Welcome to the Mark Wood Explorer Podcast. Join Mark on his latest expedition as he battles through some of the world's most extreme terrain to summit Mount Everest.
In this episode Mark is back home in the UK after ill health made any further attempts to ascent Everest impossible. His involvement in the climb would have endangered his own life and the lives of the other participants of the climb.
He shares his thoughts and feelings and reads a section of a recent blog entitled ‘A Dead Lion’ where he is looking back on this trip, which he summarises with a famous Shackleton quote ‘better a live donkey than a dead lion’.
As Mark explained in a previous episode, a summit attempt is only successful if everyone gets home safe, so the decisions to head back to the UK was made for the right reasons at the right time.

In this episode an emotional Mark reveals that this expedition - for him - might be finished on medical grounds. During one of the standard training ascents Mark started to feel very unwell and the decisions was made to immediately head back to Basecamp to get medical assistance. Tests, some time on an oxygen tank and a few ECG’s later it was revealed that Mark has a serious chest infection and might not be able to continue on this ascent of Everest. Given that Mark - and the wider team - have been in training for 2 months already this is a cutting blow and you can hear the upset in Mark’s voice, however, as he highlights, the success of a trek is getting home safely, so that focus has to be the priority.
