Grange Development is reaching for the sky with plans for the world’s tallest timber hybrid building in Perth. If the $350 million project is approved, the 183-metre high building will soar three metres higher than Atlassian’s headquarters in Sydney, which was billed as the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower when it was first unveiled in 2020. Danish architecture practice Schmidt Hammer Lassen has won an international competition to build a new residential building in the Swiss city of Winterthur which, when completed, will be the “world’s tallest residential building with a load-bearing structure in wood”. FPInnovations, a private non-profit specializing in creating solutions that support the global competitiveness of the Canadian forest sector, today launched the 2022 Edition of its Technical Guide for the Design and Construction of Tall Wood Buildings in Canada.

  • Mass Timber Construction Podcast Special Guest - Eli Gould - QWEB Mass Timber Tech Pluggins

In this special guest episode, Eli Gould joins me as the US Representative of QWEB under the Wood Structure Group based in the USA. QWEB is a nonprofit 200 member association of Quebec wood producers and manufacturers. My almost-full-time service for them is a great extension of my green building experience that allows me to help larger projects using wood, and connect great communities of manufacturers with projects in the US, Caribbean, and Latin America. In 2020, the nonprofit role also evolved into leading the teams building some ambitious (and free) digital tools for the wood structure industry in BIM (the Offsite Wood plug-in for Revit) and early phase embodied carbon calculations (The CarbonFixer App).

  • Mass Timber Market Updates - April 2022 - Week Fourteen

In this week's episode, the Province of B.C. is kicking in $250,000 for the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce's new digs – a multi-purpose commercial/tourism hub to be called The Confluence. NDP cabinet ministers today announced $1.2 million in funding for four new mass timber projects, including a new 783-unit student housing building for the University of Victoria. Commissioned, planned and constructed in barely 18 months, this new building in Berlin bucks the trend for German government projects being delayed and over-budget.  As the Government works to ‘build back greener’, the Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) in partnership with Waugh Thistleton Architects have hosted the UK Construction Minister Lee Rowley, on a site visit to the Black and White building.  Winner of both the Gold Award and the Education and Public Sector category of the Wood Awards 2021, Magdalene College Library in Cambridge is a striking example of sympathetic design, beautiful materials and careful craftmanship. The recently revealed design concept for the expansion of Santiago International Airport in the Dominican Republic includes a transformation of the current building into a mixed-use space that features an office park, business center, and hotel.

In this weeks episode, soon Robert Schmitz will be on the podcast, talking about the 20-storey, 75-metre-high Sara Cultural Centre - named after a popular Swedish author - opened its doors last September.  Designed by Greg Latimer, principal of studioCANOO, the six-storey office building has been styled to fit in with the well-worn industrial buildings in the Leaside Business Park in east-central Toronto. A new tool for city planners helps them design a portfolio of actions that encompasses mass timber has been released by Princeton.  The Port of Portland has direct experience using mass timber to construct the new airport terminal.  Completed this year, HAUT is part of the country’s commitment to becoming climate-neutral by 2050, in which the use of timber as a building material has been identified as one of the most effective ways to accelerate decarbonization.

  • Mass Timber Construction Podcast Special Guests - Christina Wijeratne - Funding Mass Timber in Australia

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation is seeking to transform Australia's approach to large-scale building construction, with a new $300 million program to encourage mass timber construction across the property sector.  Why timber buildings?  Timber medium and high-rise buildings are growing in popularity across the world, offering a lower carbon footprint, fast build time and physiological benefits for the end user.  Innovations in engineered wood products have created new opportunities for mass timber construction in larger projects, with immediate and long-term environmental benefits. Eligible projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program will be looking at projects that use low carbon engineered wood products in large-scale construction, have secured appropriate materials source, accreditation and embodied carbon outcomes, are commercially sound, and comply with the Clean Energy Finance Corporation investment policies, guidelines and risk approach. In this special guest episode, I speak with Christina Wijerante who is a Senior Investment Associate at the Clean Energy Finance Corporation as we talk about the scheme and how you can submit your project for review. Please enjoy the conversation with Christina.

If you are in Australia and wish to contact Christina, her email is [email protected] or you can contact Ryan Rathborne at [email protected]
