NOTICE: Stick around to the end - Joey has some fishing kayaks about to come in and they will sell quick!
Welcome to the Maryland Fishing Line Episode 013
Today is Tuesday August 18, 2020
This is the podcast where we talk about fishing throughout the great state of Maryland.
The Maryland fishing line is a production of The Angler Magazine, Chesapeake Edition.
The Chesapeake Angler can be found throughout southern Maryland, Anne Arundel County, and the Eastern Shore. If you would like to see it in your area and it’s not there let us know!
Busy week, I know Joey you’ve been fishing, I’ve been fishing and ‘Rona is still a thing
Let’s take a look at what’s going on around the state.
Remember that all Maryland areas of the bay and tidal rivers will be closed to striped bass fishing from Aug. 16 through Aug. 31 and in the mainstem of the Potomac River until Aug 21.
Surface temps in the Bay are back up to normal after the tropical storm rolled through and cooled them off
But we are seeing some cooler mornings which is the beginning of the fall change
Spot, White Perch and Spanish mackerel are currently leading the charge.
Striped Bass
As stated earlier, Striped bass fishing is shut down until the end of August - leave ‘em be.
You will probably encounter some as a by-catch but handle them quick - maybe even consider not taking them out of the water
Bluefish
Hearing some reports of larger bluefish in the mix running alongside spanish mackerel
And there are still lots of smaller bluefish schooling on the surface - which by the way is a great way to find those bigger red drum as they will typically be underneath all the chaos
You might start to think about trolling up some of those bluefish
Stock up on those soft plastics - bluefish love to eat the tails
Cobia
Cobia fishing is OK at the Middle Grounds, the Target Ship, the Mud Leads
Chum, troll or sight cast - whichever you prefer - they all work.
Redfish and Puppy Drum
Look for larger red drum under those schools of breaking bluefish and spanish mackerel
They are down there cleaning up the mess
Go after them with large plastics or spoons
These fish are well outside the upper limit of the slot but are great catch and release fun
Speckled Trout
Speckled trout continue to be a mainstay for shallow water fisherman throwing soft plastics.
Remember grass beds hold the key for specks
Spanish Mackerel
The spanish mack bite continues to be hot
If you like shallow water fishing the Bay get on these guys in the morning
4 to 5 inch plastics with a light jighead
Tons of them breaking water at the mouth of the Patuxent
White Perch and Spot
White perch and spot are everywhere right now
For the spot - double hook bottom rigs with bloodworms
That works for perch too but also add in some small spinner baits on moving tides
Croaker
There are some small croaker in the mix
Get them back in the water quick! These are the croaker we will be dreaming of hopefully coming back in 2021 or 2022
Largemouth
Morning and evening bite is best on topwater baits like a whopper plopper or a buzzbait
They move to deeper water or tight to structure in the day - slow fishing plastics or jigs on laydowns when the sun is high is your best bet
Snakehead
Look for snakehead in shallow water areas early and late in the day
Some are currently sitting on fry balls - which are fun to watch for a hot minute but the parents are not going to be eager to take a lure
Catfish
Cats are abundant just about all over now as well.
All of these can be caught on fresh cut baits, chicken livers, clam snouts, and a variety of other stinky baits.
A great slow down fishing alternative to the striped bass right now during the closure
Crabs
Biggest crabs are being caught in 12 to 15 feet of water on oyster bars
Shallower areas are going to have an abundance of smaller crabs
The middle and lower bay are producing right now
