February 04, 2020Market Wrap - Stock picks — Standard BankCaroline Cremen from Adviceworx chose Standard Bank Group as her stock pick of the day. "I'm going to contradict myself because I have said that South African equities is not a great place to be but, when looking at a company like Standard Bank, it's such a quality company, it is so defensive even while we are having the worst cycle at this point it has got a 6% dividend yield, its PE is below 10 and there is no reason for Standard Bank to be trading at such a discounted rate "...more1minPlay
February 03, 2020Market Wrap - Stock pick — Intel CorpCraig Pheiffer from Absa Stockbrokers and Portfolio Management chose Intel Corp as his stock pick of the day. "Im going for Intel. Everyone has a computer or had one in their life that said Intel Inside, but I think the way the world is moving in terms of technology, data, the cloud, artificial intelligence, autonomous cars, 5g etc. All of those technology types require chips and this is the business that Intel is in and I think they're very well geared to benefit from that. In their sector they're also the cheapest in terms of valuation, in terms of price to sales, its well under four. So we like it, it's in our portfolios and had a great run up in the last couple of weeks so I think you don't need to rush out and get it but if it pulls back close to $60 or so I think this is a an $80 year or so in a year's time"...more2minPlay
January 30, 2020Market Wrap - Stock pick — AppleNesan Nair from Sasfin Securities chose Apple as his stock pick of the day. "Stock pick is still a US stock, I still like the tech stuff, so I thought apples numbers were unbelievable, they have a very good upside surprise and there as well as Microsoft, but I'm going to choose Apple that's my stock pick today."...more1minPlay
January 29, 2020Market Wrap - Stock Pick — Sibanye GoldNolwandle Mthombeni from Mergence Investment Managers chose Sibanye Gold Limited as his stock pick of the day."With the uncertainty I'd rather just stick with Sibanya. I know there's been a lot of running in terms of the PGMs but this corona virus introduced a new uncertainty in the market market and you know every one likes to hide in resources so I'd stick it out with Sibanye for the meantime."Alishia asked: "You say stick it out, do you delve in as a buyer at current levels given how hard the share prices is right now?"Mthombeni said: "Yes I will"...more1minPlay
January 28, 2020Market Wrap - Stock Pick — Life HealthcareImtiaz Suliman from Sentio Capital chose Life Healthcare as his stock pick of the day."I'm going with Life Healthcare, I think they've got a very strong model and they've moved into imaging which is the PET scans, bringing the expertise from their alliance medical operation from the UK and trying to replicate that in the South African market. This is a good growth opportunity for a Life Healthcare where we've seen stagnant medical aid lives under cover so that will add another growth opportunity for them. It's a very well run operation they are exiting the Indian operation and Poland is also on the cards to be sold so you have a better capital allocation."...more1minPlay
January 27, 2020Market Wrap - Stock pick — NaspersWaldo du Plessis from Nitrogen Fund Managers chose Naspers as his stock pick of the day."Today I'm going for Naspers, just last week they announced that they're selling a portion or 22 million Prosus shares, and that was at €67,50 on Monday the price is at €65. It raised about R27bn of cash, they have R6bn of cash on the balance sheet already and they're going to do buybacks with that, so you know, that should be a good move."...more1minPlay
January 24, 2020Market Wrap - Stock pick — AlibabaMartin Smith from Anchor Capital chose Alibaba as his stock pick of the day.“My stock pick and what I've done over the course of the last couple months is got offshore. I think with the rand being a bit stronger, given the carry trade that's happened I think I would look to externalise on my rand, maybe, hopefully it goes below the R14 figure and so I would look to buy some US stocks, something the tech stocks maybe. If there is a little bit of a dip but it would be to go for something like Alibaba. That is where I'd be putting my money.”...more1minPlay
January 22, 2020Market Wrap - Stock Pick — US Tech StocksRobert Towell from Sasfin Securities chose US Tech Stocks as his stock pick of the day. "I think it is very difficult in South Africa to find a stock pick right now, especially with the budget coming and the possible downgrade. So we're still looking offshore at the moment, we still think US tech is a place where you can find growth and so we're looking at the Apple, Amazon and Google store and we think that there's still a good six months of growth."...more1minPlay
January 21, 2020Market Wrap - Stock Pick — FirstRandSteven Schultz from Momentum chose Firstrand as his stock pick of the day. "Stock pick this evening is FirstRand, I suppose its operating in a very challenging environment but, they have a pretty strong balance sheet at present. It's trading at the bottom of its two-year trading range, the thesis for FirstRand at present is an abundance of liquidity globally so, central banks are obviously going to remain in print mode and as a result we think there's definitely going to be a sustainable carry trade over the coming months if not years. The carry trade we think, is going to support local bond yields if not push local bond yields slightly lower and as a result of our very absent inflation locally. If that does happen, we think that rate sensitive assets like the bank shares and FirstRand for example will benefit from a bit of a rewriting. Base case for us is 17% return per annum for the next three years in our model and I think if you can purchase under R60 its a good buy"...more2minPlay
January 20, 2020Market Wrap - Stock Pick — FTSE ProtocolViv Govender from Rand Swiss Offshore chose US Dollar FTSE Protocol as his stock pick of the day."It's a structure product and is based on the US FTSE 100. It's an auto-call and that if the FTSE is flat or positive in year two and every year there after you get a 9,5% to US dollar pay-off. This is a new product and will only launch officially next week."...more1minPlay
