  • #012: Setting Pricing That Brings in Sales and Still Feels Good With Melissa Ronda
How do you figure out how to price your products when everyone tells you to charge your worth? To answer that question satisfactorily, there are a million details we (as marketers) need to know to unpack that statement. The question alone sends off vibes of, her biggest roadblock is how much she values her work period and the stories she's telling herself about how much others will pay. So as you'll hear, first we have to break down what she really does, what the transformation her programs offer, who her ideal client is, and is she even attracting THAT specific client she wants to work with... Ultimately, knowing your value comes down to what value your ideal client places on your work, and how much would they pay for that transformation? Her goal is to teach women how to make this a lifestyle change so they can lose the weight that makes them feel uncomfortable. The second thing that stood out about Melissa's question of pricing and value was that she was a heart-based entrepreneur (who like most heart-centered entrepreneurs) started a business because they are passionate about serving others around them and solving problems they too, have wrestled with. Heart-centered entrepreneurs struggle with pricing naturally because it goes against the way they operate their business. How do you get around the pricing issue if you want to be a legit business that sustains your family?  1. Start with pricing you can comfortably say in the mirror without cringing. 2. Once you settle on a price, ask yourself, "Will I feel like I'm gouging someone at this price? Will I feel resentful of my client if they only pay me $X amount for the work? To get into a heart-centered entrepreneur's head, you have to understand you judge yourself on the hardest of scales, but would never hold someone else to those same standards. To break out of the mental chatter in your mind, ask yourself questions on both ends of the spectrum to see where does your pricing really fall? 3. Give yourself to change the pricing at any point in time and feel OK about it. This is YOUR business. Now I don't want you running around changing your price weekly because you can, but know in your gut, that you are the boss and own it. It's OK to raise your prices. Frankly, you MUST do this to grow and scale. As you improve, your skills will improve, your copy, your work, your everything. Charge accordingly. 4. If no one is buying what you're offering, don't assume it's the value OR price. The most common problem actually is that you aren't doing a good enough job selling the benefits and transformation. I would bet $100 your copy is too I-focused and feature-based. People buy based on emotion and back it up with logic. 5. Remember that you are NOT your customer. You may have started your business to help people like you, but it does not make you your customer. This trips up so many women because they assume that because they may not be willing to pay $X for this service, no one else will either. That is NOT true. 6. Raising your prices or having prices that are not comfortable for everyone does NOT mean that you are excluding people from working with you. Like Melissa discovered, she has many ways for people to get direct help from her through free offers, groups, podcasts, etc. so that if someone CHOOSES to not invest in their health with her through a paid program, course or 1-1 work, they STILL have options where she could serve them without feeling icky about it or leaving people behind. The Creepy Exercise that Will Change EVERYTHING about your marketing  Melissa had a huge breakthrough moment (around 37 minutes) about how to stop skirting around the hard topics that her ideal people are desperate to talk about and have solved. Listen to our conversation around the inner conversations your ideal person is having in their head before they decide on purchasing something from you, to see how to make your marketing and sales copy come to life and start breathing life into how you show up. To follow along and do this exercise for your specific business, do the "Creepy Exercise" with me... yes, it needs a better name! Imagine that you're watching your ideal person from outside their window and they don't know you're there. (See, why it's creepy?) Answer these questions for two scenarios. Scenario #1: Before they know about you Scenario #2: After they've worked with you and had the transformation only you can offer
    • What are they doing when no one is watching?
    • How do they dress?
    • How do they speak to their family?
    • What's their relationship like with their spouse?
    • What do they stay up at night Googling, when everyone else is asleep?
    • What are their habits during the day?
    • How do they eat and what do they snack on?
    • How do they spend their time?
    • What are they NOT doing any more that they used to?
The answers to this exercise will bring your person to life in a way that nothing else can. Suddenly, everything you create for your business makes more sense and is easier to do because the ideal person you're desperately seeking suddenly is real and not a made up person you are hoping to one day find. • #011: How do I launch and market a podcast with Nettye Johnson?
