In this solo episode, Alex Charfen breaks down the first step into Masculine Containment: learning to train the trigger.
If you recognize the pattern of trigger, escalation, rupture, withdrawal, and repair in your relationship, this episode gives you a practical place to begin.
Alex explains how triggers show up in the body before they become yelling, defensiveness, withdrawal, shutdown, or other reactive behavior. He shares why men often either explode by bringing too much energy into the moment or implode by pulling their energy away, and how both responses can create a sense of threat for the people around them.
Through stories from his marriage, parenting, financial history, and road rage, Alex shows how present-day situations can activate old nervous-system conditioning that has very little to do with what is actually happening in the moment.
The practice is simple: notice the trigger, breathe, feel your body, slow the moment down, and create space before you react.
Alex also explains why some of the best training happens when you are alone. Everyday frustrations like traffic, unexpected mail, or something going wrong can become opportunities to build the same capacity you will eventually need in the moments that matter most with your wife, your children, and the people around you.
Over time, that training can change more than your relationships. Alex shares how becoming more grounded and embodied increased his capacity, improved his decision-making, reduced compulsive behavior, strengthened his intuition, and helped him become more creative and present in his work.
Masculine Containment is not about never getting triggered again.
It is about increasing the space between what you feel and what you do next.
If you are wondering where to begin, begin here.
Train the trigger.
