Discovering the Human Preference for the Status Quo
Change is a natural aspect of life, an ever-present energy that shapes our world and propels us forward. Yet, despite this reality, people often show a deep-seated bias for things to remain the same. This natural preference toward the status quo is attached to a mixture of psychological, social, and evolving factors.
While change holds the possibility for growth and progress, the inclination for familiarity and stability continues to be a dominant influence in people.
From a psychological perspective, (and I don’t profess to be a psychologist) the human brain is wired to seek patterns and familiarity as a means of reducing mental load. The brain relies on mental shortcuts from what we’ve already learned, to process the vast amount of info it receives daily.
Embracing the status quo lessens the need for constant change and decision-making, allowing people to conserve mental energy and avoid the stress associated with the unknown.