This week on the podcast, my strategy session was with Nettye Johnson and how to launch and market a podcast. Nettye is launching a podcast the week of  August 13th  called Faith Applied that will dive into Biblical principles and see where it is married with science and how to apply it to a person's life. She gave the example of setting habits as a topic she will cover and how she will look at the science and neurological implications of what happens when habits are formed, how we set and break and create them, but then also bring a faith component in.  She will also look at how a Scripture that mirrors that science principle can give a mantra or meditation someone can use to reflect and focus to replace a bad habit. She set a goal of launching by mid-August and wants to know how to launch it between now and then. Here are the big questions we tackled: Is my timeline realistic to launch a new podcast?  YES! You will take as much time as you give yourself. So whatever timeline you're setting, you can launch on that timeframe, and if it's longer than 6 weeks, shorten it. The most important thing to know is WHAT you need to accomplish to launch it into the world. (Which we cover below) How do I decide what type of content/episodes to create?  Do YOU. There is no right or wrong way to run a podcast. If you feel like solo episodes are your jam, do those. If you want to be known as the expert host -- the person who knows people -- then do interviews. If you want to showcase how you work with people, do live work with your ideal peeps. And know that you can change it up at any time. It's YOUR podcast. So if you start out doing solo and want to throw a series or interview set in, that's OK. What do I focus on first marketing wise?
    1. Start teasing the podcast to your audience with the main graphics for your podcast.
    2. Batch record your episodes. If you're doing solo episodes, outline what you're talking about (or write a script if that fits your personality better) and block off a few hours to record. If you're doing interviews, book several episodes at a time to record, so you can get into a groove.
    3. Have a page dedicated to your podcast on your website to collect people interested in the podcast pre-launch. You want to be able to send people somewhere as you're talking to the world about the podcast launching, so they can follow along with you and you have an immediate following when you go live. This can have a countdown timer on it, a form to be notified when it launches, a preview, etc.
    4. Brainstorm places to "market" to that your ideal person hangs out. Do market research while slyly promoting your podcast in a group with genuine questions like "How do you feel about X, Y, Z? I'm about to launch a podcast and I'm stuck on where to go next."
    5. Get excited about launching it. Talk about it ALL THE TIME.
    6. Tease the first batched episodes on social media using graphics, quotes from the episodes, etc. to create buzz up front.
    7. Tap into your network of influencers and create a cheerleading squad of 5-10 people you can ask beforehand to help promote it.  Think of people with the same or similar audiences, OR people who could become a big influencer in the future you want to stay connected with.
    8. Ask for reviews when you launch. You can incentivize it or not.
    9. On your podcast, make sure to DO a call-to-action at the end and ask them to take action. If it helps, map out what you have going on IN your business on a calendar so you know WHAT to ask people to do on your podcast, and point all your other marketing to it as well. If you're unsure of what to ask, think about "What's going to get me the most traction in my business right now?"
If you're launching a podcast, how do you use it to market well? One option is to use the podcast to introduce yourself to a new audience and bring people into your marketing funnel. Another option is to use the content and types of episodes you create to qualify people to work with you. How do I connect my podcast to iTunes?  First off, Pat Flynn with Smart Passive Income has an amazing course on how to launch a podcast. I am NOT an affiliate (yet) but I do love this course and highly recommend it if you're serious about using podcasting in your business. Some basics you need to know: To launch a podcast you need:
    • recording equipment
    • a way to edit the podcast (or someone to edit it for you)
    • a graphic for your podcast cover art
    • RSS feed service that will push your episodes to all the podcast directories automatically
    • A page on your website to host the episodes and drive traffic to.
