Dr. Daniel Palacios talks to host Chris Parsons about satellite tagging whales, how he started his career by charming his way onto a whale research vessel, and his journey from marine biology obsessed boy in Colombia to a professor of whale biology in Oregon.

In this week’s episode, Eric Angel Ramos talks to host Chris Parsons about his research in Belize, the trials and tribulations of life in the field, about nearly being eaten by a crocodile, how dangerous dolphins can be, and whales & dolphins in New York harbor.

Dr. Louisa Ponnampalam chats with host Chris Parsons about her research on dugongs, dolphins, and whales in Malaysia, as well as her previous work in Oman on spinner dolphins. They discuss some of the novel small cetacean behaviors they have observed in Malaysia as well as discussing their favorite cetacean: the finless porpoise. 

They also talk about the challenges about working in Southeast Asia, the difficulties of having a career in marine mammal conservation and the importance of social science in conservation in this double-length episode. 

Chris Parsons talks to Dr. Jennifer Lewis about her research on Ganges river dolphins in Bangladesh as well as her change of career from a research biologist to a science communicator and documentary filmmaker. They talk about the use of storytelling to communicate science as well as Jennifer’s new documentary on environmental hero Professor Lee Talbot, the writer of the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. 

Dave Steckler chats with host Chris Parsons about some of the new technology being developed to detect cetaceans at sea and provides career advice for those who want to search for marine mammals and protected species at sea for a career.
