Dense breast tissue and breast cancer risk, is a yearly mammogram enough?
Margie Singleton was not informed that her dense breast tissue could not be adequately screened for breast cancer with a routine mammogram. After receiving a "normal" mammogram result, she found a breast lump. Thankfully her doctor ordered an ultrasound, but she was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer. She is now a breast cancer survivor, but she didn't stop with beating cancer! She worked tirelessly to have a law passed that requires a woman's breast density to be reported on mammogram reports, and for her to be informed of the density and made aware that a mammogram alone may not be sufficient for detecting breast cancer within dense breasts. But did Margie stop there? Of course not! She is the founder of Margie's Army Foundation where she has made it her passion to educate women about dense breast tissue and breast cancer risk. Her foundation also helps financially support women who are battling breast cancer. She joins us in this episode to share her journey in the hopes of saving lives!
Guess what? You still haven't heard the best part of this story. Because of Margie's passion for ensuring that this never happens to another woman, she saved her friend Liane's life. Liane Willard also joins us in this episode to tell us how Margie's work both during and after her battle with breast cancer saved her life, as well as provide information for the importance of advocating for yourself and your health!
Important info: This was our first virtual interview, and we are so blessed that these ladies were willing to join us so that all of you can be empowered with this life-saving information! However, the connection was a little fuzzy in some places. But we are begging you not to let that stop you from listening to the information that these two incredible women are working so hard to share. We truly believe that this information could save your life!
In this episode, you will learn:

Breast Cancer Is The Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death Among Women In The United States
Every two minutes, a woman in the US is diagnosed with breast cancer. In a room full of eight women, at least one of them will likely be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.
This will likely impact someone that you know very well, and possibly even you!
Why should you get a mammogram?
You will find the answer to this question and so much more in this special episode of the Marked Medicine podcast.
Breast cancer screening has been proven to lower the death rate by 26%. Almost 2/3 of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are diagnosed at a localized stage which yields a 99% survival rate. So screening does work!
In this episode, Mrs. Patti Elliott, a breast cancer survivor, joins us and details the importance of screening and early detection, and details how that likely saved her life. She is also very honest about the fact that she is lucky to have had a very strong support system throughout her journey, but she witnessed firsthand that this is not the case for all women. Patti is able to share the importance of supporting women who are battling breast cancer from the point of view of a woman who has walked this journey. Her compassion for women that she met during her journey is palpable, and this is definitely a story that you don't want to miss!
Mrs. Lou Hennesy, who is a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Douglas, Georgia, also joins us in this episode. This groups is also nicknamed "Douglas is Passionately Pink!" She shares the reason that this group of women is passionate about raising awareness for breast cancer screening, and she details all that her group is currently doing to raise money for the women in her community who are currently battling breast cancer.

Everyone Has A Story, And Its So Important To Be Willing To Listen
Have you ever wondered how you can possibly recognize your inner beauty and find your inner joy when you're going through a difficult situation? Maybe you are experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety. Maybe you are struggling with mental health, and it's not related to postpartum depression and anxiety at all. Are you struggling with the barriers put in place by society and are they preventing you from seeking help for your mental health? Are you a healthcare provider that would like to expand your knowledge about how you can help others seek their inner beauty and joy, and you need a testimony of hope from someone that has conquered depression and anxiety and is very successful today. If any of the above things sound like you, you are in for a treat!
The importance of self care for mental health can not be overstated, and self care activities don't have to be hard or expensive. You can read a book, take a walk, or even do something to help someone else recognize their own self worth! As a healthcare provider, we can teach our patients coping mechanisms, or even reassure them that mental health health is just as important as physical health, and treatment with medication is not something to be frowned upon.
In today's episode, we will be talking with Courtney Sheffield who is a registered nurse turned makeup artist, but most importantly wife and mama to six beautiful girls. She details her journey through postpartum depression and anxiety, and shares with us the impact that working on her self-confidence has had on not only her, but everyone around her. She is very candid and raw about coming to the realization that there was no way she could fully love those around her, until she began loving herself. She shares with us how she uses her extensive medical background and personal experiences with depression and anxiety to now pour into women in a different way, and help them recognize that looking beautiful is nice, but feeling beautiful is life changing!
Courtney is now a makeup artist for Seint Beauty, and she explains that makeup isn't magic, but it's the vehicle that helped her begin to work on her own self-esteem, confidence, and joy. If you are struggling with your mental health, or know someone that is, you don't want to miss this episode. She radiates joy and will certainly fill you with the motivation that you need to begin loving yourself.