Download my Podcasting 101 Cheatsheet for free with all the recommendations to get started. [activecampaign form=39]   I have a huge mental block when it comes to asking for help for me or for my business. So thinking of a call-to-action to promote anything I do is hard. How do I get over this? First of all, this is SO common. Especially with women who run service-based businesses. If you feel icky about asking someone to do anything for you, break it down into WHAT is the emotion and feeling that is stopping you from asking? What does it say about you if you ask? Then, go smaller. What is a tiny ask that you could make that doesn't feel out of character for you? If you can find one that feels better, and not as overt, start with that and work up to asking for bigger and more impactful things. It's a muscle you have to flex to get better. Finally, consider the impact cost of you NOT asking someone to take action. How will it affect your business if you don't get more visibility? If more people don't find out about what you have to offer? What would you be missing if you can't work with people/help people with what you're doing? That question can help shift the mindset from scary to do-able. Do I run Facebook ads to promote my things and podcast?  It depends. My go-to answer about Facebook ads is this: Do not run ads on Facebook (or anything) until you know where you're sending them and how you're converting them AND it's getting you results. And do NOT run Facebook ads until you are consistently showing up on the platform you want to run ads on. Otherwise, you'll be sending traffic to a funnel that's broke, or sending them to a place with no plan, with no true way of tracking the metrics for these ads. A better resource of time and money is to figure out where you want to be more consistent and how to start driving traffic to that place and into your funnel. IF you have a funnel that works, and a plan for how to convert traffic (if you send it to a group, for example to a Facebook group) then give it a try. Pro Tip:  If you struggle with writing authentically for your brand, try recording yourself talking it out and THEN type out that for your copy. A wonderful thing happens in your brain when you speak. It's unable to both filter the words coming out AND speak at the time, so what comes out automatically becomes more authentic. This tip works for anyone struggling to write about copy, talk about their services, talk about the benefits and to answer the dreaded question: what do you do?  Connect with Nettye: Bio: Nettye Johnson is a wife, mother, author, speaker, Bible teacher, certified health coach, and owner of a Christ-centered wellness organization. • #010: Marketing is NOT my thing. How do I not be spammy? with Lucy Cantley
This week's big question is: Marketing is just not my thing, how do I get visibility so that when I'm ready to sell something so I have an audience ready without feeling like I'm spammy?  Lucy runs a business that helps service-based entrepreneurs launch new projects into the world without getting overwhelmed. She is launching a new group coaching program in the fall to help entrepreneurs launch a passive income stream quickly.  As an expert at launching courses and digital products, she's streamlined the order to accomplish #allthethings that come with launching something so that entrepreneurs not ready to invest in her to manage the project can still be ready to launch something in 8 weeks. On our strategy call this week, we wanted to simplify her marketing plan and take the spammy-ness out of it. Here are the things she typically does on a launch: email marketing campaigns, social media posts, Facebook lives, Facebook ads, interact in Facebook groups and affiliates. One way to simplify your marketing plan is to figure out what are the benchmarks you want to track in your business, that to you, signify success. By narrowing down your focus from #allthethings to only doing the things that lead to you knowing if it's successful, you take out the busy work of marketing and focus on what gives your business results. The second thing I recommended she focus on, is the journey she's taking people on with her marketing. Since she has a lot planned (optins, quizzes, downloads, upsells, etc.), making sure that each piece can lead the audience to the next thing so that they actually make it to when she launches, will be important to nail. The third thing to figure out what types of copy to use in her marketing is to work backward from her program. By looking at who she's trying to get into her program and why they would be joining, she can figure out more of how her program will help their businesses and the specific pain points to talk around to attract that type of buyer. Initial attraction in marketing is all about the feelings and the emotional connection they feel with your brand and offer. For example, we talked a bit about entrepreneurs who have already tried to launch something without success. Those buyers are going to be gunshy on launching again, so a different conversation is going to have to take place on the sales page, in