A Public Affair

Martín Espada: Living at WORT and Reflecting Through Poetry

Listen Later

In his first show back after an extended hiatus, Allen Ruff is joined by an A Public Affair favorite, Martín Espada. Martín reads from his piece published in October’s Madison Magazine titled “Better Than Stealing A Necklace of Bullets.” The piece reflects on his early adulthood in Madison and his involvement with WORT.
Martín tells Allen, “being 66 years old puts me in a very reflective state of mind. I am combing my past, I am looking for those places, those turning points in my life that made me who I was and am.” Madison is one of those places.

Martín Espada has published more than twenty books as a poet, editor, essayist and translator. His new book of poems from Norton is called Floaters, winner of the 2021 National Book Award. Other books of poems include Vivas to Those Who Have Failed (2016), The Trouble Ball (2011), The Republic of Poetry (2006) and Alabanza (2003).
