Sounds Southern

Marsh Meadow at Enid Lake

Listen Later

Recorded on September 13, 2024, at the backwaters of Enid Lake on Hubbard Creek, this is the sound of a marsh meadow, rejuvenated by nearly 4" of rain dropped by Hurricane Francine the day before. You'll hear buzzing bees visit the late blooming plants along with birdsong, crickets, katydids and croaking frogs. Highlights include a small flock of Indigo Buntings repeating their chip call from the grasses beneath a towering bald cypress tree. Sounds Southern Extended listeners will also hear the distinct calls of Red-bellied, Pileated and Downy Woodpeckers, the gravelly kroow of a Great Egret foraging in the shallows, the high-pitched piping of Killdeer feeding along the lakeshore flats and an explosion of breeding chorus from the Southern Leopard frog at the 17 minute mark.