the video, etc. to help them understand that you created this program so that never happens to them again. On the flipside, she may also have newbies who are finally ready to start passive income and they are all starry-eyed and ready to go, they don't even know the dangers that are waiting for them, so the conversation is more about fueling their fire and being the trusted guide. Once you know WHO you're selling to, you can dive into the features and benefits of your program/course to highlight in your marketing. What happens when you have to put yourself out there to be visible so much, but you don't want to be seen as spammy? We tackled a mindset block Lucy was having around posting too much, talking about her launch too much, etc. I challenged her to think about how many people on her list or followers on Facebook/Instagram sees everything that she does. We came up with maybe half of her list looks at her stuff consistently and who knows about the rest. WOMEN! Here's permission to go hog wild and post because Not. Every. Single. Person. Reads. Your. Stuff. Every. Time. Today it's taking 15-50 touchpoints before someone buys. NOT the traditional 5-7  touchpoints you've been told. That's A LOT of posts, Facebook lives, emails, conversations, etc. that need to happen in our busy world BEFORE someone feels ready to buy. As you listen to the end, notice how beautifully detailed Lucy is about launches. (Can you see why she rocks her biz??) Other things to listen for:  We stop too soon at marketing and give up convinced everyone already knows. The problem is that you probably said it differently each time, so NO ONE gets it yet. Knowing all the details and steps in the world is AWESOME SAUCE. But how do you set yourself up for success on your sales pages so that people ACTUALLY buy and what high-touch points need to be on the sale page to help people on the fence commit? • #009: Help! I've exhausted my warm leads... how do I fill my programs now?
We've all been there. You start out starry-eyed and excited to fill programs, sell out workshops, you just KNOW what you're offering is going to be incredible and everyone will want in. Until they don't. Or at least, not at the pace you're expecting. It can be discouraging when you post and post, and seem to shout it out to the world that you have the perfect offer, and only hear crickets. You're terrified of burning out your list and audience and you have no idea what to venture into next to bring in more leads. This is exactly where today's podcast guest finds herself as she fills her new 12-month membership program, the Warrior Wellness Tribe. Brittia Kubeczka poses the question, what do I do if I've already tapped into my warm market of people who know me. What happens next? As you'll hear on the episode, I love this question because by listening to the questions I was asking her, you'll start to see that just when you think you've exhausted your warm market... you're probably ONLY getting started in it. There are four types of buyers you need to be aware of, and market to, whenever you sell ANYTHING. 1. Impulse buyers You already know these. They are the people who jump in at the beginning of when you launch an offer because they love a good deal and they can't help themselves. 2. FAQ buyers These buyers have an intense need to know EVERYTHING there is about your offer before they can make a decision. 3. Heart-centered story buyers These buyers are your emotional feely-type of buyers. They love to buy because they are motivated by the stories of the offer. The testimonials, the case studies, the impact of things is what drives them to click SIGN ME UP! 4. Deadline buyers And, we should all be familiar with these buyers. They are the ones who slide in at the last second before you close down your offer... before the workshop is full; before the bonuses run out. They are fence sitters and a countdown and scarcity are what drive them to finally take the plunge. Knowing you have four layers of buyers to market to provides you with a ton more ways to market without feeling like you're over-doing it. Beyond knowing the types of buyers you're marketing to, what else can you do to spice it up and try new things? Which New Social Channel Should She Expand to? Brittia is considering experimenting with IGTV or YouTube, since she already makes a lot of videos. When branching out onto new channels, make decisions based on which one feels easier and the most fun. It sounds like a weird filter, but if you're not enjoying it, you won't do it consistently; and the thing about content creation is, if you don't do it consistently, it's almost not worth doing! The second thing you need to know about being in #alltheplaces, is that if you try to do everything at once, you won't know which channel is making the biggest impact on your numbers (leads, conversions & revenue) if you're spread out so much. So pick ONE platform you love AND that your peeps are on, THEN once that is consistent and bringing in more leads and money BEFORE you move on to the next one. The final piece we tackled on the call, is if I haven't exhausted my warm