In this week’s podcast I try to answer the self imposed question of whether any lessons that were learnt during the First World War’s Naval war that are still relevant today.

The three main areas are Fleet in being, commerce raiding and the two power rule. The episode is also sprinkled with side bars as my mind wanders to answer other questions no one has asked!

This week’s episode looks at the battle of Sluys in 1340 between the French Navy and King Edward III’s invasion force - I’m really not an expert but hopefully it is a good overview of a battle I’d never heard of!

I return this week to talk about the Battle of Havana between the gun boat Meteor and Aviso Bouvet during the Franco Prussian War.

This took a lot less time than I planned so I also throw in the story of the Augusta (a Prussian Commerce Raider) and the Nymphe defending Danzig from a French Blockade.