market, why aren't they buying? Brittia and I dove into what objections she's running into, and what mindset issues her ideal tribe member may we dealing with BEFORE they can even consider joining her Wellness Tribe. It's a case (which all of us have) of selling them what they want but giving them what they need. Her ideal person thinks their problem is either not exercising OR nutrition OR both. They most certainly don't think it's a mindset issue [EVEN IF THAT'S THE REAL PROBLEM]. So if she comes at the angle of it's a mindset issue, and they don't think that's the issue, they're going to automatically rule themselves out as a candidate to join. By tackling the elephant in the room, and broaching the topic of what they really, really think they need help with and showing how the Wellness Tribe will solve that AND make sure that they never fight it again... that's when she'll fill up her program, no matter what price point is. • #008: The Flip Side of Marketing and How Apple Does This One Thing to Take Over the Market
Most people are familiar with marketing to attract new clients. But what about the other side of marketing: to keep current clients? Today we're looking at how Apple remains an industry giant by focusing on how they use marketing to keep customers. I had to go to the Apple Store nearly an hour away this week to diagnose a problem on my Mac, and the experience left me with an ah-ha of how you, yes, you, can do the same thing in your business to get referral after referral, and loyal clients for life with a few tweaks to your business. Whether you love or hate Apple, they do so many things well for marketing and growing their business that you should emulate in your own business as well, for a fancy term I call Customer Retention Marketing (but is SO needs a sexier name!) What does Apple do well? Branding. Customer Experience. And.... something most of us don't even consider an asset, the back-end customer experience. This is how it shows up for Apple. Their branding. They have a distinct crisp look to all of their marketing. With the vast amount of white space and the color white in their advertisements. The font. The customer experience. If you’ve ever been into an Apple store, it’s a sight to behold. It almost feels like you’re walking into those designer stores where there’s security on the outside and a line waiting to go in and once you get in there, everything is lined up just so, with perfect packaging and spacing and the workers are uber helpful. It’s unlike any tech support experience I’ve ever had. The back-end customer experience. What they’ve designed behind the scenes s that when you arrive at their store, your experience is seamless. This is the scheduling, the way their support team addresses clients, the uniform, the support process and how they explain every step as they’re doing it and get permission along the way. The way they hand off to their tech support team if they can’t solve it on the spot: writing down things to the support team like, “ I set the expectation that” — so that when their support team called me to overnight a package so I can somehow part with my laptop for five days that he was meeting every expectation the in-store Apple member had set. So what does this mean for their bottom line? It creates loyal, obsessed fans who wait for days outside the store for the next version of a phone, or iPad or Mac they really don’t need to upgrade. Fans who talk about their love of Apple, who refuse to use anything else, and who will save, splurge or automatically purchase anytime something new comes out. Don’t we all want customers like this for our business?  Obviously, Yes!  So here's how to implement it in your own business, whether you're a solopreneur or manage a team, whether you have an online or brick and mortar business. These techniques can be applied across the board. 1. Design the experience first. What do you WANT your clients to feel AFTER they’ve worked with you, purchased a product from  you, met with you, etc.? 2. Write out word for word a script for what you'd want a happy client to tell someone else ABOUT your business. We know the best marketing is referral marketing because our clients do all the hard work for us and bring willing to buy leads straight to us. The way to get referral marketing is not to just ask (although that’s a great step too) but to orchestrate it. You may be thinking, that sounds weird, I’m not doing that but hear me out. If you know exactly what you want someone to say to a friend who might also be interested in purchasing from you, by knowing what they’ll say, you’ll have a clear goal and roadmap of what you need to do on the backend and in the experience to make it a reality. People don’t just magically say nice things about you. They say them because your experience with them compelled them to tell others because it stood out. And if you don’t make yourself stand out, well they have nothing to say, now do they? 3. Know how your competitors and those in similar spaces are treating their clients and do it better. Doing what everyone else is doing is NOT going to cut it. Today, we expect surprises in customer service thanks to Amazon, Zappos and Disney. What we don’t expect is the consistent surprises and level of service that indicates we noticed our customers. 4. Make your interactions with clients and potential clients as smooth as possible. This means auditing your process and looking for snags. Let’s go back to the Apple store I visited on Tuesday. >>> When I walked in, not only was I wowed by the giant glass doors, clean tables, and perfect product placement, but I was greeted by someone with an iPad to check me in, direct me where to go and tell me what was going to happen next. While waiting, I could see they had thought of everything for others users who were there just to purchase. We’ve all bought a phone before, and for some reason, it takes the most ridiculous amount of time to make that purchase. If you do it at an Apple store, they not only have gadgets for YOU to play with while you wait but children’s tables with iAds and children’ games, tiny bean bag chairs and space for kids to be entertained while you wait. They also came and greeted me, directed me to a specific seating for tech customers, and had everything ready to diagnose my computer’s problem when I sat down. No asking me questions I already filled out when I requested the appointment. He also gave me options and switched those options when I told him my hesitations about having to hand over my Mac that I use all day every day for 5 days and having to drive another four hours to drop off and pick up at the Apple store. So he overnighted a box to me that I could carefully ship my Mac to the tech office to get it fixed at a time convenient for me to give up 5 days without having to drive to immediately hand it over without warning. For them to do this, they had to set the scene in the Apple store. They had to have a customer concierge trained to check people in and direct them. They had to have a system in place for the Apple Support team to review appointments before walking each person back so they were ready to begin right away and they had to enable their Support team to make decisions on the fly that suits the customer. That all happened before I arrived. Look at your own processes in your business for how people connect with you, optin, fill out a form, call you, walk into your store, etc. and view it through their perspective. What can you improve? These things, though simplistic,  are what makes and breaks the customer retention in your business. Maya Angelou said: People will forget what you said. they will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. Design an experience that makes your clients FEEL like they matter to you, and see how it changes your business. If this is something that you'd love help mapping out >> or you just want a clear path of what to tweak in your business so you can hit big revenue goals, let's talk strategy. My clients who do a marketing strategy session love the clarity that comes out of talking through their business with someone with outside ideas, the brainstorming sessions of coming up with new and exciting things to breathe life into your marketing, and of course, the action plan I create just for you based on our 90-minute call that outlines step by step everything you can do to crush your revenue goals. We will audit what’s working and what can be improved, set some big revenue goals to go after in the next 90 days, and then map out step by step how to get there, from tweaking your website, to the copy you post online, to how you find and attract those perfect clients to how do you walk them through your product funnel (or set one up if you don’t have a natural way for people to keep saying yes to your offers) to the metrics you should be tracking so you know if what you’re doing is working. If this sounds like something your business needs to take it to the next level and make real money, let’s book a strategy session and do it together by going to malloryschlabach.com/schedule-strategy

  • #007: Stop Posting in Facebook Groups as a Marketing Strategy
Facebook groups are STILL all the rage and for good reason. They seem to fill a void we've created for ourselves in our technology-driven world. They make us feel seen and heard and like we are a part of something important. BUT Facebook groups are also a time suck, can be negative and if everyone and their mother are trying to get noticed, no one gets noticed. See where I'm going here? In today's episode, I tell you WHY you should stop posting in Facebook groups to get clients and what to do instead, how Harry Potter has ANYTHING to do with this and the pep talk you need to give yourself every day to do great marketing. Spoiler: It's to make REAL relationships with people... Filter to use when connecting online:  Is this someone I'd want to drink wine with while the kids destroy everything in the house? Is this someone I'd hang out with in real life? So if you're doing Facebook groups all wrong (and that's why you aren't finding your people), listen to find out what to do to market yourself instead and how it gets so much easier when you do it this way.
